Media Release: RITA’s funding announcement

Racing New Zealand has welcomed today’s announcement from the Racing Industry Transition Agency (RITA) that the funding for 2020-21 will remain at $139.6m, the same level budgeted for the 2019/20 season.

The impact of COVID-19 has been felt across the industry, with an enforced lockdown period. However, the positive impact of the repeal of betting levy and the introduction of the Betting Information User Charges, along with the government’s support has provided confidence for the RITA Board to approve the budget for 2020-21. Racing New Zealand appreciates the efforts of the Racing Minister the Rt Hon Winston Peters in this area and also his support of the Racing Industry Bill which was passed earlier this week.

RITA and the three codes undertook cost cutting and reforms over the past months which has also enabled significant savings to be made to support the proposed level of funding for the new season.

Racing New Zealand thanks the RITA Board for its work to determine funding which will allow industry participants to face the new season with confidence.

The passing of the Racing Industry Bill has also set the industry on a new course and Racing New Zealand looks forward to continuing to work closely with TAB NZ when it is established on 1 August.

Note: Racing New Zealand, which will be established under the Racing Industry Bill 2020, is a consultative forum for the racing codes.

A Message from the RIU Regarding Sharp Toenails

Due to recent instances where we have had some injuries post-race suspected to be the result of sharper than normal toenails, trainers are advised to check their racing greyhounds prior to each meeting to ensure that these toenails are at an acceptable length.

Should your Greyhound have toenails deemed to be at an unacceptable length, and pose a risk to other runners, your greyhound may be scratched on the advice of the on-course Veterinarian.

What is deemed an acceptable length?The ideal nail length is that the nails sit 1-2mm off the ground when the dog is standing on a firm flat surface. This can be easily checked by standing the dog on a concrete or lino floor and attempting to slide a sheet of paper between the end of the nail and the floor. If this cannot be done then the nail is too long and should be trimmed.

What is the best way to trim my greyhound’s nails?If the nails are very long, and especially if they are black, trimming should be conservative, because you cannot see where the quick ends so do them “little & often” otherwise, you may well hit the sensitive quick and draw blood. Regular filing of the end of the nail will cause the quick to steadily retract so the nail can be continually shortened until it reaches the desired length. A battery or electric operated sanding tool, eg Dremel is the method of choice as it reduces the risk of cutting the quick and you can shorten, shape and smooth the nails much better than a standard clipper. These can be obtained at Mitre 10, there are also cheaper versions of the Dremel on the market.


Media Release: Passing of Racing Bill welcomed by Industry

The passing of the Racing Industry Bill after its third reading today is a momentous occasion for New Zealand racing and delivers transformational change, says the leaders of New Zealand racing.

“Collectively, the Chairs of the Racing Industry Transition Agency, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Harness Racing New Zealand and Greyhound Racing New Zealand welcome the passing of the Racing Industry Bill, and are appreciative of the significant contribution of Rt Hon Winston Peters to the industry during this term in Parliament.

“The passing of the Bill delivers generational reform of New Zealand racing by providing the power to the industry to move forward in a way that hadn’t been previously possible.

“As leaders of the industry, we acknowledge our responsibility to work together under a new framework with a determined focus to ensure a thriving racing industry.

“Over the past week, RITA and the Codes have worked constructively to reach agreement on an approach for managing racing betting information (racefields). This significant milestone means the industry can have confidence about the management of this important stream of revenue, and it also sends a clear signal to offshore bookmakers about the coordination of the industry.

“The Bill clearly sets out the roles and responsibilities of each industry body, and it is the intention of each organisation to take up these roles and responsibilities with a positive and collaborative outlook from day one after commencement of the Bill.

“While there will always be continual challenges ahead for racing, the reform and support provided by this Government has given this industry the opportunity to reassert the relevance of the sport and put racing on a sustainable footing.“
