DAWN SERVICE -WASN’T THE WEATHER OUTSTANDING?

SCHOOL CHILDREN’S ANZAC SERVICEFor the first time since its inception the Annual Anzac School’s Program was fully conducted by the Box Hill Sub-Branch. Due to unknown circumstances the Box Hill Central Rotary Club couldn’t continue with this most important schools project.

With the weather for an autumn day it was extremely kind, with bright sunshine and a slightly warm northerly breeze. The event was attended by eighteen local primary and secondary schools and with more than 900 students in attendance, their behaviour

was exemplary. Along with the students we had another thirty dignitaries including both State and Federal politicians, local councillors and a smattering of our members.

The Master of Ceremonies was our great friend from across the road, Bram Cassidy, a Major from the Salvation Army and as a “first-timer” he performed his role with verve. The guest speaker was Squadron Leader Adam Lawson a RAAF Senior Reservist Officer and having performed this task previously he spoke to the students not the dignitaries.

In closing, we need to thank our member Sgt Lindsay Burke who organised the cadets from the 305 Army Cadet Unit who performed as our catafalque party and found a bugler for the occasion. We would also like to thank the volunteers who assisted on the day including Judy Coats who organised the event, Paul Aitkenhead, Neil Brown, Gary Hutchinson, Geoff Smith, Ingrid and David Nelson, Cheryl Frail, Joan Waters and Arthur Merryweather.

LEGACY LADIESAttendances at our meetings remain in the low 30s which is good, as I know many of you are unable to come to our meetings now.

We have some interesting speakers this year. Shane McSweeney, our April speaker was most interesting. He brought along various items that help us to live alone without having accidents, eg floor mats for the bathroom and /or kitchen which DO NOT MOVE or curl up and other devices to open bottles and jars.He also spoke about Nordic Walking (see the April issue of "The Answer" for photos etc).

On May 11th we have a trip to a winery in the Yarra Valley, organised by the Outer Eastern Legatees.

Bettina Pollard will lay a wreath at the Anzac Day Dawn Service on behalf of the Legacy ladies.

ANZAC APPEALWhile the results haven’t been finalised, as of today (Wednesday 27th April) we have collected around $57,000.

And on behalf of the Sub-Branch I should like to thank all who donated their hard-earned dollars and the unstinting efforts of our fine collectors. A final report will be published in the next issue of Scuttlebutt.

After a short general meeting to dispense with club business we were entertained by Baz Baker who sang Rock 'n Roll and Country Western to operetta with gusto including songs from all the old greats such as Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Elvis and Dean Martin. He had some members up line-dancing and others playing musical instruments. Great audience participation! Baz is a multi-talented performer and his jokes were very entertaining. His show was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

This was a special meeting as we were able to wish Tom O'Neill a happy birthday for his 100th birthday. Bob McLellan said a few words on behalf of our club, and presented Tom with a card and a gift. What a grand effort Tom. With Anzac Day approaching the poem of the Unknown Soldier by Mirella Webb was read as an Anzac Day Tribute. This is a great poem and always brings a tear to the eye. Our quest speaker was Anne Cathpole who spoke about the organisation 'Cottage by the Sea' at Queenscliff. The purpose of the Cottage is to provide short term care within a holiday environment for disadvantaged children. Children impacted by sickness, war, fire, famine, flood or finance have been cared for by the dedicated staff at the Cottage for over one hundred years. Cottage by the Sea is a not-for-profit, self-funded children's charity that receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generous support of the community. All donations go directly to the Cottage as there are no

administration costs or salaries. Today the Cottage runs two programs -the REEF program and the Mentor program. Children are referred by their schools or by their doctors. The current patron is Frank Costa.

What a fantastic organisation and how wonderful it is that programs like this are available for children in need.

BOX HILL RSL LUNCH FOR WW2, BCOF & KOREAN VETERANSWe held a lunch to honour Veteran Members who served in WW2, BCOF & Korea in early April. Seventy Service Members attended. With the assistance of Member Lindsay Burke, we were able to invite a number of current serving soldiers from 5/6 RVR. Committee members also participated. The young bugler Bradley Todd played the Last Post and Reveille and the veterans were officially welcomed by Tony Bowden. Regardless of the average age being 93 the conversations were lively with lots of battle stories from military events over the last seventy five years being shared. This, along with the high standard of meals, the good cheer and the lively conversations ensured the event was a great success.

Many thanks must go to Kevin Kosier who provided the musical entertainment and the kitchen and catering staff for excellent service.

