The benefits of being an Amity scholar

‘Inspiring excellence’ is one of the four founding values of our community at Amity; beyond the classroom, one of the ways we try to foster excellence is through our Scholarship Programme which, through a series of talks, workshops, trips and coaching opportunities, fuels our students’ curiosity, creativity and aspiration.

It is a flourishing project, with 34 students aged 10-14 currently holding Academic, Art, Sports and Performing Arts Scholarships.

Students awarded Scholarships receive the following benefits:

Exclusive, ‘invitation-only’ access to a programme of talks, workshops and trips Bespoke courses to develop skills (sourced from outside providers, including EtonX) Support developing a portfolio of skills and achievement An Inauguration Ceremony All scholars’ awards are displayed on the Scholarship Honours Board Regular review and target-setting meetings with the Director of Scholarship to drive progress

Please note that the Scholarship Award is not a financial award; being awarded a Scholarship does not automatically result in fee reduction.

PERFORMING ARTSSCHOLARSHIPS

Performing Arts Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate potential in the field(s) of Music, Drama and Dance.

Applicants for a Performing Arts Scholarship may show talent in one or more of these fields; they will be assessed accordingly.

If an applicant excels in one field – for example, Music, he or she will be assessed in this one field. If successful, he or she would be awarded a Perfor-ming Arts Scholarship to include a programme focusing primarily on Music development.

Alternatively, a student who excels in Drama and shows potential in Dance will undertake assessments in both fields. If successful, the student would be awarded a Performing Arts Scholarship and their skills in both fields would be cultivated as part of their programme.

Pupils apply for a Scholarship to start the following academic year. If, for example, the student is in Year 6 he or she may apply for a Year 7 scholarship.

Only students from Year 5 to Year 10 can apply for the Performing Arts Scholarship.

The Department is well-resourced & facilities are excellent:

• A purpose-built, acoustically-engineered suite, backed on to a 540 seat auditorium

• Two large classrooms, equipped with Yamaha keyboards, a range of percussion, recorders, orchestral xylophones, classroom xylophones, ukuleles, and a Yamaha digital piano

• A third teaching room equipped with 17 Apple Mac Machines running Sibelius and GarageBand software for composition modules

• A fourth teaching room for Secondary music: ‘the live room’, with acoustic drum kits, electric drum kits, electric guitars, bass guitars, acoustic guitars, violins, a viola, a cello and amplification. This is a large ensemble space and utilised as a practice room

• There are 3 student practice rooms with an acoustic piano and/or keyboard, acoustic or electric drum kit.

There are exciting opportunities for Performing Arts Scholars to play a leading role in this vital aspect of the life of the school. Scholars will perform in a series of formal and informal concerts, both as members of musical groups and as soloists. Scholars are expected to practise regularly, participate in appropriate groups and ensembles and attend rehearsals. All applicants are encouraged to offer singing in addition to their instrumental performances.
