The National Dairy Shrine’s Student Recognition Award honors students for excellence in leadership skills, in- volvement in activities, academic achievement and interest in the dairy industry. The award recognizes graduating college seniors as they begin their ca- reers or pursue graduate level educa- tion, and comes with a cash award. A May 2009 MSU animal science grad- uate, Messing was one of 7 students who were presented with a $500 check. To compete for the award, she had to complete an application, answer several essay questions and submit 2 letters of recommendation. She said she was both surprised and ecstatic when she opened the congratulations letter from the National Dairy Shrine. “It’s indeed an honor to be recog- nized by the National Dairy Shrine, and I feel fortunate to be considered among some of the most elite individ- uals from the U.S. dairy industry as one of the recipients of this award,” Messing commented. “Receiving this award helps me stand out among my peers and puts me out front of the worldwide dairy audience.” Founded in 1949, the National Dairy Shrine’s 17,000-plus members repre- sent every facet of the dairy industry. The organization unites dairy produc- ers, scientists, students, educators, marketers and others who share a de- sire to preserve the country’s dairy heritage and promote its future. The organization annually awards more than $35,000 in awards and scholar- ships and provides financial support to the World Dairy Expo and the Na- tional 4-H Dairy Conference. Messing, of Ubly, is currently em- ployed by Semex USA as its North- eastern Michigan District sales representative. Prior to earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in animal science, she graduated from the MSU Institute of Agricultural Technology with a 2-year degree in dairy manage- ment. Messing was actively involved in the MSU Dairy Club and partici- pated on both the Ag Tech and college dairy judging teams. She was also an active Michigan 4- H member, served on both the Michi- gan Junior Holstein Association and Jersey Junior Cattle Club boards of directors, and fulfilled the role of the 2007 senior Michigan Dairy Ambas- sador. During her college career, Messing, 22, the daughter of Greg and Shelly Messing, also spent 3 months in Tu- lare, Calif. (in the central valley, about an hour south of Fresno), in 2006, working on a 2,000-cow dairy opera- tion in conjunction with an internship. “I was basically the assistant herds- man,” Messing explained, noting the sheer size of the herd — spread over 3 different farms — enabled her to gain a great deal of experience in a relatively short amount of time. The operation raises both Jersey and Hol- stein cattle, and Messing’s duties in- cluded treating sick calves and caring for cows that had just calved. She was also offered the opportunity to start a program in which the farm raised more of its own calves, rather than contract that service out to an- other operation. As the dairy ambassador, Messing spent a great deal of time partnering with various groups to help promote the state’s dairy industry to a wide range of audiences. “I believe that as dairy farmers, we have a responsibility to tell its story. If consumers don’t believe that dairy products are healthy and safe to eat and drink, they won’t buy (them),” she said. Messing has been familiar with dairy operations since she was young, hav- ing grown up on the family farm and being expected to take care of her fair share of the chores. Today, although she landed a job with Semex USA, she’s still considering carrying on her family’s dairy farming tradition, which currently includes 180 cows. The Messings also farm about 650 acres, growing dry beans, corn, wheat and hay. “I still help out on my parents’ farm,” said Messing, who balances work at home with what she refers to as her “real job”. “My region (with Semex) is the upper Midwest, I guess you could say. The boys were on hand for the open house with their mother, Debby Mack of Ubly. (More photos, page 4) Michigan legislators finally passed a new budget Thursday — a week after the Oct. 1 deadline — and the outcome for area school officials awaiting news on how much funding they can count on this year wasn’t as bad as they expected. But the news wasn’t good, either. The House and Senate each voted in favor of cutting K-12 funding by $165 per student as part of a plan to trim an estimated $2.8 billion deficit, although the Legislature still must fi- nalize an overall state government spending plan for the next year, with Republicans and Democrats at odds over how much new revenue, via tax increases and other measures, can be included. School officials had been told they would lose $218 per pupil in funding this year, but are quick to say a loss of $165 is still going to hurt. For the Cass City, Kingston, Owen- Gage and Ubly school districts, the combined loss in state dollars adds up to nearly a half-million dollars. According to state figures, Cass City, with 1,265 students, will lose $208,751, while Kingston, with a K- 12 enrollment of 644 pupils, can count on $106,248 less this year. The Owen-Gage School District has a total enrollment of 216 kids and will lose $35,686, and Ubly, with an en- rollment of 812 students, faces the prospect of having $133,919 less to spend. Cass City School Supt. Ron Wilson was scheduled to meet with his school board’s finance committee Tuesday to begin looking at options, including trimming the district’s lean budget even more, or spending a portion of fund balance, or a combination of both. “At this point, I don’t even know” what we’re going to do. My prelimi- nary numbers are...we’re still looking at (making up) $300,000 to $350,000. That’s my conservative guess,” Wil- son said. The state budget solution came in the wake of a biannual student counts that revealed a continuing trend of declin- ing enrollment in several area schools, including Cass City, which reported a net loss of 48 students. Wilson said he anticipated that loss when drafting the district’s 2009-10 budget, now in effect for more than 3 months. Based on Cass City’s 2008- 09 state funding level of $7,316 per pupil, that loss translates into more than $350,000. And the projections for state funding next year indicate schools could lose another $600 or more per student. Area school officials, including Wil- son and Owen-Gage School Supt. Dana Compton, say their financial fu- ture isn’t likely to improve any time soon unless state legislators come up with a long-term solution - one that will begin to correct years of increas- ing costs and declining enrollment while state funding hasn’t even come close to keeping up. “There doesn’t seem to be any lead- ership in Lansing that’s willing to look at restructuring how schools are funded,” Wilson said, adding the prospects for better times aren’t good as long as school funding is tied to sales tax revenues, especially in light of Michigan’s nation-leading 15.2- percent unemployment rate. State Rep. Terry Brown (D-Pigeon) last week announced that the villages of Gagetown and Millington have been approved for nearly $950,000 in federal money for road, water and sewer improvement projects that will create jobs and stimulate economic development. “Investing in our infrastructure will help create jobs and give our local economy a much-needed boost,” Brown said. “Making improvements to our roads, sewers and overall infra- structure sends a message to busi- nesses that Tuscola County is a great place to set up shop. In order to turn the economy around, we’ve got to at- tract job providers to our community and get people back to work.” The village of Gagetown will receive $520,000 in funding, while contribut- ing $130,000 of its own money for street improvements. The village of Millington, meanwhile, was awarded $428,200 and will contribute nearly $50,000 to make water and sewer im- provements. snack, and chocolate pudding fordessert.

