Clayesmoreoffersavarietyofscholarshipsforentryeachyearcoveringarangeofdifferentaptitudesandinterests.Theseinclude:Academic,Music,Sport,Drama,Design&Technology,ArtandAll-Rounder.

ThecriteriaforthesedifferentawardsarelaidoutinthisbookletandtheyallinvolvedifferenttypesofassessmentandinterviewsthatareundertakenattheschoolduringtheSpringTerm.

Inallscholarshipareas,wearelookingforpupilswhoarealreadystrongachieversbutweareparticularlykeentomeetyoung

peoplewiththepotentialtodevelopfurtherandmorefullyintheirscholarshiparea.

ParentsaremostwelcometodiscussscholarshipopportunitieswiththeRegistrarorwiththeHeadandinalmostallcasesavisittotheschoolwouldbethebestwayforward.

expeCtations

SeniorSchoolScholarships(Year9entry)aredesignedtoencouragetheirrecipientsandtorecognisethattheyhaveachievedacertainlevelofexcellencebytheageof13+.Weexpectscholarstobeenthusiasticintheirscholarshipareaandtocontinuetowanttoburgeonforwardsin,andcontributeto,thisaspectofschoollifeinacommittedfashion.Weexpectscholarstobeself-disciplinedaboutdevelopingtheirpotentialandtotakepartinappropriateextra-curricularandenrichmenteventsandtohelpwiththementoringofothermembersoftheschoolwithinthescholarshipdepartment.Itwouldbeappropriatethatacademicscholarsjoininandleadindepartmentalspecialistinterestgroups,maintainareadinglist,participateinsuchactivitiesasModelUnitedNations,andsoon.Musicscholarswillallbemembersofthechoirandofotherappropriategroupsandensemblesandbecarefultosettimeasideforpractice.SportsscholarswillkeepuptheirownphysicalfitnessandparticipateinasmuchoftheSportsDevelopmentGroupactivitiesastheyareable,andbeenthusiasticsportsteammemberswhoremaincoachableandkeentodeveloptheirskills.

Candidatesforthenon-academicscholarshipsmustbeofatleastaverageCgradestandardacrosstheboardatCommonEntrance,whereappropriate.Forcandidatesnottaking

ScholarshipsatthePrepSchoolare,likethoseattheSeniorSchool,designedtoencouragechildrenwhodemonstrateabilityandenthusiasmacademicallyorintheirchosenscholarshipareaandareforthosewhomightaspiretothelevelsofachievement,activityandinterestthatareoutlinedaboveforSeniorSchoolscholars.

FinanCe

Clayesmorescholarshipsrangeinvaluefrom2.5%ofthefeeupto10%ofthefeeandthisremissionmaybeincreasedthroughasimultaneousbursaryapplicationifitwouldotherwisebe

impossibleforascholartocometoClayesmore.Thebursary,butnotthescholarship,maybereviewedonaregularbasis.

appLiCation

ItisnormallythecasethatwecanonlyawardscholarshipstothosepupilswhohavealreadybeenregisteredtoenterClayesmore.Lateapplicationsarewelcomebutwedonotholdplacesinreserveforscholarshipapplicantsanditisthereforedesirablethatanearlyapplicationismade.

Inallcases,wewouldbeonlytoopleasedtomeetpotentialapplicantsandtheirparentstodiscusstheprocesswiththeHeadorHeadofPrepandotherappropriatestaff.

Clayesmoreenjoysarichandvariedprogrammeofsportthroughouttheyear,andgeographically,wearewellplacedformatchesandcompetitionswithallourneighbouringschools.Theschoolislocatedina62acreparklandsettingwhereallourgamespitchesandcourtsarelocated.Theseincludeastate-of-theartfloodlitartificialgrasssurfaceforhockeyandtennisandagoodnumberofother‘hard’surfacesfornetballandtennis.TheSportsCentreincludesafine25mindoorpoolandspecialistswimcoachingisavailable.OtherfacilitiesattheSportsCentreincludealargehallsuitableformanyindoorsportsandcoaching,squashcourts,anuppergymnasiumandafitnesscentre.

Pupils’sportingexperienceattheschoolisenhancedthroughmembershipoftheSportsDevelopmentGroup,whichoffersspecialistfitnessandconditionstoallClayesmoresportsenthusiasts.WeseethisasanessentialaspectofourSportsScholarsdevelopmentwhiletheyareattheschool.