Whereas last year’s commemoration went without a hitch, the same couldn’t be said about this year. At the commencement of the wreath laying ceremony I was partnered with the Mayor of Whitehorse and with the Mayor not in attendance I wasn’t proceeding on my own – new arrangement were quickly made and this important part of the service continued without a hitch.

Another surprise, half way through the service the main garden lighting was turned off – it certainly surprised the crowd and being a bit cheeky I made the aside, the Mayor had probably known it was about to happen. Unbeknown to me the Mayor was in the crowd, he had just turned up late.

The remainder of the service proceeded without further problems. Later, when speaking to a few of the participants they remarked that the service had a lot more meaning when the lights were off.

With the service complete, a vast majority of the participants adjourned into the Sub-Branch for a breakfast of hot foods.

One of the differences this year from last year – everyone headed into the car-park where the various hot foods were on offer. There was an array of foods, hot soup, bacon and egg rolls, sausages in a roll, soft drinks for the children (of which there were many) plus the monstrous rum and coffee.

In conclusion I would like to thank the following groups for their volunteering with the running of our Dawn Service. Without them the service wouldn’t have been the success it was.

WHAT A MARVELLOUS COFFEE BREAK!This is an amazing story of two female Box Hill RSL members who are accomplished bowlers and have played bowls for many years, often as the Lead for their respective teams. In that time they have also been at the forefront of setting up and running the social events for the Bowls section.

Together they are always among the first within the Bowls section to put up their hands when volunteers are called for to sell poppies and badges for Remembrance Day and Anzac Day. Both Cheryls can also be seen at the Anzac Dawn Service serving the food to the hungry multitudes. As a passionate gardener Cheryl Ryan has been involved in the Welfare herb garden and the surrounding gardens.

Cheryl Frail can often be found in the Welfare Office assisting our Welfare coordinators, Faye and Kathy, in caring for our members.

Cheryl Ryan was named as “Box Hill RSL Volunteer of the Year” for 2013 and Cheryl Frail was named “Box Hill RSL Volunteer of the Year” for 2015.

They share a great friendship and work extremely well together.

To avoid confusion in the Club, Cheryl Frail goes by the name of Chez - first coined when she was President of the Bowls Ladies section and named – “Chez the Pres” – by Cheryl Ryan.

One day recently they met for a coffee break – as they often do - and Cheryl mentioned to Chez that she has been researching her family tree for some time. She has also been attending sessions conducted by the Box Hill RSL Genealogy Group and recently traced her family tree back to the gold rush days in Ballarat. Cheryl had also discovered a

book entitled “The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka” which won the Stella Prize in 2014. The book described the life and times of her Great Great Grandmother - Elizabeth Rowlands – amongst others – and how she stood tall in the rough environment of the gold fields.

Elizabeth Rowlands participated in making the Eureka flag, she was the first female to obtain a Gold Prospectors’ Licence and in many ways cared for families and other women on the gold fields of Ballarat.

Cheryl talked to Chez about her discoveries and when she mentioned the name of Elizabeth Rowlands, Chez nearly dropped her cup because it was only recently that her uncle

had given her some history of her family and that her Great Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Rowlands!

Cheryl and Chez discovered that day they had the same Great Great Grandmother and their Great Grandmothers were sisters!

It is extraordinary that our two Cheryls should independently join the same Box Hill RSL, participate in the same game of bowls, join together as a great team in running social functions, receive the

same recognition for volunteer work at Box Hill RSL and now discover that they are 3rd cousins!

Just imagine the two of them now sharing the riches of their discovery and the new richer meaning of their relationship – all because of a chance mention of a family tree over a cup of coffee!!

BUS TRIP TO POINT COOK On Tuesday 5th April the Welfare Department organised an outing to the Air Museum at Point Cook. In my absence, our trip co-ordinator Bob McLellan made sure the day was a great success. His report is as follows:

‘On this beautiful April morning we are heading off to our first location – The Pt. Cook Aircraft Museum. What a ‘jewel in the crown’ of our military history of aircraft is this, with a collection ranging from Gypsy Moths to Spitfire Fighters to Sabre jets to F111’s and all beautifully restored. Our group was very fortunate to have a very informative guide David. The tour then moved onto the Werribee RSL where we were fed and watered, thanks to an excellent staff. After lunch, we headed off again - to the B24 Hangar where a magnificent specimen of the B24 Liberator is being restored. This project is governed by donations and it appears it will be a very long project.

May I say many thanks to our very safe and obliging coach driver for looking after us.

Well that is about all for now.

‘Till next trip, Bob McLellan.’