Nobody ever found one of Steve’slunches ripening under a boat seat.He ate every bit of them.

One day I was marveling at Steve’slunch and questioning how he got hiswife to pack it, when I recalled a storyby outdoor writer the late Gene Hill.Hill’s story describes his friend whoalways showed up with a beautifullunch and all of the garnishments.Hill’s hunting buddy wouldn’t think

of venturing into the field without aperfectly packed lunch and a littleglass of wine to go with it.

“That’s the only thing missing,” Itold Steve. “Your wife packs a nicelunch, but she forgot the wine. Iguess it’s pretty hard to carry a glassof wine when you’re chukar hunting.”

A couple of weeks later, my friendand I were climbing along the sameridge, hunting the same chukars, when we decided to stop for lunch.Steve stifled a grin as he unpacked hisfried chicken, pickles, potato chips, alittle cheese roll (with crackers), anda cupcake for dessert.

Then, he pulled out two wineglasses, and one of those little bottleslike they serve in expensive restau-rants. Next, he fished out hiscorkscrew and said, “I’m sorry wedon’t have a better selection of winestoday.

“I just wasn’t sure what would gowith your baloney sandwich.”

“Ah, here’s one,” I thought. “Thismight be lunch, or maybe a snack?”

Actually, I can’t tell what it is. It’sone of those meals I packed monthsago. I find them in my hunting coat, in the

glove box, and under the boat seat. Some are dry and chewy looking. The majority are green and hard toidentify.

Some of these meals are partiallyeaten. Others haven’t been touched:Apparently judged too bad to eat, buttoo good to throw away.

My son says the Army has somefood they call MREs, “Meals Readyto Eat.” He claims they are prettygood. The food in my coat pocket could be

called SIFs, “Stuff I Found.” It mighthave been good when I packed it, butit’s pretty bad when I find it weekslater. If I packed better lunches tobegin with, I probably wouldn’t findso many leftovers.

There’s an art to packing a lunch. One can’t just throw a baloney sand-wich in a bag and expect it to look ap-petizing at lunchtime. The best lunches I can remember be-

longed to my old friend, Steve.Steve’s lunch always featured a maincourse and at least four side dishes.

