Since the inauguraledition in 2010, the event has grown to become one of thelargest of its kind, hosting more than 130 delegates.

“In 2014 the conference had the theme ‘From Imitation toInnovation: Enriching Legal Scholarship’. 40 papers werepresented in 12 subject-specific streams, which were chairedby Queen Mary academics. The poster session provided anopportunity for 12 presenters to discuss their research in adynamic and interactive manner. Prizes were awarded to thebest three poster presenters.

In addition to these traditional sessions the conference hosteda soapbox session for the third year running. European Intellectual Property Network (EIPIN)

Unrivalled networking opportunities for IP studentsThe Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute(QMIPRI) was one of the four founder members of EIPINcreated in 1999. Over the last 15 years numerous QueenMary PG law IP students have benefited enormously fromattending EIPIN Congresses held at one of the six memberinstitutions, all leading IP institutions. www.eipin.org

Page 19: School of law postgraduate programmes

Leslie Lansman, USA, LLM in Intellectual Property (2012-13)

“EIPIN is one of the most unique andrewarding experiences that Queen Mary offers.

“During the conference students listento academics from across the world. It is an amazing opportunity to hear

from leading figures in the IP world in a setting geared to, and focused on, the attending students. The topics aim atdiscussing some of the most relevant, and often controversial, issues currently facing those interested in IP.

“Students are encouraged to network and continue thediscussion once the lectures end through planned dinner and social events. This is what makes EIPIN truly remarkable.Often in such conferences, once the conference endsparticipants rarely hear from each other again. Since EIPIN is held twice, attendees truly have the opportunity to cementand build upon existing relationships. It is almost like takinganother LLM program. And, perhaps most importantly, EIPINis tremendous fun.”

Luxmi Raj, UK, MSc in Management of IntellectualProperty (2012-2013)

“As an MSc student I had theunparalleled opportunity to apply andparticipate in the EIPIN. Each yearstudents from the different institutionsare mixed up for the purpose ofcollaboratively researching and writing a

paper on an IP topic. In addition, students travel and attendlectures given by noted academics and practitioners, on IPissues which are topical but are generally not discussed in theclassroom, thereby introducing the students to more nuancedareas in IP.”

Internship opportunity at the United Nations Conference forTrade and Development (ICT Analysis section), Switzerland

Ngozi Onodugo, Nigeria (LLB, (Queen Mary), Master of Laws 2012-13)was selected to do a 3-month (June-August) internship with the UnitedNations Conference for Trade andDevelopment (ICT Analysis section) in Switzerland. She will be involved in projects and tasks related to E-commerce and Law Reform

Programmes for developing countries.

“I am working with the United Nations Conference on Tradeand Development (UNCTAD); the ICT Analysis section ontheir e-Commerce and Law Reform Programme. TheProgramme helps developing countries understand theimportance of ICT and the need for the establishment ofeffective legal frameworks on e-Commerce and ICT throughcapacity building activities.

“My role is to do research on the existing legal frameworks of developing countries which have approached UNCTAD for assistance and assist with the capacity building activities.

“Doing the LLM definitely helped with the internships –I probably would not have known about the internship if Iwasn't on the programme. In addition, my dissertation (Title:Digital Convergence and Mobile Payments: A Critical Analysisof Mobile Payments Regulation in Nigeria), is in an area thatis related to the work I am doing with UNCTAD. I came aboutthe topic as a result of a comment made by my E-Commercelecturer, Professor Chris Reed about mobile paymentsservices in Nigeria which I did not realise existed before this. I therefore have some knowledge now of developments in thearea of mobile commerce and this is assisting me in myresearch assignments here.”

Edward Bayliss, UKSchool of Law Scholarship Winner2013-14, LLM in Energy and NaturalResources Law

“After I passed the English Bar exams in2012 I applied to take the LLM in orderto specialise in a particular area of thelaw because I felt this would provide me

with a competitive advantage in a highly competitive globallegal jobs market. When making my decision as to whichinstitutions to apply, what stood out was that lawyers I spoketo all thought Queen Mary had a reputation as a renownedacademic institution, which made it an excellent choice ofinstitution for me to take postgraduate study.

