School uniform issues are hotly debated. Many people feel strongly that school uniforms are the answer to a variety of problems seen in schools. On the other hand, there are numerous people who strongly oppose school uniforms, and believe that being forced to wear them will cause students more harm than good.

Self-ExpressionSupporters of school uniforms

believe they help to regulate the distraction of students who wear tight or revealing clothing, may help students to stop stereotyping and grouping themselves according to their clothing styles and could help to cut down on gang violence in schools if students are unable to wear gang colors.

Financial Burden

Many people believe that school uniforms can help families save money on their children's clothing. Kids often feel pressured to keep up with clothing styles and trends, which can be very costly. Supporters of school uniforms believe that they offer a substantial economic benefit for parents.

Sense of Community

An argument for school uniforms is commonly made that students can foster more of a sense of community and school spirit if they are all wearing the same thing. This can help students find common ground and form more of a sense of belonging to their school. Students from diverse backgrounds might be more likely to form friendships if they have this unifying bond.

One Size Fits All

If all students are wearing identical clothing, school uniform supporters believe this will force them to get to know their classmates and make judgements based upon personalities, not appearances. Instead of being able to stereotype someone based on their clothing, they will have to get to know them before they can decide what type of person they are.

GIVING HOMEWORK

Only in fifth grade and Jason Santos is already sick and tired of going to school.

Page 21: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORK

Attending a public elementary school in Cavite, Jason constantly complains about assignments and projects given by his teachers. He feels that doing homework is just a waste of time since the lessons will be discussed inside the classroom anyway.

Page 22: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORK

Jason also thinks that the projects that teachers require them to submit are a waste of effort and money. “Ang dami-dami nila pinapagawa pero parang wala naman kami natutunan,” the 11-year old boy claims.

Page 23: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORKS

Like other children who are more focused on play, Jason admits that doing assignments on weekends can be tiring. “Araw-araw na nga kami na nasa school at may assignments din kami kapag Sabado at Linggo,” he laments.

Page 27: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORK

2.However, it has been observed the parents complain about too many pupil’s homework/assignments, which rob themselves and their children’s quality time to be together and more enjoyable activities.

Page 28: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORK

3. Hence, it is advised that the teachers limit the giving of homeworks/assignment to a reasonable quantity to give their pupil’s ample time to rest and relax at home for the rest of the day.

Page 29: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORK

4. Therefore, no homework /assignments shall be given during weekends for pupils to enjoy their childhood, and spend quality time with their parents without being burdened by the thought of doing lot of homework.

SomeInsights

Page 31: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORK

Despite DepEd’s good intentions, public school teachers express dismay over the policy, describing it as “unnecessary” and as an “attack to teachers academic freedom guaranteed by the Constitution.”

Page 32: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORK

Members of Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC), a 30,000-strong group, said that DepEd’s memo is not necessary because assignments are not meant to burden the learners. “Homework is meant to teach students self-learning, self-discipline and time management,” says TDC national chairman Benjo Basas.

Page 33: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORK

TDC spokesperson Emmalyn Policarpio adds that teachers know what kind of assignments to give their students especially those that they can do on their own.

Page 34: School uniforms, ID, and Giving Homeworks

GIVING HOMEWORK

“Homework is not intended to burden children but can actually help them develop independence and discipline even without our supervision,” she explains.