He would have fried chicken, hamand cheese on sourdough, pork ten-derloin wrapped in a dinner roll, gour-met potato chips (with dip), two kindsof pickles, smoked salmon for a

Halloween has always been a holiday filled with ex-

citement and mystery for people of all ages.

Maybe one of the biggest unknowns concerning the

upcoming celebration, however, is how it all begin?

According to our research, Halloween’s origins date

back to the ancient Celtic, who lived 2,000 years ago in

the area that is now Ireland. They rejoiced their new

year on November 1, which marked the end of summer

and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of

year associated with human death. The Celts believed

that on their new year’s eve, the boundaries between the

worlds of the living and dead became blurred. The Celts

also contend that on the night of October 31,when they

celebrated Samhain, the ghosts of the dead return to

earth.

To commemorate the event, the Celts wore costumes,

built huge sacred bonfires as they thought that the pres-

ence of the otherworld spirits made it easier for Celtic

priests to make predications about the future, providing

prophecies that were a source of comfort during the

long winter months.

In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold

Halloween into a holiday more about community and

neighborly get-togethers, than ghosts, pranks, and

witchcraft.

At the turn of the century, Halloween parties for both

children and adults became the most common way to

celebrate the day.

To help keep this year’s trick or treaters safe please

consider these common sense subjections:

It is not consider safe to let young children walk thestreets along, instead use Halloween to teach your chil-

dren everyday safety such as not getting into cars or

talking to strangers and watching both ways before

crossing streets.

Explain to older children the difference between tricksand vandalism. Tossing eggs at a car may seem like fun

but they

need to

know that

c o n s e -

quences. If

they are

caught van-

For adultsparties, keep

an eye on

tion. Take the keys away from anyone that may be driv-

ing and over the legal limits, having a sober driver to

get people home can avoid tragedy.

Use common sense forHalloween safety

I committed a cardinal publishing sin last week while writing my featurestory on Bob Morley’s book which chronicles 5 decades of Cass City’s boys’basketball program.Quick to point out my blunder were Rinerd Schember and Dick Wallace. They were friends of 1953 Red Hawk graduate Tim Burdon, who, among

many other accomplishments, scored 30 or more points 9 times during hissenior year en route to Class B all state honors.

The Chronicle (me) spelled Burdon as BurTON and asks that you parDONthe error with my apologies.

A few sayings come to mind, such as “good things come to those who wait”or “patience is a virtue” that could apply to Anton Peters’ fete last week atRolling Hills Golf Course. The 77-year-old Cass City resident recorded his first hole-in-one during play

in the fall 2-man league, acing the par 3 fifth hole with a well struck 7-iron.However, I’ve seen my elderly friend’s swing and perhaps a more fitting ex-

pression would be “even a blind squirrel finds a nut.”

How much water is used monthly by our village? Well (no pun intended) inAugust, 9,568,000 gallons were pumped from our wells, according to the De-partment of Public Works.

That equates to an average of about 309,000 gallons of water pumped daily, but is less than the 9,677,000 gallons pumped in August 2008.Remember those numbers the next time you leave the water running unnec-

essarily to shave or brush your teeth. Of course, this rule applies to men also.

There’s still time to order your apple pies from the Shabbona pie factory,a.k.a. the Shabbona United Methodist Church, by calling 989-872-3530.My family can attest that the pies are well worth the $8 price tag, especially

my 12-year-old son Parker, who consumed all but a tiny sliver of our first piesingle-handedly in one sitting.

Simple selfishness behindhealth insurance fearsTo the Editor:

It is amazing how the Rush Lim-baughciles and Glenn Beckers seemto go unchallenged in these parts. Itis as though many of us have simplygiven up on trying to correct theirmisstatements. Or, perhaps manywho know better have simply decidedto ignore them.

Take the downright distortion madeabout America’s uninsured, last seenin these pages Oct. 7, that of the ap-proximately 50 million who do nothave health insurance, most of themare “illegal aliens.”Balderdash! As a matter of fact, the U.S. Census

Bureau reported in 2007 that of thosein the U.S. who do not have health in-surance, only a third of them are ofHispanic origin and of these, about 14million, are considered to be “illegalaliens.” That leaves “only” 36 millionof the rest of us Americans withouthealth insurance at any given mo-ment.

