I think I started watching my weather forecast app the week before Ag Day. I’m not
sure why I bothered, it changed each time I looked, and we all accept that a day in
Auckland can contain every season anyway. And I do know that what will be will be...
But… still I did, even making the effort to turn on the TV to see what TV3 weather
experts had to say about it in the lead up. And the reason is because a lot of people
put in a lot of effort into making the day a great one and we know that weather really
impacts on how it all runs. All this effort is to make sure Ag Day is a recognition of our
rural environment, honours past traditions, opens up our doors in order to share our
fantastic school, is a real celebration of our children, and an opportunity to enjoy our
time together as a community.
As the rain started to fall just as our kapa haka group, Te Kotahitanga o Kaukapakapa,
came out to open the day, the signs were ominous. The wind and rain were literally
lashing the food tents, the poor animal competitors, judges and stewards already
drenched, the bouncy castle became a water slide, and a lot of people were looking
less than impressed under the shade. And then our head student and one of our
senior kapa haka leaders, Guinevere Leslie called out to begin the performance, we
were all drawn in as the group’s voices filled the space. If we had been on the court
as planned it just wouldn’t have been the same. Boy they were good! If you are free on
Friday, they will be performing at the Kaipara Festival (held at Kaipara College) at
12.30pm and will be in their full (new) uniform.
And then the sun came out! The most overwhelming feedback I had (as I carefully
watched who put money into my Pie in the Face jar) was about the lovely ‘feel’ the day
had. This isn’t something we can measure, something we can put on a check list to
happen next year, but given a part of our ‘Communication’ strategic plan is to have an
engaged community I think we can tick Ag Day 2019 off as a positive indication of how
well we are achieving this goal.
We do want to keep getting better, and part of this is listening. Here are some of what our most important
voices had to say about the day…
What we liked:
No booklets (most common feedback)
Candy floss (next most common feedback!)
Different options for the teams
Certificates
Just choosing one thing for the class and one thing for the library
Doing all the activities in our classrooms this week
Pie in the Face
Bouncy castles
Harakeke
Slushies
The library looked cool
What we would like to see for next year:
Two teachers getting a pie in the face (hmmmm also a very popular piece of feedback!)
Something else for the seniors like a climbing wall
Models
Pets
More games
More food, the queues were long
What would you like me to know? Please email me directly with your thoughts and ideas so we can put it into
the mix for 2020. [email protected] Already I have:
Great to know the activities before the school holiday
All the information we needed was in the booklet
Classrooms open for just a bit longer
Chicken judging to be shortened
Bring back the beef sliders!
Loved the Christmas themed Room 13
Great to have all the seating options out
Neat to be able to look through all of the classrooms
Flash new signs on the roads
Thank you to the many people who contributed to such a successful day. We do see and appreciate the hours
of your time that went into its organisation. As always, it is a small group of committed people that give back
because they can, and want to. You are the meaning of community. Please continue to support the
businesses that gave raffles, manned the food stalls, donated products and sponsored
the day.
Images of our fantastic day are now on our website page.

Ag day this year marks the 46th Anniversary of National
Ag Day!
Groups of excited children are rushing off to examine the
stalls.
Running adults are trying to catch up to their children.
In the classes families look at all the activities the kids
have done in class.
Crammed stalls are all selling out quick with the rush of
people.
Unique crafts hang around all the rooms in the school.
Little children run around trying to find their parents.
Tired families resting to watch the kapa haka
performance.
Unusual creations stand in the decorate cake or cupcake
stand.
Refreshments in the stalls are all gone with the big
crowd.
Animals are still competing to win first prize in their
contest.
Lamb judging finish and the children go collect them.
Delighted children are still buying things at the stalls.
All the raffles have been given out to all of the winners.
Young children are being taken home and all the families
were happy how the day went.

Room 5 Ag Day 2019
Mice, that’s right. We decided to celebrate the iconic rodent who has remained the most well known
pest in the world, Mickey Mouse. To create these cartoons we followed directions from a YouTube
cartoonist and together we all created a Mickey Mouse. First we used sketching pencils and drafted
our first drawings. Then we used metallic gold, yellow and red paint to add Mickey’s
colourings. Finally, we observed Ms J carefully apply the black Indian ink. This gave
the paintings a smooth professional looking finish. Here are some of our finished
cartoon drawings.
One preparation we completed before the schools annual Ag Day was to create a painting that showed what we saw as a
clean New Zealand. A requirement was also to add some Maori design somewhere on our art. We ruled our page into three
and designed a painting of nature. First thirds was hills and sky, the second the sea and the third was also the sea but
with a creature (such as a whale or taniwha). We changed the colour to express the different depth of the sea.

Get your Postman Pat hats on! It’s time to start planning this year’s Local Phone Book Deliveries! This fundraiser earns our school over $4000 every year! Thank you to all those families who have participated in phone book deliveries over the years, many of these families have now moved on so we need your help to get the job done! This year we have 27 runs to deliver, each run only takes an hour or two to complete which you can do anytime between the delivery dates of Friday November 22nd and Sunday 1st December. We would love to have enough families on board so each family only has to complete one run! And to say thanks for your time, you will go into the draw to win a Gull Petrol voucher and a Shark ‘n Tatties voucher!! Please contact Louise Banks if you are able to help with a run this year: 021 333 506 or [email protected]

Kaukapakapa Tamariki Rise to the Challenge
On Wednesday the 16th and Thursday 17th October 3 teams of students from Kaukapakapa School competed against several local schools in the Vector EPro8 Challenge.
Year 7 and 8 team: Russell, Theo, Libby and Luke
Year 6 team: Caleb, Quinn, Denny and Eli Cunliffe
Year 5 team: Joshua, Lenny, Ruby and Ryan
The teams represented our school in an educational experience that was both challenging and exciting. The EPro8 Challenge is an engineering and problem solving race! Every year over 10,000 students from 900 schools from throughout New Zealand take part.
Teams compete to build large sized structures, solve practical problems, engineer using pulleys, motors, gears, wheels and axles. They get to invent machines that can complete simple tasks and undertake unusual and fun experiments, as well as construct basic electronic circuits and solve interesting problems using practical maths.
Each team of four was based at a workstation containing an impressive assortment of easy to use parts and equipment. The 3 hour event began with a tutorial on the equipment teams would be using. All our students proved themselves up to the task with the 7 & 8 team placing 3rd and therefore advancing to the semi finals to be held in November.
Awesome job!
