Class : Year 5 Appar
No. Of pupils : 36
Subject : Science
Theme : Investigating Material
Learning area : 2. Acid and Alkali
Leaning objective : 2.1 Understanding the properties of acidic, alkaline and neutral
substances.
Learning outcome : At end of this lesson, Students will be able to:
1) Identify acidic, alkaline and neutral substances using litmus
paper.
2) Identify the taste of acidic , alkaline and neutral substances.
3) Conclude the properties of acidic, alkaline and neutral
substances
Pre- requestion Knowledge:
Students have learnt about the tastes of food substances and colour. Some food
substances such as vinegar solution, baking powder, detergent solution, lime water,
toothpaste, cooking oil and tap water are quite familiar to students.
Scientific skills and Thinking skills :
1) Predict the substances that acidic, alkaline or neutral.
2) Classify the substances according their property whether they are acidic,
alkaline or neutral.
3) making their own concept about the property of substances.
Manipulative skill : Use and handle the materials for investigation process.
Scientific attitudes and values : Be honest in gathering data and Having critical and
analytical thinking.
Teaching and learning resources: Litmus papers, beaker, detergent solution, vinegar
solution, tap water, mango, medicine, tea, lotion,
’asam keping ‘, detergent powder, lime water, rice,
toothpaste, orange juice.
Assessments : Students verbal interaction, student problem solving
and worksheet.

substances
- Students predict
the property of
materials in front
of them and they
need to
investigate the
property of
materials that he
had provided
using litmus paper
to determine
whether they are
acidic, alkaline or

dry substances
that has property
acid and alkali.
When in dry they
not change the
colour of litmus
paper, but when
put a little bit of
water they can
change the colour
of litmus paper.
Application

Effect of acid,
alkaline and
neutral
- Students doing
investigation on
the substances
that they use in
daily life such as
tamarind, canned
drink, yogurt, lime
juice and tomato
sauce.
- Students will
discuss their
observation and
conclude the
properties of
acidic, alkaline
and neutral
substances in
terms of colour
change of litmus
paper and taste.