But, what the Limbaughciles andBeckers totally ignore is the fact that,at any given point between 2007 and2008, 29 percent of Americans (86.7million of us) were uninsured. Fur-ther, without some drastic changesbeing made in the medical/insuranceindustry, the chances are that at least50 percent of us will be without healthinsurance sometime within the nextten years, and most of those will beunder the age of 60, many of themblue collar workers with children.Do we really want that?It is sad to say that those who foam

at the mouth when they hear the word“Socialist,” in spite of being person-ally helped by many Socialist inspiredprograms, like Social Security,Medicare, and the interstate highwaysystem, insist that these statistics weremade up by crazy left-wing liberal in-tellectuals! Nevertheless, it should bea obvious to us that those who actu-ally collect the data and try to makesense of it (I believe they are usuallycollege educated people with degrees)have simply been persuaded by whatthey see.

Ok, maybe some of them are fools!

On the other hand, maybe some ofthem actually do have some commonsense! Does going to college reallyturn a person into an educated idiot? Is everyone who never went to col-lege a magi?

A fairly conservative study done atThe Institute of Medicine of the Na-tional Academies (a hoard of closet-Democrats?) points out that lack ofhealth insurance causes around18,000 preventable deaths each yearin the U.S. But, another study donesome years ago at Harvard MedicalSchool (a well known bastion ofpinko commies?) concludes that asmany as 100,000 Americans die eachyear because they don’t get the carethey need, a number that is threetimes that of those who die of AIDS.

But, it doesn’t have to be this way!No one should have to be withoutmedical care when they need it!I find it amazing how so many of the

same people who so firmly insist thatAmerica is a nation founded on Godlyprinciples so blatantly ignore basicbiblical teachings concerning the poorand the sick.

A bit of common sense says, “Youcan’t have your cake and eat it too!”In other words, fellow believers: “Ifyou’re going to talk the talk, you’dbetter walk the walk.”

It was the prophet Ezekiel, after all,who condemned Israel’s leaders, say-ing, “You have not strengthened theweak or healed the sick or bound upthe injured” (Ezekiel 34:4). And itwas Jesus, himself, who said, “Departfrom me, you who are cursed, into theeternal fire prepared for the devil andhis angels. For...I was sick...and youdid not look after me” (Matthew25:41-43).

I mean, what is it about this bit ofcommon sense that we don’t under-stand?

What’s really going on around us isthis: Those of us who can afford topay twice as much as we should forhealth care will go on paying it stub-bornly because we’re really scared todo anything different that might helpthose who are poor, even if it could

You pour a drink, watch a commer-cial, brush your teeth, or tie yourshoes, all these activities take aminute of your time, 60 seconds ofyour life spent doing a small chore orotherwise.

For many, a minute is nothing at allbut one part that makes up a wholeday, a single moment that can bepassed by with little thought or mean-ing.Yet to the students at Cass City Mid-

dle School, a minute can be magical.Yes, this minuscule portion of the dayis actual cause for excitement, joy andanticipation. That is, when thisminute is spent raising as muchmoney as possible for a worthy char-ity.

For a number of years now CCMShas been promoting donations andcharitable giving by challenging stu-dents to give as much as they can to adesignated charity in a minute’s win-dow of time, known as the “magicminute”.

A few days beforehand, studentcouncil members plan out who themoney will go to and it is announcedthroughout the school that studentsshould remember their money, whether just a little, or a lot. On theday of the event, student council rep-resentatives pass around buckets ineach classroom for one minute andgive each student a chance to con-tribute. Then, that feeling comes, thefeeling that they, in some small, butspecial, way have made a differencein another person’s life.Ilana Blattner, a sixth grader, told of

this feeling, saying, “It makes me feel

good when I donate because I knowI’m helping families in need.”

And this warmth they experiencemakes them want to do more. Thiswillingness brought on by giving isevidenced by what happened this lastSeptember. In the first week ofschool students were encouraged toopen their hearts for a local familyand they did so happily. Whentragedy struck later in the week in theform of the death of Corey Sanders, students were again asked to give toanother deserving cause. The nextweek when the bucket was passed, not only did students give, they dou-bled the amount they gave the firstweek.

Mrs. Schinnerer and Mrs. Schrader, the two CCMS student council advi-sors commented “We’re so gratefulfor the generosity shown by the stu-dents when they gave so much inthose 2 weeks.”