ANZAC DAY 2-UP

The ANZAC Day 2-Up under the control of Chris Elms and Kevin Chandler went until one Spinner lobbed the coins in such a wayward manner that one lodged in the pelmet overhead. At that time I decided all had had enough in more ways than one and I wound the game up for another year.

Trevor Symes, Vice President

Our Edinburgh Shield this year was held at Corowa. Two teams represented the Box Hill R.S.L. with reasonable results. All players enjoyed their 2 days of bowls and participated well. The weather was great and after a long day of bowls, we enjoyed the final balmy evening get together relaxing, having a few laughs and enjoying a great B.B.Q. with a couple of quiet well deserved bevvies. Here’s to another successful trip, thanks to the Organizers and the Box Hill R.S.L. Sub Branch Committee.

Our President’s Presentation day was held on Sat 16th April. The nasty weather held off so all could enjoy 12 ends of bowls before a delicious Spit Roast Lunch, The bowl nearest the Spider was won by Heather Arnel and the closest bowl to the ditch was won by Rene Rhode. We did not have a resting toucher - close but not close enough! Flowers were presented to Julie-Ann Byron who represented our Sponsors, Bendigo Bank and Alise Hanson from the Eastern Ranges.

Our Bowls A.G.M. was held Sunday the 17th April and our President Barry Maddock after a reign of 2 years vacated the chair. He was replaced by yours truly, Helen Harrington who

has big shoes to fill. Thanks Barry for all your support and for a job well done. I look forward to the challenges that lay ahead in the next twelve months.

A big thank you also goes to all outgoing and incoming Committee members.

Regards,

Helen Harrington, President

FREE MOVIE FOR MEMBERS

"The Perfect Game"THURSDAY, MAY 26TH 2016 AT 10.30 Presented by Ray WallThis movie is a based on the true story of a baseball team from Monterey Mexico that came to the USA to play in the Little League tournament. The movie is set in 1957 when prejudice was healthy in America. These boys were

underdogs in every sense of the definition: they were poor, smaller and foreign. This is a powerful and beautiful movie about the power of the children's love for the game and their desire to overcome obstacles.

THE REPAT HOSPITAL AND “FROMELLES”On Remembrance Day this year as a special tribute to those who lost their lives 100 years ago in 1916, the Repat Hospital in Heidelberg will unveil a special ceramic sculpture which is now being created by Susan Deprost who was commissioned to carry out these works in the Memorial garden.

The ceramic sculpture will show images of the battle and the “Cobbers” statue by Peter Corllet. Susan was seeking a metal piece of the Rising Sun Emblem, and was referred to Box Hill RSL by Anzac House to see if we had one. I spoke with Susan and advised her that I had one in the Memorabilia collection which she could use. When she arrived at the RSL she was really taken back with not only the weight of the article but its condition and size, the above photo shows me presenting the Badge to her. I am proud that BHRSL will have some connection in this important sculpture, as many of our members, being ex-service personal, at some time have been involved with the Repat.

For many of our Vietnam Veterans, this hospital was the first port of call when they arrived home either wounded or injured. Many still visit the Repat, the Austin as it is now known. We all look forward at seeing the finished article, where we will be guests at the opening.

Hello Ladies

Forty eight people attended our March meeting - not a big quantity but real quality. Our speaker was our very own Wendy Doolan who, not being a public speaker, was very nervous. Fear not Wendy, you did a great job.

Wendy spoke of her father’s experiences in World War 2 and her own experience of find this information. When Wendy was three, her mother remarried and the war was never spoken of. Wendy has been able to find out some amazing things about her father who was part of the ill-fated Gull force sent to Ambon, Indonesia in December 1941. He came under Japanese attack on the 1st February 1942, where his battalion took a stand at the small island town of Kudamati and held off many Japanese’s soldiers. He was hiding high up in a Gandarra tree, but was eventually found and subsequently killed on day two of the fighting. The rest of his battalion surrendered and for the next four years survived appalling conditions at the hands of the Japanese. Of the 1131 men of Ambon, just 352 returned home alive. Wendy’s father was buried by the Ambonese on the spot where he was killed and his grave became a shrine which was never without fresh flowers. In 1981 Wendy joined a pilgrimage to Ambon. This would have been quite a culture shock had she not lived in Papua New Guinea for 6 years. His bravery has been mentioned in many books. There are so many other things Wendy has discovered about her father for which she can be so proud.

Our trip to Geelong had to be cancelled due a lack of support and money was refunded. It was a pity for those planning to go.

Well ladies I hope all the not-so-well will be back with us soon and our special thoughts go to Betty Geek.

Remember – “You don’t stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing”. So for now keep smiling.

Joan Clarke, Honorary President
