Draw a line from the sux to its meaning. Hint: If you're stuck, think of a word you know that ends with that sux.

Suxes–ful –ist –ly

Circle the words with suxes in the paragraph below.

You don’t have to be a botanist to grow your own food! The warmest time of year is best for planting some seeds, while others can only grow when planted during colder times. Some plants, like tomatoes, become droopy if you don’t water them daily. You must make sure the soil has just the right amount of wetness for each type of plant. Gardening can be dicult, but the right knowledge can make it easier.

Living Things and Their Habitats

Living Things and Their HabitatsThis text is excerpted from an original work of the Core Knowledge Foundation.

Ecology is about nature and life. It is about the relationships between living things and their

environment. Someone who studies ecology is an ecologist. An ecologist studies living things

and the way they relate to their surroundings.

This toad is part of an ecosystem. An ecosystem is like a habitat where an organism lives, but

it includes many habitats plus the nonliving systems that support them. In an ecosystem, each

living thing depends on other living and nonliving things for survival. Insects find shelter and

food on trees and in moss. The toad finds those insects and eats them. The toad depends on

rainfall to supply a place to lay eggs. One day, maybe a snake will eat the toad. These are the

kinds of things ecologists like to think about!

This toad is part of an ecosystem.

Living Things and Their Habitats

The bee is attracted to the flower's bright color. The bee eats the flower's sweet nectar. The

flower is also full of pollen. Pollen is a substance that looks like dust. When the bee buzzes

off, it carries some of the flower's pollen away on its feet and wings. To make seeds, flowers

must share their pollen with other flowers. Flowers do not have hands or feet or any other way

to get their pollen to other flowers. So, they depend on bees and other insects to spread it for

them. The bee needs the flower in order to survive. The flower needs the bee and other

insects in order to survive. These are perfect examples of the kind of relationships ecologists

like to study.

Pennsylvania: The Keystone State

Bushkill Falls is sometimes called the “Niagara of Pennsylvania.” These waterfalls are a beautiful place to visit and to explore

more of Pennsylvania’s nature. Photo from: Getty Images/EyeEm/Justin Bereman.

People have lived in Pennsylvania for a long time. The first people arrived almost 20,000 years

ago. This was long before the area was called Pennsylvania. It was just open land then.

Thousands of years later, Native Americans lived on the land. Many different tribes lived there.

The Lenape, Erie and Seneca are examples.

In 1681, a man named William Penn arrived. He was from England. Mr. Penn sailed across

the sea to America. He started a colony and named it Pennsylvania.

In the 1700s, England and France fought a war. The countries fought for Pennsylvania. They

both wanted the land. England won in 1763.

After England won, it made the colonies pay for the war. Many people thought this was unfair.

They were angry. So they decided to fight back.

In 1775, people met in Pennsylvania to plan a new country. Thomas Jefferson was there. He

said that the American people should be free. They should not be ruled by England.

England disagreed. This began the Revolutionary War. Eventually, the American people won.

They were free from England. The Americans called their new country the United States of

America. Pennsylvania was the second state to join. That was in 1787.

Why Is It Called That?

Pennsylvania means “Penn’s woods.” William Penn named it for his father.

The state has a nickname, too. It is called the Keystone State. This might be because it is in

the middle of the first 13 states. A keystone is the middle stone in a curved stone doorway. It is

an important stone. It holds the arch together.

Welcome to 3-5 Art Class!

Option #1: Found Object Color Wheel

“What is a found object?” Cup, plants, books, clothing, food, cans/bottles, shoes… anything!

How To Make Your Own Found Color Wheel:

1. Find a spot where you can create a color wheel using items you can find.

2. Identify our six rainbow colors, in “rainbow order”. (red, orange, yellow, green, blue & purple)

3. Look for three items that are primary colors! (one red, one blue & one yellow)

4. Place your red, blue and yellow items in a triangle. (see below)

5. Look for our three secondary colors, remember that these are colors that come from our

primary colors! (one orange, one green & one purple)

6. Place the secondary colors in-between the primary colors:

a. What color do you get when you mix blue and yellow? (green)

b. What color do you get when you mix yellow and red? (orange)

c. What color do you get when you mix red and blue? (purple)

7. Identify your six tertiary colors, remember these are color that are made by mixing a primary

color with a secondary color! (ex. Red-Purple)

8. Add your six tertiary colors in between the primary and secondary colors!

a. Red-Purple, Red-Orange, Orange-Yellow, Yellow-Green, Green-Blue, Blue-Purple