This generosity of students extendsback to 2001, when Mrs. Volz (for-merly a middle school teacher whonow teaches at the high school) spear-headed the magic minute after seeingother schools doing the same thing toraise money after 9/11.

Mrs. Volz said, “It’s a neat thing forkids, they get really fired up abouthow much you could raise in aminute.”

So when you brush your teeth or tieyour shoes, think of how such a smallamount of time is being used to servethe community. All in all, the magicminute really is just a little way mid-dle school kids can learn about givingand actually give.

It’s 0900 hours on the base camp of Fort Red Hawk and the squadronsare taking their spots in the dense woodland called the battleground.

Camouflage, face paint, and bandanas were staples at this base. Thesoldiers came by the twenties, strategizing with their commanders for thebest attack method.

In the name of good, clean fun, the seniors of Cass City High Schoolwere recently at combat, involved in an intense game of laser tag. Thisfun day was 100 percent safe with adults refereeing, as well as joining in.

Serving as a reward day for Michigan Merit Exam scores the previousschool year, laser tag was taken to a whole new level in the woods behindthe high school. As the rest of CCHS had standardized testing to map outtheir future, the seniors were celebrating the future just steps away. The West was surely conquered.

ROOM AVAILABLEFOR A LADY RESIDENT!

While the weather did nothing to addto the enjoyment of Cass City HighSchool’s 62nd homecoming game, itwas Bay City All Saints’ Drew Janerwho spoiled the evening.

On a wet, cold, rainy night, theCougars’ junior quarterback ran wild, racking up over 300 rushing yardsand nearly single-handedly leadingthe visitors to a 42-35 victory inGreater Thumb West play. With theloss, the Red Hawks slipped to 2-3 inthe conference, 3-4 overall, with apair of home games remaining on theregular schedule.

Up next for the Red Hawks will beguest Vassar who will visit the recre-ational park field this Friday for thehosts’ final Greater Thumb West out-ing. The Vulcans will be heavily fa-vored as they sit in a 3-way tie, alongwith the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lak-ers and the Reese Rockets, for leaguehonors.

For awhile Friday, it appeared thatwhoever had the ball last would con-quer in Cass City’s homecoming bat-tle with the Cougars, as the 2 teamsfought to a 35-35 deadlock enteringthe intermission.

After the visitors got on the score-board early on a Kevin Swierez runfrom 30 yards out, the hosts were ableto draw even with the Cougars beforethe quarter’s end when Alex Varneycapped a 67-yard march with a 23-yard scamper. Cass City then tooktheir first lead early in the secondquarter when Derek Guigar’s fumblerecovery spotted the ball inside thered zone. Austin Osentoski made thevisitors pay moments later when hebusted over from the 3-yardline, giv-ing the Hawks their first advantage.

The hosts’ edge was short lived.Janer took the ensuing kick-off 75yards for his first TD and then addedscores on runs of 50 yards and 37yards, extending the visitors to a 28-13 margin with 7:39 on the clock.

Much to Cass City’s credit, theHawks refused to die and regainedtheir advantage at 35-28 with 3 quickscores.

Osentoski, who led Cass City with186 rushing yards, started the touch-down parade with a gallop from 30

yards out, followed by Morgan Erla’s6-yard pass reception on a 4th downplay that narrowed the gap to 28-27following Jeff Leslie’s fumble recov-ery.

With 4:57 left on the clock until thebreak, Osentoski and Janer each com-pleted first half hat tricks with scoresfrom 12 and 25 yards, respectively.

In contrast to the first half, neitherteam was able to sustain much of anattack after the intermission, as de-fense and a sloppy field dictated play.Still, the night belonged to Janer. He

recorded the only points in the finalhalf, scrambling from midfield intothe end zone and delivering defeat tothe Red Hawks.

CASS CITY’S Rob VanAuken and TJ Marker

(inset) teamed together to earn first team all-confer-

ence tennis honors in the Greater Thumb Confer-

ence, competing in the #3 Doubles slot.

who did everything they could tostand in his way.

makes us ask the misguided ques-tion, “Why should we help the poor,

that the companies producing the sea-sonal flu vaccine are also making theH1N1 vaccine.Although the health department has

been able to order a limited numberof H1N1 vaccine doses, none havebeen delivered yet.Hepfer said that first delivery will be

in the form of a nasal spray recom-mended for residents ages 2 to 49who have no chronic health problems. After that, vaccines should arrive, andcounty health officials are planning tooffer a mass vaccination program forstudents through the county’s K-12schools during the afternoon andevening hours.

