School NEWSLETTER WEEK 7, TERM 2 9th June 2020 PRINCIPALS MESSAGE What are you like when you are tired and angry? Have you ever done anything when you were angry that you later regretted? At the moment, our teachers are in a season that is often referred to in schools as report writing season. It is not unusual for teachers to find themselves more tired than is normally the case during this season. While I do not write many reports these days, I certainly have strong memories of past report writing seasons. Some of you may remember the good old floppy disc. It still appears as the save icon on many computers. Back in the day when I was teaching PE to every boy in the school I worked at, we would be given a floppy disc with the template for all our reports. Take the disc, do your reports on it and resubmit it. What could possibly go wrong? Well... at the end of a very late night of report writing, technology let me down. Tired, and frustrated, I foolishly ejected the disc and taught that disc a thing or two! Waking the next morning I fronted the reality of telling my boss what I had done. In destroying the disc I also successfully destroyed all the hours of work I had put into it. Needless to say, that particular reporting season was the longest and most difficult I have ever experienced. I was reminded of this story as I was reading through Ephesians recently. In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold”. Ephesians 4:26-27 There are lots of things that can make us angry in this world, and anger is a natural response to many of the injustices we come across; however, what we do with that anger is important. Many bad decisions have been made in anger. By dealing with our anger appropriately and not letting it fester, we can save both ourselves and others much grief. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, is easier said than done. Pray that God might strengthen you and assist you in this space. To provide a Christian education community founded on Biblically based beliefs, values and behaviour. Secondary School NEWS

Last week we were officially back to face-to-face teaching and the familiar rhythms of school are slowly returning. Students have had to work through many adjustments over the past few weeks and we are impressed with their ability to be flexible and demonstrate resilience when it has been required. In saying this, there are a handful of students who are struggling to adhere to our school expectations and so below are a few reminders that we would appreciate the students adhering to.

As a WCCS student, I will:

Wear my school uniform properly with no modifications/adjustments added.

Attend pick up duty on the day a uniform infringement is given.

Pack my bag with all of the required equipment for the day.

Be punctual to class for all lessons.

Pack my PE uniform when I have a practical lesson.

Treat my peers with respect.

Follow teacher instructions without resistance.

Play safely in the playground.

Charge my laptop the night before.

Keep my phone in my bag at all times or in the office if this is a struggle.

Behave appropriately on the bus and represent our school positively to the community.

WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE

Some of our Year 11 boys are taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave. They will be shaving their heads at school towards the end of term.

If you are able, we encourage you to sponsor our team to give families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need. By donating, you'll also fund vital research to help more people survive blood cancers, while improving their quality of life. Every day another 41 Australians are diagnosed with a blood cancer. That's one Aussie every 36 minutes. Although research is improving survival, sadly an Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours.

GRAND OPENING OF THE SENIOR AREA

Last week, Phase One of our new senior area was open to our Year 11 and 12 students. This is an exciting space that will eventually include not only the beautiful external seating areas and amenities that are currently being used, but also a study space and outdoor kitchen. Our senior students appreciate the provisions included in our building project and will responsibly steward the facilities as they pursue their studies.

REPORTING AND ASSESSMENT SEASON

As we head to the tail end of this semester, we embark on assessing student learning and gather the data for Half Yearly Reports. Students are encouraged to organise their tasks with a study timetable to assist in submitting tasks on time. They should seek assistance and submit drafts for feedback prior to the due date if they require further instructions. All classroom teachers are happy to help and appreciate student’s being proactive in their learning.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Semester 2 Parent Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Week 1 of Term 3, on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th July. These interviews will be taking place in line with Government guidelines around distancing etc. More information to come.

WCCS WHAT’S HAPPENING

AROUND SECONDARY SCHOOL CMT RETREAT Our Year 11 Christian Ministry & Theology (CMT) students recently had an online Retreat with over 250 other students from all around the country. On the Friday night, the boys ’zoomed’ in from a treehouse at Josh’s, while Emily and Mrs Drennan were in their own homes. Saturday, we were all able to get together and Zoom in from a room at Mrs Drennan’s church (or EV Church at Erina). The students really enjoyed the talks and electives, and have been challenged about where they have been basing their identity, the masks they use in life and the opportunity to hand those struggles to God. They were deeply encouraged by the reminder that they can have their identity in Christ because of what He has done and continues to do for them. In the afternoon, they enjoyed the electives they had chosen where they were in smaller Zoom groups of 15 to 20 students. By 6:15pm when it finished, everyone was exhausted and ready to go home and think about all they had been presented with over Friday night and Saturday.
