Principal’s Report Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

Nepal fundraising

We have raised over $1500 as part of our Nepal fundraising effort. A big thank you

to everyone who has supported this very worthy cause. The funds raised will go di-

rectly to the villages most effected by the earthquake, particularly the small village

of Jibajibe that the “Dress Up” expedition trekkers stayed in. The Nepalese commu-

nity will take years to recover and Michelle and I are extremely grateful that my sis-

ter’s family arrived safely home less than a week before the earthquake struck. I will

continue to keep everyone informed as the weeks pass, particularly if we are asked

to donate items of clothing and other essentials.

125th celebration

A tremendous thank you to our whole community for their support of the 125th

birthday celebrations. It was an absolutely fantastic day and a wonderful example of

our community spirit and support. A special thank you to Mrs Pozo for her extraordi-

nary leadership and organisational skills to ensure we all had a wonderful day.

ANZAC Day

Last Friday we hosted our ANZAC Day service with Warrant Officer Bill Vanetten

as our special guest. Warrant Officer Vanetten and myself planted a “Lone Pine tree”

near the flagpole and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the service.

Thank you to the parents who came along and commented most positively on the

way the ceremony was conducted and on the wonderful behaviour of the students.

The 100 year anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli is a most significant and emo-

tional occasion and the students demonstrated with their behaviour, their bringing

and laying of flowers and planting of poppies, their understanding of such an im-

portant day in Australia’s history.

Thank you to Miss Birkett and the SRC for organising and presenting the service.

Channel Ten and Tim Bailey

We were certainly put on the map with the publicity we received from Monday’s vis-

it by Tim Bailey and Channel 10. It was a very exciting afternoon with many teach-

ers, students, parents and visitors being part of the live telecast. I was very grateful

for the wonderful comments Tim made about how our school is so family and com-

munity oriented and the great atmosphere and enthusiasm that is generated.

A special thank you to Ms Birkett for her organisation of the day.

2015-2017 School Plan and 2104 Annual School Report

Please note that these two important documents are on our school website. Please

take the time to read them as they set our strategic directions over the coming three

years.

Stage 3 Leadership Training

During week 10 of term 1, Stage 3 students had leadership training to prepare themselves for peer support. On the first day we had to get into groups and gather materials to make something to protect an egg from breaking. Stage 3 collected newspaper, straws, scissors and tape. When everyone made one, we all went out-side and had a drop test. Some designs survived 4 times while some only lasted 1-3 times. It was such a great activity!

After that we split into 5 groups. Each group went to different rooms to do all sorts of activities like finger printing with ink, learning that smoking is NOT GOOD for you and making smoking danger signs. Everyone had lots of fun. It was an awesome day.

On day 2 we did another experiment that was even better than the first. We had to go back into groups but this time, we had to use 1 piece of paper and design something to get the whole group through it. Only 2 groups managed to complete it. Then Ms Meggitt showed us how to do it. She could fit 8 people through one piece of paper!

We finished the training off with the with the teachers talking to us about how to be a great peer support leader. Stage 3 had a fantastic time learning how to be a peer support leader. We will take this information with us on Fridays during term 2 when we have peer support. Thank you to all the teachers who helped with all the activities and for organising this event .

ANZAC Day

Our ANZAC day on Friday the 24th of April was very respectful and caring. Thank you to all the students, teachers and parents who made this event so special. A very special thank you to our special guest Warrant Officer William Van Etten. It was a pleasure having him as part of our service.

Thank you also to Ms Pozo and Mr Brims for being part of the Official Party. The SRC members did an incredible job running the service and it was very much ap-preciated.

ANZAC FACTS: The ANZAC tradition – the ideals of courage, endurance and mateship that are still relevant today was established on the 25

th of April 1915 when the Australian and

New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

The ANZACs lost 8,000 men at Gallipoli and a further 18,000 were wounded. The ANZACs went on to serve with distinction in Palestine and on the Western Front in France.

Australia had a population of five million – 330,000 served in war and 59,000 were killed. New Zealand with a population of one million lost 18,000 men out of 110,000 and had 55,000 wounded.

125th Birthday Celebration

On Saturday the 28th of March, Bossley Park had its 125th birthday celebration. On

this day we had a massive turnout with lots of students, their families and friends as well as community members.