Candidatesmustofferatleasttwoinstruments(whichmayincludevoice)andaremostwelcometoofferthreeoptions.Fortheaudition,twopiecesshouldbepreparedonthefirstinstrumentandoneonsubsequentinstruments/voice.Clayesmorewillprovideanaccompanist,ifrequired,butcandidatesarepermittedtobringtheirownaccompanistiftheywish.Totalperformancetimeshouldnotexceed15minutes.Regardlessofwhethervoiceisofferedasan‘instrument’,singingasongisencouragedthoughisnotcompulsory.Sight-readingandauraltestsappropriatetothegradelevelofthecandidate’sfirstinstrumentwillbegiven.ThestandardofperformanceonthefirstinstrumentshouldbenotlessthanthatofGrade5oftheAssociatedBoardofMusic,theRoyalSchoolsofMusicorTrinityGuildhall.

CHoRaL awaRDs

Candidateswhooffersingingasafirststudyshouldnormallyofferanadditionalsecondinstrument.Candidatesshouldpreparetwosongsofcontrastingcharacter(i.e.onesecular,onesacred)andonepieceontheirsecondinstrument.Exceptionally,a(limited)choralawardmaybemadetoaboyorgirlwithastrongtraditionalsingingbackgroundwhowillcontributetothechorallifeoftheschoolbutwhodoesnothaveasecondinstrument.Totalperformancetimeshouldnotexceed15minutes.Sightreadingandauraltestsappropriatetothesinginggradelevelofthecandidatewillbegiven.

musiC at CLayesmoRe

Theattractiveandwell-equippedMusicSchoolislocatedcentrallyonthecampus.Itcomprisesalargerehearsalroom,anumberofteachingandpracticerooms,awell-equippedclassroom,apercussionroomandmusictechnologyroomwithcomputerfacilities.Goodqualitypianosareinabundanceandthechapelhousesasubstantial4-manualorgan.ThemusicdiaryatClayesmoreisveryfull.Concertsarefrequentlygivenbothonandofftheschoolgrounds,manyasfundraisersorcharityevents.Apartfromtheregularensemblesofchoir,chamberorchestraandconcertband,

otherensemblesincludebrassensemble,jazzorchestra,stringorchestra,stringquartet,pipeband,flutegroup,closeharmonygroup,andavarietyofotherensemblesarrangedasandwhennecessary.Regularoverseastourshaveprovedverypopularwiththepupils.Frequenttripstoprofessionalconcertsareundertakenandthereisaprofessionalrecitalseriesheldattheschool.Inadditiontoagoodnumberofperipateticinstrumentalandsingingteachers,therearethreefulltimemusicteachersinthedepartment,includingtheDirectorofMusic,MrRalphKerr,MA(Oxon).Alltheusualorchestralinstrumentsaretaughtalongwithorgan,classicalguitarandelectricguitar,drumkit,piano,recorder,bagpipesandsinging.AgoodnumberofpupilstakepracticalandtheoryexaminationseachtermwiththeABRSM,TrinityGuildhallandRockSchool.

MusicistaughtasanacademicsubjectatA-levelandGCSE,whilstaBTECisalsoofferedinMusicTechnology.

Clayesmore’sMusicScholarsplayanimportantpartintheculturallifeoftheschool.Theyareexpectedtocontinuewithourspecialiststaffinthestudyoftheirchoseninstrumentstoahighstandard;toperformregularly,bothinandoutsidetheschool;toplayaleadingroleintheschool’smusicgroupsandensemblesandthroughadministrativeandorganisationalduties(e.g.OrchestraLeader,Librarianetc.),andtomakeasubstantialcontributiontotherunningoftheMusicSchool.MusicScholarsareencouragedtotakeMusicasanacademicsubjectatleasttoGCSE.

AllMusicScholarshipapplicantsarestronglyencouragedtoattendtheschoolforatrialscholarshipauditionwiththeDirectorofMusicatleastatermbeforetherealauditions.

Design & teCHnoLogy sCHoLaRsHips

Thoseapplyingforthisawardshouldbeabletodemonstrateaboveaverageskillandenthusiasmintheareaofcreativeproblemsolvingandthephysicalmanufactureofhighqualityproductsintheworkshops.Ideallythecandidatewillalsohavereasonabledrawingskillsandtakeprideinthepresentationoftheirwork.

