    6 SCI Annual Report

  • As an Institute, SCIs 2012 journey took us in diverse and creative directions. Our Law & Advocacy team published landmark Guidelines for the medical and mental healthcare of seafarers after extreme conditions of captivity by pirates. These Guidelines embody SCIs century-long advocacy for seafarer welfare and dignity.

We underpin our advocacy work with our daily ship visits in Port Newark and Oakland, serving one seafarer at a time to hear their unique stories andneeds.

This same synergy comes when our Ministry on the Rivers and Gulf chaplains work with Center for Maritime Education instructors to support and train

Americas inland merchant mariners. On our best days, SCI strengthens the navigational and leadership skills of towboat pilots; on our most challenging days, we respond to fatalities and injuries that remain a reality of river work.

SCI trustees worked faithfully to strengthen our governance and temporal life, implementing an exciting new Strategic Plan, while we launched a robust new website and relocated our Headquarters to 74 Trinity Placecontinuing our tradition of service near the New York Harbor waters of LowerManhattan.

Speaking of the Harbor, SCI will long remember the challenges that impacted our maritime community after

Octobers Superstorm Sandy. More than the surge that damaged our Port Newark facility, however, I will never forget the perseverance of port workers to reopen the Port within a week. Although without electricity and still a little damp, we served the first ships arriving in port six days after the storm.

In this Annual Report, find details of these and other great stories from the journey both you and I have ventured together as supporters of the maritime workforce in 2012. Thanks for all you do to make these storiesremarkable talesof camaraderie and servicepossible.

On Monday, November 5, SCI-Port Newark resumed operations after a weeks closure due to Hurricane Sandy. With another storm on its way, SCI staff rushed to move Christmas at Sea gifts out of the flood-prone first floor and onto higher ground. They got help from crew members of the CSCL Vancouver, who gave up precious shore leave time to make sure others Christmas gifts stayed dry. (Dont worrythey received their own holiday packages, too!)

Emergency preparedness and response procedures were outstanding. I have taken various ship handling courses, but none as well balanced as this one. The instructors, facilities, and program materials were all first class.