Throughout the day we had many performances like dancing, skipping, singing and many more! At the oval we had many rides like bumper cars, lots of different jumping castles, haunted house and other amazing rides. In the ball games area, we had delicious food and stalls where the community were showcasing their products. On the bottom oval we had whip cracking demonstrations and a football clinic run by Jeff Stanmore from Bossley Park High School. To finish this wonderful event, there were fireworks lighting up the sky.

It was a great day for those who attended. Thank you to all the people who helped

on this day. A big thank you Pam Pozo and the committee for organising this event

We hope everyone had a great time!

Here are some photos from the day. More can be found on Facebook or our school

website.

Library News

Welcome to Term 2.

The month of May is National Family Reading Month. All students in our school have been provided with a Reading Log. To participate students need to read for at least 10 minutes every day in May and fill in the log with the minutes spent reading. From June 1–15 students or their parents/guardians can go online to www.scholastic.com.au/nfrm and enter the competition. Students need to ask their parents to sign their log and to keep it in a safe place. Winners will be announced in July.

Our students are beginning to make good progress with The N.S.W. Premier’s Reading Challenge. The following students have already completed The Chal-lenge: Natasha Wood 4/5A, Alex Wood 6C, Zara Winfry 4/5A, 1G, Leonardo Russo 1T, Ilayda Basak 1T, Hailey Greer 4/5A and Anastasia Drpa 4/5A. As part of our 125th birthday celebrations, we wanted to interview teachers who have seen a lot of changes to Bossley Park Public School. Here is the interview: How long have you been teaching at Bossley Park? Mrs Betts - This is my 30

th year at Bossley Park.

Mrs Gurlica - 15 years. Mrs Zammit – This is my 21

st year at Bossley Park

What was Bossley Park like when you first started teaching? Mrs Betts – It was completely different from what it looks like today. There were demountables all over the ball games asphalt and the rest of the school was a construction site. Mrs Gurlica – The school looked a little bit different. There were more demountable buildings where the ball games playground is now. Mrs Zammit – When I arrived, there were approximately 600 students. Bossley Park was similar. There were lots of demountables around the teacher’s car park and the kindergarten rooms. What kind of school activities were there back then? Mrs Betts – There were clubs, sewing, basket making and gardening. Everyone joined a club. Mrs Gurlica – We still had PSSA and we also had gardening and choir. Mrs Zammit – Very similar activities. Some of them were cross country, athletics carnival and the Easter hat parade. There were no gardening or extension groups. The studio was a classroom so there was no art there. There were no mixed classes or stage classes. There were only straight grades.

Teacher Interview By Gabrielle and Kayla

Term one has flown very quickly in the studio. The senior students have completed their ceramic tiles for our 125th celebration wall and some have already glazed them. Next term, the junior students will be creating theirs in the studio. During our celebrations on the Saturday, former students and teachers were invited to come to the studio and contributes their creations for the wall.

Next term will be just as busy with lots of activities and competitions that the students will be entering.

Once again, I am collecting materials for our artworks. Please look around and see if you have anything that you don’t need such as old stockings, wire coathangers, polystyrene meat and vege trays, magazines, wire, buttons, wool, scrap ma-terials, wallpaper, coloured paper, sewing material, left over flyscreen/gutter guard and anything else you may feel is scrap. These would be much appre-ciated by the students and myself.

Please leave items on the tables in the studio before or after school.

Parent helpers are always welcome on Wednesdays and Thursdays

9am – 2.50pm.

Thank you,

Nika Norman.

Here are some fun and interesting facts about our school! Our school started as an English – styled farmhouse called

‘Edensor’.

In 1890, there were only 22 students at this school.

Edina Henry, 22, was the first teacher.

There were 20 students in a classroom.

The classrooms were awfully hot in summer and freezing in winter.

After a while, the classrooms started to decay and they were

infested with white ants.

In 1894, there were only 12 students enrolled so Miss Henry was

transferred to Granville and the school was closed.

It was re – opened in 1900 due to James Martin complaining there

was no school for his nine children to attend.

When the school re – opened, there were 40 students enrolled.

40 students were crowded into one classroom which could only fit

24 students. 7 or 8 students were crowded on one desk with some

students sitting on boxes.

During the war, the teacher closed the school for a day just to

farewell his son who was leaving to go to war.

In 1926, they finally had paper and pencil. If you weren’t rich

enough to buy an eraser, you had to lick your finger and rub the

paper to get rid of the mistakes.

In 1987, a library, hall, administration block and eight new class-

rooms were built.

In 2010, the kindergarten block was built.
