Apollonian Society News Summer 2008

Message from the Co-ChairsAs the summer winds down, we wanted to take an opportunity to connect with our fellow supporters and reflect on all that we have accomplished together.

In fiscal year 2007-08, alumni and friends pledged $240,000 to the Apollonian Society to enhance the student experience and uphold the reputation of the School. In recent years, students have formed a Student Apollonian Group and have directed funds toward the publication of The Explorer research journal and the purchase of equipment for enhanced patient care. As active supporters, you know that the Apollonian Society provides these and other significant benefits, but you may not know how much our students appreciate your generosity. In the senior class survey, they named

the White Coat Ceremony and patient care subsidy (both funded by the Apollonian Society) among the most meaningful aspects of dental school.

Each and every gift to the Apollonian Society makes a difference, and we thank you for your support. We hope you enjoy reading our inaugural newsletter and wish you all the best.

UCLA Fund Redefines Its FocusSince the close of Campaign UCLA, the UCLA Fund has broadened its focus to maximize donor choice and provide a level of consistency across UCLA professional school annual funds. We answer some commonly asked questions about the changes below.

What does this mean for Apollonian Society donors? As a donor to the Apollonian Society, the School of Dentistry’s annual fund, you may be contacted by both the School of Dentistry and the UCLA Fund over the course of the upcoming fiscal year. Regardless of who contacts you, it is important to know that you may designate your gift specifically to the School of Dentistry, or any other area that you wish. Development officers at either central campus or Dentistry are able to assist you, and are working together to coordinate their fundraising efforts to minimize confusion.

When will I be contacted? The School of Dentistry will continue to send an end-of-year mailing in late November, asking for your support of the Apollonian Society. The UCLA Fund contacts donors year-round based on their gift “anniversary” - typically one year from the date of their first gift.

Can my gift to the Apollonian Society qualify me to become a Chancellor’s Associate?Yes. Annual gifts of $2,500 or more to unrestricted campus funds, including the Apollonian Society, qualify donors for Chancellor’s Associates status. Chancellor’s Associates ensure that UCLA remains one of the most respected universities in the world and enjoy numerous benefits. Learn more by calling (310) 794-2363 or visiting www.uclafund.ucla.edu/leadership.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact the School of Dentistry Development Office at (310) 206-0215. Thank you for your support.

A Recent Graduate’s TestimonialWhen the Apollonian annual fund transformed into the membership-based Apollonian Society in 2004, our primary mission became enhancing the student experience. Feedback from students and new alumni indicates that we are succeeding. Former class president and recent graduate Jake Cragun, DDS ’08 shared his perspective on UCLA dental school at the annual May alumni luncheon in Anaheim, saying:

“The Apollonian Society has helped to create an environment that far surpasses expectations of a public institution. We now have cubicles to call home, endodontic microscopes for undergraduate use, and funds to care for patients that cannot otherwise afford treatment, a gift that enables us to graduate on time. Since 2004

my classmates have become happier students. If my younger brother wanted to be a dentist, I would tell him, without hesitation, to attend UCLA.”

Your Gifts in ActionIn the past four years, Apollonian Society members have contributed more than $1.2 million to the UCLA School of Dentistry. Your generous gifts have funded the annual White Coat Ceremony, a patient care subsidy, and numerous student-initiated projects, including the publication of three editions of The Explorer journal of UCLA dental student research and the purchase of computers, endodontic surgical microscopes and digital cameras. Thank you!

Class of 2012 White Coat CeremonyThe UCLA School of Dentistry cordially invites you to join us for the annual tradition of welcoming the newest members of our community. A favorite milestone among students and parents alike, the ceremony includes remarks from Dean No-Hee Park, the presentation of white coats from the Apollonian Society, and the reciting of the Dental Student’s Pledge. RSVP to (310) 206-0215 or [email protected] by September 2.