Information has been sent to theschools and parents will be informedof the availability of the program aswell. “We’re in the planning process- we’re ready to go. We’re just wait-ing for the vaccine,” Hepfer said.

Compton agreed. “Banking on theeconomy to turn around - hopingsales tax revenue is going to startpumping into the economy - in thenext 12 months isn’t a good bet,” hesaid.

Michigan Education Association(MEA) officials joined school admin-istrators last week in lamenting Lans-ing’s budget solution.“While (the) cut of $165 per pupil is

less than what had been previouslyturned down by legislators, this cut isstill a deep one that will adversely im-pact the education of Michigan’s chil-dren. Reducing the per-pupil cut iscertainly a win for students. But thelack of a full investment in publicschools is disturbing, especially sincethe vast majority of our legislators ranfor office touting the importance of

Street within the village, as well asalong one block from the traffic lightsouth to the Elmwood Township-Gagetown Fire Hall.“The ones (water lines) that are there

have been there for years — they’vebeen there forever,” Wright said. Henoted the project will also includerepaving the street.

The grants are part of the Commu-nity Development Block Grant(CDBG) Infrastructure Capacity En-hancement (ICE) program, which isdesigned to accelerate economic de-velopment and assist communities inmaking necessary improvements orupgrades to existing public infrastruc-ture.

Wright was quick to laud the assis-tance of Don Duggar, a former CaroVillage manager and Rural Commu-nity Assistance Program official, withhelping his village complete all of thenecessary grant application paper-work and walking officials throughthe process.

Now, it’s just a matter of waiting forthe money to arrive.

“It (work) won’t begin until spring. We probably won’t get our money tillDecember,” Wright said, the projectis a final step in completing a host ofupgrades Gagetown officials havemanaged to complete over the years.

“We’ve got our water and sewer(systems) the way we want. We’repretty well set, and this will really setus up,” Wright said. “And, in the endwe’re saving our taxpayers $520,000.

Safe walkers...MORE THAN 100 Cass City students participated in the National Walk to

School Day last week. The school district’s Safe Routes 2 School Team helped

to get all of the students to school safely in spite of inclement weather, according

to team member Shari Bock, who noted all of the participating children enjoyed

education to our economic recovery,”MEA President Iris K. Salters said ina statement issued statewide.

“The lesson of the past 2 weeks isthat we have a chronic budget prob-lem — and cuts aren’t making it goaway,” Salters said. “After a decadeof budget shortfalls and cuts, moreshortfalls and cuts, we still lack thenecessary resources to invest in ourstate and our future. Next year, weface the potential of an even biggerhole in the budget — one that cannotbe filled with cuts alone.

“Our leaders in Lansing have lessthan a year to address our antiquatedtax structure and build a new one thathelps Michigan face the challenges ofa 21st century education. The simplefact is that we need tax reform thatleads to stable, predictable and suffi-cient revenue to pay for the serviceswe all want — sturdy roads and

bridges, police and fire protection, clean air and water, health care andespecially world class public schoolsfor our students,” she continued.

Roggenbuck “roundtable”set in Elmwood TownshipAmanda Roggenbuck, District One Tuscola County Commissioner is holding

Roundtables with Roggenbuck events throughout her district and is currentlyplanning a gathering in Elmwood Township Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 6:30to 7:30 p.m. at the Gagetown Municipal Building, 6437 S. State St., Gage-town.In an effort to make addressing concerns, questions and comments more con-

venient for residents, Roggenbuck is working with the local units of govern-ment in her district, which includes the Cass City area, to hold roundtablemeetings prior to the regularly scheduled local municipalities meetings. Thisapproach allows residents to have direct contact with 2 units of the govern-ment that represent them in one location and time.“Working with township and village boards to broaden the lines of commu-

nication and include as many of our residents as possible has been an excitingexperience so far. I hear from people regularly who are pleased to see a com-missioner interacting with them and listening to their concerns, in a place thatis convenient for them,” Roggenbuck said. The roundtable is open to everyone and all are encouraged to attend. “People

are curious as to how government truly functions, Roundtables are one wayof including them in the process, making the governing process more inclu-sive,” Roggenbuck added.
