The choir sang American Authors, ‘Best day of my life’, for NZ Music month, Crowded House ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’, Pharrell Williams, Happy’ and Ylvis ‘ What does The Fox Say’. The choir sang with the kapa haka group too. It was our very first performance. I thought it was exciting and I had lots of fun singing in front of a big crowd. There were lots of different activities and heaps of yummy food. - by Jessie Burrell Team RIPPA RUGBY TOURNAMENT On Tuesday 27th May we took 4 teams to the interschool rippa rugby tournament - 2 social teams and 2 competitive teams. All teams impressed with their attitude, skill and behaviour. From the 4 teams the players of the day were: Ruru, Ben, Nathaniel and Andrew The fair play awards went to Emma, Wiremu, Vasiliki and Braedan S. Thank you to the parents who helped manage teams and provide transport. The highlight for me was: - winning the last game against Victory to come fifth overall. - Jonti - getting in the semi finals (of the social competition) and scoring lots of tries. - Brayden PORTABLE PACKING As part of our initiative The Green Ninjas are encouraging students to a ‘Be Zero Hero’. Students will continue to put their food waste in the scrap buckets and to wash their yoghurt pottles so they can be recycled. One aim of our endeavour is to reduce the rubbish created in our community. If we throw out a little less then our landfill will not fill up so quickly having a positive effect on our city. We are exploring ways to show our students how this is possible. - Heidi Newlands, Coordinator I Can - I Will 69 Muritai Street Phone (03) 548 6167 Fax (03) 548 6761 Tahunanui E-mail [email protected] Ka taea - ka tutuki SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY 7yr & under boys 7yr & under girls 8yr old boys 1st Tim Newson 1st Lydia Fehse 1st Callum Robertson 2nd Jamie Bryant 2nd Naomi Robertson 2nd=Wade Walker 3rd James Cheyne 3rd Jacey Adams 2nd=Jackson Yates 3rd Ben Roff 8yr girls 9yr boys 9yr girls 1st Stella Dallimore 1st Sam Newson 1st Kate Bryant 2nd Tui Hegglun 2nd Henry Grab 2nd Kaia Marsh 3rd Lovinia Pluck 3rd Ruru Taura 3rd Georgia Iorns 10yr boys 10yr girls 1st Robbie McIntosh 1st Iesha Preston-Walker 2nd Isaiah Konelio 2nd Isis Bruning 3rd Riley O’Hara 3rd Georgia Dallimore 11yr girls 11yr boys 1st Emily Dickson 1st Bradean Scott 2nd Jonti Austin Well done to all those who participated in this great event on a glorious day at the beach. TAHUNA TUATARA

AWARD Maggie O’Hara received the Tahuna Award because she is a helpful, kind, positive member of Room 4. If she sees a job that needs doing around the class she just gets stuck in and quietly gets it done, often without others noticing. But the teacher does notice! She is supportive of others when they get stuck and always has kind words to say.

Maggie adds to our discussions with her well thought out ideas, sense of humour and energy. The positive attitude that she brings to school each day is wonder-ful to see and adds to the great feeling that is part of being in Room 4. Well done Maggie!

SCHOOL VALUES

Confidence To show confidence is to feel okay with who you are. At school this means: - being able to take risks and not being too concerned about making mistakes - trying different activities without fear - being independent but not separate - recognising and making good choices

JARGON CORNER

Inquiry Learning Inquiry Learning happens when all activities at school revolve around a particular topic. Our inquiry cycle begins with knowledge “Why are we inquiring? “ and “What do we know now?” We then begin the investigating stage “What are our questions?” We move on to working it through “What are our learning steps?” Once these stages are complete further investigation begins “How will we research?” followed by sharing our ideas and actions “How will we present our learning?” Throughout the inquiry process we will engage in reflection (so what?) Both students and teachers at Tahunanui School are using this powerful concept of teaching and learning.

Reading The most important part of reading is understanding what the author is telling us. Visualisation, prior knowledge, asking questions, forming a hypothesis and making connections are all techniques to help students understand what they read. A student reads text and then may say: “I have a picture in my head of …” (Visualisation) “I know that because ……” (Knowledge ) “I wonder why …..” (Questions) “Maybe it’s because ……” (Hypothesis) “It’s like …….” (Connections)

Although a student may be able to decode words at a high level, the actual comprehension of text is extremely important. - Literacy Leader

HEALTHY SMILE - HEALTHY CHILD Did you know? - The Nelson/Marlborough water supply is not fluoridated. Fluoride toothpaste helps to strengthen our teeth and reduce early decay. A number of toothpastes marketed for children do not contain sufficient levels of fluoride to do that. The whole family should use the same adult strength fluoride toothpaste right from when a baby’s first tooth appears. - Community Oral Health Service

MARGARET TO THE RESCUE

Last week at lunchtime I got stuck in the toilet because the lock was broken, so my friends told the teacher, then Margaret came. Then she climbed over the toilet and she jammed the door open. When I came out a lot of people were watching. I was really brave. - Sally Room 5

FREEZING COLD

It was freezing cold outside one morning last week. This jacket was frozen solid because it was left out overnight. Can you see the icicles glistening? - Jake Room 5

THANK YOU

Drum Kit - Our school now has its very own drum kit. This was generously donated by Barbara and

Helen Bailey. Thanks so much from everyone at Tahunanui School. Apples - Thank you to ENZA for the donation of apples.
