KUAY. Mary Evelyn (Stewart) Polley ’39, died January 14, 2018, age 96. Her daughter, Cladeen Clanton, sends us word from Norfolk, VA, where she has been caring for Mary E. for the past 15 years. Mary loved Queen Anne High School and talked about it and her friends often.

1950s: Larry Turner ’55 sends word of the death of his sister, Diane (Turner) Obermayr ’54, who died last year. Larry

graduated from Stanford in 1961, celebrated his 51st wedding anniversary in 2017, and has spent most of his career supporting data processing installations in school districts. He retired in San Jose and moved to the Sacramento area, where he has taken up oil painting. He writes that he enjoys the KUAY newsletter.

1960s: Carol (Peterson) Keaton ’60, died last year, July 20, 2017. She had a brilliant career, both in college, as Majorette for the UW Marching Band, performing at two Rose Parades, and eventually working at the Kingdome, where she would receive fame as “Kingdome Keaton.” She served as Promotions & Media Relations Manager, Public

Her honors include winning the state championship in baton twirling as a high school freshman; winning the title of Miss Queen Anne in 1960 and becoming a Seafair Princess; in 1999, receiving the Royal Brougham Lifetime Achievement Award at the King County Event Producers Awards Ceremony; and in 2006, she became the second woman

JOHN LOACKER ’73 AND THE KROLL MAP COMPANYBy Kim R, Turner ’61

It is modestly located on the northwest corner of Third Avenue and Cedar Street in the outskirts of Belltown. One of the last one-story buildings in the area, but the heart of city maps created and added to by three generations plus, and the merger of Kroll and Metsker Maps into one agency which can provide maps of the city, county and region.

now 106 years since it began.

The current location was acquired in 1975 and looks to be continuing for at least one more generation, due to John Loacker’s ’73 stewardship. John worked from his youth steadily

both updated maps and copies of many of the earlier maps showing the growth and development of Seattle and its environs. Most of these maps are also found at the Seattle Collection in the Downtown Seattle Public Library, but the best copies to own are still available at Kroll.

What will become of the mapmaking business when John retires? That is for the future to decide, and for us to lament. If you wish to learn more about Seattle’s maps, stop by the company Monday-Friday and visit. You may also read the well-written

NW Magazine in the Seattle Times for March 25, 2018.

Fall Luncheon Set for Oct. 27By Jeri Samuelsen ’63, Event Chair

Start your planning for the Queen Anne Alumni Fall Luncheon on Saturday, October 27, 2018. The Fall Luncheon, now in its 37th and

, will be held at the ever popular Seattle Yacht Club. Enjoy the view with the beautiful fall colors. It starts at 11:30 am with a no-host

tickets and QA logo items.

This is always a great time, with old and new friends and some of our teachers and their spouses. The cost is again $35. Because the Annual Meeting has been moved to the Spring Luncheon, the annual election of new board members is no longer part of this luncheon. Hope you can come. Bring a friend.

This year’s meal choices will be: Roast Turkey and all the extras, Seafood Crepes, or Vegan Polenta Cakes with steamed vegetables. Salad, rolls, coffee and tea are included.

See coupon on page 14 or register online at www.qagrizzlies.org. Registrations are due by Oct. 19th. Questions? Please call Jeri Samuelsen ’63 at 425-791-5885.

REUNION RECAPSOff-Year ReunionsMany classes are starting to hold reunions based on major birthdays rather than decades since graduation. The theory is that time is

examples from the classes of 1954, 1957 and 1970.

1954 Class Reunion PackageBy Dee Hawkes ’54

Nothing binds us one to the other like a class reunion. The QA class of 1954 approach is to do one every time we feel like we need one. We operate on the fast track, a dramatic

years. When we zero in on one, it’s because as close friends we want to see each other. Last year, the reunion committee had a Christmas party at the home of Joan (Kipper) Ruud. Everyone brought something to eat or drink, and the event was highlighted by the singing of Christmas carols. This special gathering embraced the Christmas spirit.

For a glimpse about the way this works, being on the committee is to have a piece of the action, even if it’s just making name tags. When it comes to committee members there is no limit. Right now there are at least 19 classmates on the committee.

We’ve been seeing a lot more of each other since we all turned 81. You shouldn’t be surprised, but we’re all huggers. It won’t be long before we’ll be motoring down memory lane this spring or summer on Camaro Island at the Goodenough pad. If you would like to take part contact: Storm (Jobs) Yanicks [email protected], 206-232-8096; or Dee Hawkes [email protected], 425-485-5665.

1957: Yearly LuncheonsBy Janet (Hannon) Mutter ’57

The QA Class ’57 celebrated their 61st reunion with a luncheon at Anthony’s in Des Moines, WA on Wednesday, May 23rd. Forty people attended the event. One classmate came from Pittsburgh, PA. The menu was great and committee members were allowed to bring desserts for a “dessert table”. There was a unanimous decision to schedule a yearly luncheon to keep in touch. The Alumni Association was a great help in communication to classmates - so be sure you keep in touch with them for any address/e-mail changes. 1970 Celebrates Milestone BirthdaysBy Jose Abiles ’70

Once again the class of ’70 celebrated a birthday milestone. Classmates got together last August 12 at the Ballard Elks Club to mark their entry into the Medicare Club and their 65th birthday. This is the second birthday bash the class of ’70 shared together. It started 6 years ago when Jose Abiles and Rosie (Rusin) Hardy got the idea of getting classmates together between the reunion years and the class’s 60th birthday seemed a logical

party was hosted by Rosie at her house and a birthday potluck theme was established. The power of the internet was leveraged and a Facebook group was established to get the word out. Over 50 classmates and spouses attended this party called

“Still Great at 60”. It was such a success that the classmates all agreed that they should celebrate

The second celebration dubbed “Still Alive at 65” was also a hit and was attended by over 40 classmates and spouses. Those not able to attend were able to see the celebration via a Live Stream video on the groups Facebook page. An offshoot of these birthday celebrations has been the establishment of an informal quarterly get together in the Seattle area. Mauricia (Cohen) Spring has been the founder and coordinator of these events and has had great success bringing together classmates.

A class tradition has been born and the classmates are looking forward to their next birthday milestone. So in the year 2022, the Class of ’70 will celebrate with “70 Turns 70”. Planning for the event will begin shortly after the 50th Reunion. To stay in touch with your classmates look us up in Facebook QAHS Class of 70. If you need information or want to help with the next birthday contact Jose Abiles, Mauricia Spring or Rosie Hardy. Or write [email protected].
