It is an exciting time for our staff and students as we all embark on successful teaching and learning for 2020. A special welcome to our new students/families who are attending Parklea for the first time. We wish you all a happy and settled start to the year. Our students are very welcoming of others and it has been pleasing to see them asking others to join them in activities. Parklea is a wonderful place to be! New staff to Parklea We would like to welcome our new relieving Deputy Principal, Zavera Shankaran who will be working with Stage 2-3 and the Multi-Categorical Classes. We welcome back Mrs Alicia Cardwell who will be the Assistant Principal of our Mutli-Categorical Classes. I invite you to get to know our new classroom teachers; Kristy Knox, Dimple Chan, Cathy Day and Angelica Farhat. We warmly welcome all these new teachers. We also welcome our new school counsellors, Ms Leonie Nahhas and Kerrie Marshall. Please refer to the website for a list of the classes for 2020 and the name/s of the classroom teacher/s. Family/School partnership Staff at our school like to work closely with parents/carers to ensure all students are settled and engaged at school. To work successfully, education needs to be a partnership between home and school. Please keep in touch with your classroom teacher. If something happens at home that may have an impact on their behaviour at school, please let us know. If something doesn’t make sense or you have a question, please come and talk to the classroom teacher. If we don’t know about something we can’t work with you to make it better. Staff are ready to listen, if it is a conversation that will take time, it is valuable to make a time to sit with the teacher to discuss your concern. Teachers are often busy at the start of the day with class preparations, so it would be appreciated if you could please email the school so a suitable time can be organised to catch up. On another note, we also love to hear the positives! We have already had parents/carers come in and email us to tell us how happy their child has been to come to school.

Early Pick up or Late Drop Off As per DoE and school policy, visitors or parents to the school during school hours are required to go to the Office. This is to ensure we know who is on premises and to comply with Child Safe regulations and implementation. If you are either picking up or dropping off outside of normal school times, please come straight to the Office and sign your child in or out and wait for them to come over to the Office. If you are picking up, we will arrange for your child to come across to the Office with their bag. If your child has forgotten their lunch or other items, please drop these into the Office and we will ensure your child gets them. Thank you for your support in keeping our school grounds safe. Attendance Children benefit from attending school all day every day and should only leave the school during operating hours for exceptional and unavoidable reasons. We ask that all parents visit our front office to collect or drop off their child during the school day. Please ensure that all partial and whole-day absences are explained promptly with an email to the office, note to the teacher or via the Sentral Parent Portal. Staff Car Park We ask that you do not use the staff car park as a walkway or parking area at any time. With the constant movement of vehicles in and out of the car park, it is not safe for pedestrian use. The car park is for staff parking only. Thank you for upholding our school expectations when entering or leaving the school. Canteen News If by chance your child has no lunch, food will be provided by the canteen and a IOU Blue Slip will be issued. It would be greatly appreciated if this could be paid as soon as possible. Message from the Department of Education You will have heard the news regarding Novel Coronavirus on the television, radio, internet or social media. While this news can be upsetting for many people it is important that we work together to support those who have been in the impacted areas. It is also very important that we don’t assume people who have a Chinese or other Asian background are linked to the spread of the Novel Coronavirus. Anti-Asian language and behaviour, or any other form of racism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our school community. Yours in excitement and anticipation of a great 2020,

Mrs Gracie (Principal), Mrs Mlinaric (Deputy Principal), Mrs Shankaran (R/Deputy Principal) and Ms Saunderson (R/Deputy Principal).

‘Just One Thing’ 2020

Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends, You are invited to participate in our ‘Just One Thing’ campaign for 2020. We hope to build on the success of last year’s campaign and give all families a chance to be involved in our school community. We would especially like to encourage new families to our school to get involved. Volunteering at the school is a great way to meet new people and make friends.

We have over 400 families attending Parklea Public School and we would be grateful if every family would nominate to do ‘just one thing’ throughout the year. Not only is this a great way to encourage school spirit and build up our community, it will also help raise vital funds for our school. These funds ensure our students are provided with the best equipment and teaching resources to make their schooling experiences positive and productive.

On the following page is a list of P&C events and ‘things’ that we would appreciate your assistance with. Please fill in your details, tick which events you can help with and drop your completed form into the P&C box located in the office. When the time comes you will be contacted regarding your participation in the event. We always try to it make your allocated time convenient for you, this will allow you to enjoy the event and help at the same time.

Yours Sincerely,

Jason Clinch Megan Lambert P&C President P&C Fundraising Coordinator