DRama sCHoLaRsHips

Candidatesareexpectedtohavereachedahighstandardinatleastonetheatricaldiscipline:

Actorswillusuallyhavetakenamajorroleinatleastoneschoolproductionandmaywellhaveagooddealofadditionalexperience,eitheratschoolorforanothercompany,amateurorprofessional.Designerswillhavedesignedasetoranumberofcostumesforaproduction,eitheratschoolorforanothercompany.Itislikelytheywillalsohaveparticipatedinthemanufactureofthesetorcostumes.Theyshouldhaveaportfolioofdrawingsandphotographsdocumentingtheprocess.Technicianswillhaveexperienceinhelpingtopreparealightingorsoundplotandmayhaveaportfolioofdiagramsandcuesheets.Theymayhavesomeexamplesofsoundrecordingstheyhaveedited.

RecipientsoftheawardswillbeexpectedtocontributestronglytothedramaticlifeoftheschoolthroughouttheirtimeatClayesmore.

range.DramaisofferedatGCSEandBTECPerformingArtsandProductionArtsareoptionsintheSixthForm.ThereareregularvisitstoothertheatreslocallyandLondon.SeveralClayesmoriansinrecentyearshaveenteredtheworldofTheatreorembarkeduponDramacoursesonleavingschool.

Candidateswillbeexpectedtodemonstrateaseriouscommitmenttocreativeactivitiesinageneralsense,whileshowingparticularinterestinaspecificareaoftwoorthreedimensionalactivity.Whileawell-developedrangeofdrawingskillsisdesirable,atooprecociousabilityinthisareacanbealimitationatthisage.Therefore,anintelligententhusiasm,coupledwithanexcitementinthecreativeprocessesgenerally,willbelookedforinexamplesofworkandatinterview.

Theawardwillbemadetothecandidatewhoismostsuccessfulintheassessmentprocedure.Therearetwocomponents:

interviewCandidatesshouldbring:• apersonaldrawingbookcontaininglinkedimagesandideas,

firsthanddrawings,scrapbookitems,notesandjottingsetc.Thisismostimportantandshouldconveytheimpressionofapersonwhothinksvisuallyandenjoysdrawing.

• Aportfolioofselectedpaintingsanddrawingsand/orworkinthreedimensionsshouldalsobeproducedforassessment.Morethanarepresentativeselectionofworkwillnotberequired.Atleasttwodifferenttopicsshouldberepresented.Thecandidatewillbeexpectedtodiscusshisorherworkattheinterview.

Practical��Apracticalassessmentwillbeheldduringtheday.Theobjectivestudy,astudyinany2Dmedium,recording

information,andbasedondirectobservationwillbedoneonthedayoftheinterview.

tHe aRt DepaRtment

Clayesmore’sArtDepartmentissitedashortdistanceoffcampusinabeautifulEdwardianbuilding,whichwasredevelopedasapurposedesignedfacilityin1997.

Thedepartmentoffersexcellentfacilitiesincludingalibraryandcentralresourcesarea,adrawingandprintmakingstudio,ceramicsandsculpturestudios,andaSixthFormstudio.Visitstolocalandmajorgalleriesinthiscountryandabroadareorganisedonaregularbasis,asarelecturesandseminarsbypractisingartistsanddesigners.Exhibitionsofprofessionalartists’work,aswellastheworkofpupils,areorganisedoncampusonanannualbasisaspartofthedepartment’scommitmenttotheculturallifeoftheSchool.Theproductionoflarge-scaleworkfortheatrepresentationsandfestivals,eitherinagrouporonanindividualbasis,arealsoseenaspartofthedepartment’sopenresponsibility.

aLL-RounDeR sCHoLaRsHips

Thistypeofscholarshipisforgenuineall-rounderswhoarelikelytomakeastrongcontributiontoClayesmorelifeinabroadwaybutwhoarenotnecessarilyquiteuptothestandardofthescholarshipsinalltheseparatedisciplines.

Candidatesareexpectedtodisplayagoodstandardofacademicattainment,aswellasabilityandpromiseinsport,wherecandidatesshouldbeof‘A’teamstandardinatleastonemajorgameandbeastrongparticipantinatleastonefurtherareaofschoollife.Itisanticipatedthatthesewillbe

ThestandardofperformanceonthefirstinstrumentshouldnotbelessthanthatofGrade6oftheAssociatedBoardorotherrecognisedmusicconservatoires.

Auditionswillbefollowedbyashortinterviewduringwhichthecandidate’smotivationandinterestinmusicwillbeassessed.Itshouldbestressedthatmusicalpotentialisasimportantafactorinthisassessmentasinstrumentalorvocalprowess.

AMusicScholarmustexpecttoplayafullpartinthemusicallifeoftheschoolbeingreadytoperformsolosandtobeamemberofanyappropriateensembles,includingchoir.WewouldhopethatanySixthFormMusicScholarswouldtakeMusicAlevel.
