Closing and Prayer ...............................................................................................................................Dr. Doris Gomez
Commissioning Ceremony is a special event that offers a time of prayer, dedication, preparation, and sending
forth that represents not only an end, but also a beginning. This ceremony recognizes the outstanding
achievements of our graduating students, and of our alumni who have made significant contributions not only to
their fields of endeavor, but also to the quality of life both in our nation and abroad.
Message from the Dean
Congratulations, Class of 2020!
Commissioning, especially in the Christian context, marks the moment when the Master entrusts His message to His
disciples and sends them out into the world with full confidence that they will faithfully embody all they have been
taught, not only by their words, but by their actions as well.
This is a high calling. A sacred mission.
After years of hard and faithful work, Jesus sends you out today as the hope and healers of a wounded world. He sends
you out to be Christian Leaders to Change the World.
Today, we celebrate you and your great accomplishment. Although we are sending you forth in Jesus’ name, we will
remain connected by our eternal bond in Christ Jesus, our love for Regent University, our time together in the School of
Business & Leadership, and our commitment to Christ-centered business & leadership.
“May the Spirit of the Lord God be upon you; may He anoint you to preach good news to the poor; may He send you to
bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners; may you
always comfort those who mourn and bestow on them a crown of beauty; may you rebuild ancient ruins, restore places
long devastated and renew ruined cities,” (Isaiah 61, paraphrased).
May you be the Christian Leaders that Change the World.
For His Glory. By His Spirit.
Doris Gomez, Ph.D.
Dean
“…All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am
with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)
Academic Regalia
The wearing of academic regalia dates back to the 12th century and has been a tradition in American academic institutions since colonial days.
The associate’s and bachelor’s gowns fall in a straight line and have pointed sleeves. The long black master’s and
doctoral gowns are similar except for the sleeves, which are oblong on the master’s gown and bell-shaped on the
doctoral gown. The doctoral gown also has velvet trimmings on the front and sleeves, with the three bars signifying the
number of degrees of the graduate. In recent years, several institutions have elected to change the graduate gown color to their official school colors.
The graduates’ hoods are lined with colors representing the degree-granting institution (e.g., blue and green for Regent University) and edged in colors representing the degree major (other than Ph.D.s, which are all dark blue):
Crimson ............................... Communication, Journalism
Brown................................... Fine Arts
Royal Blue ........................... Leadership Studies, Doctor of Psychology
Scarlet .................................. Divinity
White .................................... Counseling
Purple................................... Law
Drab ..................................... Business
Light Blue ............................ Education
Peacock Blue ....................... Government
These strange shaped hoods originally served the very practical purpose of helping medieval scholars keep their heads
warm while they worked in unheated university buildings. The most common master’s and bachelor’s cap is the four-cornered mortarboard. Doctoral candidates wear the traditional six-sided tam.
Graduates wearing red, white and blue honor cords are active duty and honorably discharged veterans of our nation’s
military service branches. We salute these service men and women for their academic achievements and for their duty and sacrifice to our country.
Graduates wearing gold honor stoles are being recognized as recipients of Latin honors. Other graduates with various
cords are members of one of the following academic honor societies: Alpha Phi Sigma, Beta Phi, Chi Sigma Lota,
Lambda Pi Eta, Phi Alpha Delta, Pi Sigma Alpha, Psi Chi, Sigma Beta Delta and Sigma Tau Delta. Student Government leaders are also wearing cords with the Regent colors of royal blue and green.
Candidates for Graduation
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and
not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
