Todorov• An equilibrium (everything is normal at the beginning).• A disruption (something strange happens, someone new arrives, something changes).• A recognition of the disruption (people, or the hero realises that they have to do something).• An attempt to repair (the hero tries to get things back to normal, tries to overcome the threat).• A resolution (a new equilibrium is established).Enigma CodesThese are hooks or mysteries that keep the audience to keep watching the film. Trailer do this so that they can hook the audience to a film which is coming out. They are at the start of the film and then resolved at the end of the film.StructureLinear Structure- Simple, straightforward plotNon-Linear Structure- Events told in reverse order, or with lots of flash backs and flash-forwards, or the same events retold from different POV’SBinary OppositionsThe storyline of a plot is often organised around opposite pairs (binary oppositions). The conflict between these opposites drives the narrative forward.Typical binary oppositions are:Hero vs VillainGood vs Evil Mise-en-sceneA way of analysing a specific shot in a film or a film poster/websiteThe things that you would include in a Mise-en-scene analysis is:• The setting • Props• Costumes• The type of shot (close-up, long shot…)• Camera angle (high angle, eye-level…)• Lighting (high-key, low-key…)• Colour values (of setting, costumes, colour filters…)• How the characters are placed within the frame

Location- They are not in a normal world as there is numbers falling from the sky.Props-The character in the front is holding a machine gun which could indicate that there would be violence in this film, all of the other characters are holding pistols.Costumes-The main character is in black he is in a trench coat which contradicts the gun in his hand, as trench coats are not the most suitable clothes for fighting people. The type shot- It is a long shot of all of the characters so that you can see what they are wearing and holdingCamera Angle- It is a eye level shot where you can see most of each characters bodies. The lighting is relatively high key on the characters faces, and a bit lower key the further you go down the poster. One of the main colours is black as that is the colour of the trench coat that the main character is wearing, the other would be purple as that is the colour of the clothes that the other people are wearing. The most important character is in the front taking up most of the frame while the less important characters are behind.

Sound is used for mood and atmosphere and to make tension, they add different kinds of effects to the movie or Tv show, without sound the movies would not be enjoyable to watch. The genre which needs sound the most is horror, this Is because the horror genre scares that audience with sound as well as visual, the sound creates tension then it creates fear.

Sound can be a mixture of dialogue, music/soundtrack

Genre- This is a style of a movie or Tv show etc, each different film would have different aspects which adheres to that genres. For example the film ‘saw’ is a horror film because of the violence and jump scaresSub-genre- This is a smaller group within a genre, for example science fiction could have space/time travel in them.Hybrid genre- These are a mixture of two main genres. For example sci-fi and horror could be the film “Alien”Conventions- These are thing which films stick to for that genre, for example: Action films would have fight scenes and explosionsLinear narrative- These are simple straight forward plots presented as Cause and effect like the film “attack the block”Non-linear narratvie- Events told in reverse, or with many flash backs and flash forwards, like the filme “Edge of tomorrow”Todorov’s 5 stages-• An equilibrium (everything is normal at the beginning).• A disruption (something strange happens, someone new arrives, something changes).• A recognition of the disruption (people, or the hero realises that they have to do something).• An attempt to repair (the hero tries to get things back to normal, tries to overcome the threat).• A resolution (a new equilibrium is established).Enigma codes- Hooks and mysteries that keep the audience watching the film, like “what will happen next?”Binary oppositions- The storyline of a film is often organised around opposite pairs (also known as ‘binary oppositions for example Hero vs. villain Good vs. evil

A convention of science fiction films is for it to be based on real or potentiall scientific knowledge.Other common generic conventions of sci-fi is, space / time travel, alien contact / invasion, nuclear / environmental threat or disaster, mutated or genetically engineered creatures / people, robots / technology taking over.Sci-fi hybrids with horror to make the alien films, and also comedy like Galaxy quest and action for films like Elysium and fantasy like Avatar.

Media LanguageKey Concepts• Audience• Institutions• Language• RepresentationScience fiction is notoriously difficult to define. This genre is based on fantastical technology and is more based on science than fantasy. The plot normally includes a human element, explaining what effect new tech has on the world.Typically science fiction films/Tv shows are set in the future, or in space or on another planet.

ELYSIUM

This film includes robots with their own brain and which aren’t controlled, these adheres to the conventions of science fiction as this technology has not fully been invented yet.

Another conventions that this film adheres to is space ships and space travel as this film includes space ships where people live on, this exists in real life but not to that proportion, so this adds to how this film is science fiction.

Another science fiction feature in this film, is advanced technology which is used to heal the people, this is only accessible to the people who can afford it, that technology doesn’t exist, that is why it is science fiction.

There is more advanced technology when they adapt the human body to make it better with an exoskeleton, which increases the characters abilities.