“I found it very helpful that Queen Mary post all the moduleoptions on the website for prospective students like me tomake an informed decision over the course content andwhich modules and specialisms to select. The courseadministrators allow us time at the beginning of term toexperience classes before we have to formalise our moduleselections which is also helpful.

“I elected to take the Energy and Natural Resources Law LLMspecialism and the available modules on offer covered thewhole legal spectrum relating to the energy sector, including;commercial and transactional energy law, regulatory law, environmental law to international dispute resolution. Thecourse itself has been excellent. It has opened my eyes as tohow the energy industry drives global economy and hasincreased my depth of understanding of international law andits interaction with domestic law. The course has been taughtby professors and academics who have been publishedextensively in the areas they teach so I am reassured that Iam receiving education from first class teachers (indeed, oneProfessor, a leading international arbitrator, had even sat asan arbitrator on one case we discussed in his lecture!).

“Finally, it has been a great experience to meet fellowstudents from so many different nationalities and cultures, one that will definitely improve me as a student and lawyer. From one student to other prospect students, I can commendthe Queen Mary LLM.

Student views

Page 25: School of law postgraduate programmes

Lu He, China, LLM in Banking andFinance Law, Scholarship Winner2013-14

“Prior to coming to Queen Mary I studiedat Northwest A&F University in Xi'an,China, and worked for Jiangxi HuichangCounty Court and Guangdong HaoyueLaw Firm for general civil law cases.

Queen Mary is definitely my top choice for its global approach, prestigious programs, and its location in the city of London, theeconomic and legal centre of the UK and the CCLS isundoubtedly one of the best institutions with an excellentreputation amongst all British law schools. I have honestlybenefited a lot from the CCLS. I find the modules within theLLM in Banking and Finance very useful and practical and helpme gain an extensive and thorough knowledge of regulation ofinternational financial markets. All the academics are veryprofessional and approachable; I can always get useful adviceand immediate help from them whenever I am in need. Also, invited lecturers from top law firms and famous financialorganisations provide different perspectives for our classes. Ihope to be able to use my expertise gained from the course toparticipate in legislation and judiciary decision-makingprocesses for my home country.”

Marcel Campbell, UKCurrent Student – Distance Learning LLMin Computer and Communications Law Director, Information Security, ThomsonReuters Corporation, New York

“My background is as a technologist.Over the last decade a myriad ofregulations that pertain to the use of

information have become central to designing an effectivesolution. The course helped me better understand the rules, their intent and to apply them in practise. I particularlyenjoyed the Privacy and Data Protection, Media Law andInternet Content Regulations modules, which were topical at the time and spurred many interesting debates with tutorsand other students. Technology is used very effectively todeliver content and enable collaboration on the course. Istrongly recommend this course for both Technologists andLegal practitioners.”

Elina Spyropoulou, Greece, MSc Law and Finance partial scholarship winner2013-2014 CCLS/School of Economicsand Finance

“Prior to my enrolment in the MSc in Lawand Finance, I had been working as anin-house lawyer for a limited company inGreece, focusing on issues related to civil

litigation, company and insolvency law.

“Although I had received offers from various renowneduniversities, I opted for Queen Mary for a variety of reasons.Primarily the fact that the degree awarded in the completion ofthe programme is an MSc and not an LLM demonstrates that bythe end of the academic year students will have acquired notjust plain knowledge of the legal provisions related to finance butalso an insight on the operation and structure of the financialsystem. Furthermore renowned academics and guest lecturersteach the programme.

“I am very pleased with my choice. The courses are demandingbut provide an incentive to students to do their own research, challenge conventional approaches and factor in theirassessments market dynamics. I have to admit that the modulesundertaken in the School of Finance seemed challenging at thebeginning but the school provides comprehensive tutorialsupport. Now the inherent difficulties of making the leap to highfinance have to a large extent subsided. The ability to interactand work together with my fellow students has been veryrewarding. The programme encourages collaboration and thefact that students have different backgrounds (financial, legal orboth) further promotes an interdisciplinary approach to currentfinancial affairs.

