From the desk of Mr. Wieters Dear St. Francis de Sales School Parents, Our St. Francis de Sales School 8th grade class recently had their class retreat at Holy Cross Parish in Wilmot. Our students, led by Mrs. Vanderwerff and Mr. Snyder participated in the retreat with the theme “Build Your Kingdom Here.” During the retreat, students participated in several activities that focused on faith building and prayer. First, they did a fun icebreaker called “Human Building Machines,” where our students acted out different machines and the others had to guess what they were. Students participated in two breakout sessions where they met in small groups to discuss questions about their faith. It was a great time for reflecting on our lives and our relationship with God. The class had a time for praise and worship too. In the afternoon, the students participated in a couple of prayer experiences. First, they learned how to do Lectio Divina, a prayer form for reflecting on Scripture readings. They also had a time for Eucharistic Adoration which ended in the guided meditation. Overall, it was a great time for our students to come together as a class and share their faith, share some laughs, and build up their community. Congratulations to all of our students who took part in the First Lego League competition on Sunday November 17th. Both of the Junior Lego League teams participated, and were able to share their project with judges:

• Team Fire Scouts earned the Super Storm Achievement. Attending Team members: Ben, Sam, Logan, Brandon, Riley and Calvin. Non-attending was Tori.

• Team Lego Warriors earned the Effort and Learning Achievement. Attending Team members: Alan, Jillian, Eleanor and Andy. Non-attending was Lily.

Team Cobra Commanders, (attending were Maddy, Danny, Sam H, Riley, Sam M and Calvin; non-Attending Carsten and Isaac) competed in a number of categories, including Project, Robot Technical, and Core Competencies. For their Project, the kids put on a skit for the judges detailing how a hurricane is formed and how it hits land. Along with that, they designed a house that could float and resist puncture by tree branches. Next, for the Robot Technical section, they met with the judges and discussed how they built and designed their robot, and created the programming code used to control the robot during the competition. The final morning challenge was the Core Competencies. During this phase of the competition, our participants talked about what it was like to work as a team and how they solved problems. The afternoon portion was the Robot challenge. The kids had three opportunities to get a high score. They earned 73 points in their 2nd match, which was their high score and placed them 18 out of 23. Our students in attendance brought lots of energy and excitement to the competition. Thank you to all of our parents who helped coach and work with our students: Julie Dantuma, Renee Howell, Rich Topf and Liz Wernquist. Thanks also to our parent volunteers: Steven and Erin Hornung, Jen Melchi and Mr. Freitag (Jen's father), who build the Lego table. Great job everyone! David Wieters
