Helpful Hints in Developing School Counselor Workshops
Research the audience you want to reach (i.e. schools in your area). Be clear on what you hope to convey and why you are doing the workshop. Develop a promotional flyer and send to prospective counselors. Follow up with phone
calls. Set an agenda that includes:
o Opening remarks from the president of your college or academic dean; o Overview of manufacturing as an industry (ideally using the COT-RCNGM DVD
overview); o Information on the COT-Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing and
your relationship with the organization; o Discussions/talks from local manufacturers (2-3) who can talk about their company,
the industry, and their career path. Ideally, try to include a young person who may have gone through a community college program;
o Show the COT-RCNGM manufacturing DVD profile video segments; o Talk about your programs and what your school has to offer; o Invite an admissions person who can give them information on the application
process; o Include a tour of the manufacturing area and a demonstration if possible, and other
areas of your school.