“We are witnessing a rapid restructuring of the legal andfinancial landscape and I believe this programme is structuredto meet the demand for new professionals with advancedknowledge in both fields.”

Olivier C Herbreteau, France, Senior Patent Counsel, SANOFI LLM in Intellectual Property Law 2013-2015, Paris Programme, Part-time

“In 2011, I left private practice andswitched for an in-house position in aglobal and diversified healthcare leader, where I am responsible for evaluating

and negotiating IP rights involved in business transactions(merger, acquisition, licensing, collaboration). My newposition immersed me in an international environment, wherelegal matters are often negotiated under common law. I thusfelt the need to strengthen my educational background inInternational Commercial Law and Intellectual Property Law.My employer fully encouraged me in this direction andproposed to sponsor an LLM at Queen Mary.

Lucila Lobo, Brazil, LLM in Law andEconomics, FGV Direito Rio/FGV DireitoGV Sao Paulo Winner of the CCLSScholarship 2013-14

“My experience as in-house counsel inthe regulatory law department of Brazil´slargest telecommunication company 'OiS/A' taught me that framing issues

involving public interest in purely legal terms is not enough.

“This experience motivated me to look for different tools, grounded in economic theory, to tackle contentious legalissues. This is why I decided to pursue a LLM in Law andEconomics at Queen Mary. The programme provides theessential instruments to develop a sound understanding ofkey economic principles through the core courses whichcover microeconomics and behavioural economicfoundations. When I return to legal practice, I will be able to unlock new solutions by bringing to bear an economic-analytical perspective as well as broadening the debatebeyond the traditional theoretical model of justice and equityto include a consideration of efficiency and costs.

“In addition, my colleagues' economic background as well astheir international / multi-jurisdictional experiences also creates achallenging study environment. Classes are interactive andeverybody is invited to share their point of view and to participatein case-studies. This has to be the best way to develop a legalmind set and to enhance my problem solving capabilities.”

Chiara Boeynaems, Belgium, LLM inEuropean Law 2013-14

“Right before I joined Queen Mary, I completed a Master in Law at theUniversity of Antwerp, including oneterm at the University of Trento. Duringmy studies, I familiarised myself asmuch as possible with the world of

Immigration Law. Specifically, I did an internship with theBelgian authorities and at a law firm.

“Still, I wanted to further explore the field of Immigration Law,preferably in an international setting in order to increase mycareer opportunities. I was attracted by both the courses andthe experienced lecturers at Queen Mary. I chose to study‘Comparative Immigration and Nationality Law’, ‘EU Justiceand Home Affairs’ and ‘Terrorism and Human Rights’. One ofthe best things about my course, is that classes require a lotof independent work and active participation in thediscussion. Students are motivated to speak up and sharetheir knowledge.”

“Before studying in Queen Mary, I wasworking in the Office of the President ofthe Philippines where my work centredon the development of varying policies, mostly in the legal, economic anddevelopmental spheres. Having been

“My choice naturally went to the LLM in Intellectual PropertyLaw, which is internationally recognized for its Professors andthe variety and the quality of its teachings. In addition, havingthe opportunity to take my LLM as a part-time student inParis, and to split my modules over two academic yearsinstead of one, allows me to combine a high quality trainingresponding to my expectations while continuing to performmy professional duties normally.

“Today, I can genuinely say that the LLM in IntellectualProperty Law perfectly fits my academic expectations. Inaddition, it brings a new perspective to my daily practice, which is beneficial both personally and professionally. I would recommend it to any IP law practitioner!”

granted a Chevening Scholarship, I chose to go to QueenMary as I was drawn to the wide array of modules beingoffered. I signed up for Corporate Governance, Terrorism andHuman Rights Law, and the Law of the Sea, subject matterswhich I feel are very relevant to the current Philippinesituation. I am also very much impressed with the outstandingcredentials of the Queen Mary LLM professors who are alwayswilling to engage in constructive debates in class. The studentsupport system and the facilities of Queen Mary are also veryremarkable. Queen Mary has beautiful campuses acrossLondon which makes each school day a worthwhileexperience. My experience in Queen Mary, and in London ingeneral, will greatly help me when I return to my country tocontinue working for the government.”
