Wow! What a weekend of celebrations and how wonder-ful to see so many staff, (past & present), students (past & present), parents and friends of the College join us in celebrating the College’s 25th anniversary of the day school.

When reflecting on where we started, to where we are now, I don’t think any of us (who have been here from the beginning) could have imagined the progress and changes that have occurred.

The favourite philosophy of College founder, Rev Dr Fred McKay’s was: I Can Make It Happen... and he did. He would be proud of where we have come, but he would not allow us to rest on our laurels for too long. Fred would be planting the seed of the next new idea and helping others to nuture the idea to reality.

Having said that, congratulations to everyone who was involved in the planning and implementation of our weekend of celebrations. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to ensure things go smoothly and I’m very grateful to have a wonderful team of people who put so much effort and time into events such as this. Our celebrations last weekend were a wonderful way to end a long and very busy term and as we set our course and sail into the next 25 years may you have a restful holiday and we look forward to you seeing you in Term 2.

Girls’ Boarding NewsLetter Boxes & Bush Dancing!

After a relaxing Friday evening watching movies, the weekend was largely taken up by the College’s 25th anniversary celebra-tions.

Most of the girls really enjoyed the bush dance and it was good to see them exercis-ing in such a fun way. It meant a late night for many of them followed by an early morning to attend the special service in the Swag Chapel. It was lovely to see the chapel fuller than normal and the singing sounded

great.

After that it was prep followed by free time and packing for the rest of the day.

We were also a little bit creative this week-end - making our letter box for the commu-nity garden. We have christened our garden Busy Bees and so of course that was the theme of our letter box. With the help of some yellow and black paint and some Mad Harry’s wings, Chelsea managed to make an impressive looking entry for the Easter Competition. Harvesting our first lettuce and Asian greens was delayed by a heavy down pour on Sunday afternoon - but they will undoubtedly look even healthier when we do harvest them later in the week.

I’m sure if the boarders feel like me, the end of this week can’t come soon enough, but I’ll be looking forward to seeing them all again on Sunday 27 April.

Colin Puruntatameri selected for Indigenous

Youth Parliament

Year 8 Camp Monday 28 - Wed 30 April

Congratulations to Colin Puruntatameri (pictured above) who has been selected for the National Indigenous Youth Parliament.

Colin heads off for training in Darwin on 12 April and will then head to Canberra for a week at the end of May/beginning of June.

The National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP) is an exciting program run by the Aus-tralian Electoral Commission (AEC) in col-laboration with the YMCA and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House.

It is an opportunity for 50 young Indig-enous Australians to learn about Australia’s democracy and to have a say in Australia’s future. A week-long leadership program for young Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people aged 16 to 25 who are interested in learning about Australia’s democracy.

NIYP will bring to Canberra future Indig-enous leaders from around Australia to talk about issues affecting their communities. The participants will learn how laws are made and have the opportunity to speak to and learn from the lawmakers.

Please note that the Year 8 ENG5 Camp postponed this week due to the weather has been rescheduled for Week 1 of Term 2. Students will leave on Monday 28 April (first day back after the holidays) and will return on Wednesday 30 April.

The Northern Territory Medicare Local are conducting our NT Rural High School Visits for 2014. This program will be coming to St Philip’s on Monday 12th May for two sessions. The first session will be for students in Years 10 – 12 and the second session will be for Year 7 students only. There is a limit to 40 students per session. Please speak with your child and register his/her interest by email with the Career Adviser, Leslie Tilbrook at [email protected]

The general objectives of RHSVs are:

• To foster students’ education and future goals, potentially resulting in a handful of health professionals. • To expose school students to the multitude of health careers available to them. • To provide opportunities for students to be able to reflect on their personal values, interests and goals and how these might fit with a career in health. • To provide opportunities for students to interact and learn from the experiences of Rural Health Club presenters. • To give positive feedback to students on their ability to overcome barriers to pursuing a health career. • To emphasise the multidisciplinary aspect of health careers. • To encourage school students to stay at school and attain the best possible education. • To enable school students to interact with health students in a non-intimidating, fun but educational environment. • To promote healthy lifestyles and healthy choices to school students.

It is the sort of fun and creative interaction that occurs in RHSVs that will lead to a greater trust of health workers in the community; an increased likelihood of accessing health care; a greater chance of remaining at school; an improved understanding of cultural differ-ences; and consequently and most importantly, improved health outcomes.

RHSVs are more focussed on “hands on” experiences and University students are encouraged to deliver a workshop that is enriched with “tools from their trade” such as Sphygmomanometers, Stethoscopes, plastering, anatomical manikins so secondary students can get an impression of what it may be like to be involved in studying and working in such a field. Each student will be presented with a show bag and information on courses etc. for University, along with health careers information.

Do you have a Russian Samovar hiding in your cupboard?

Dear St Philip’s parents and staff,

The Year 11 and 12 Drama classes have been working in conjunction with the Performing Arts staff in order to prepare for this year’s senior play. Part of this prepara-tion is props design and management, and due to the limitations of availability and/or costs the item below would be easier if bor-rowed rather than bought.

Therefore we’d like to know if someone had a Russian Samovar that we could borrow. Please be assured that the Samovar will be taken care of by the production crew and Performing Arts staff and returned after the production, the 1st of June. The Samovar will be needed by Week 2, Term 2, 6th May. If anyone owns the above item and would consent to its use in this production or for further information, questions or queries please contact our Performing Arts Assistant and Production Manager, Amanda Mesler on: 0431913981 or email: [email protected]

ANZAC Day March 25th April

Each year St Philip’s College marches in the town parade which begins at 9:30am from the council lawns and proceeds to the top of ANZAC Hill before the com-mencement of the ANZAC Day service.

However, as ANZAC Day (25th April) this year falls in the last week of the school holidays, we’re not sure who will be available to march.

Any student who wishes to participate please meet at the council lawns at 8.45am on Saturday, 25th April dressed in your College Winter uniform.

If your child wishes to wear a family member’s service medals that is fine.

For more information please contact Sarah Pollitt: [email protected]

Peter followed at a distance.Luke 22:54

Peter was sharp. He kept his distance from Jesus.“I’ll stay close enough to see him,” Peter reasoned.“But not too close, or I may get caught.”

Good thinking, Peter.Don’t get too involved - it might hurt.Don’t be too loyal - you might get branded.Don’t show too much concern - they’ll crucify you, too.

We need more men like you, Peter.Men who keep religion in its place.Men who don’t stir the water.Men who reek with mediocrity.

That’s the kind of man God needs, yes sir.

One who knows how to keep his distance:“Now, I’ll pay my dues and I’ll come once a week, but...well...you can get carried away, you know.”

Yes, you can get carried away... up a hill to a cross - and killed.

Peter learned a lesson that day - a hard lesson. It is better to have neverfollowed Jesus than to havefollowed him and denied him.

Mark these words:

Follow at a distance and you’ll deny the Master. Period. You won’t die for a man you can’t touch. Period. But stay near to him, in his shadow...You’ll die with him, gladly.
