Last Time Out

Last Sunday, November 18, the Gophers took on No. 2 Oklahoma State in the 40th matchup between the two programs. Okla-homa State jumped out to a 5-0 lead before No. 5 Mitch McKee, a Minnesota native, had a third period comeback victory to put the home team on the board. Tommy Thorn dropped the next match before No. 11 Steve Bleise had a last minute victory despite an injured hand.

The Cowboys rolled out of intermission with three major decisions, but No. 2 Gable Steveson helped the home crowd leave hap-py with a huge upset of No. 3 Derek White after a takedown and nearfall in the first minute of the match.

The Gophers fell 23-9, but it was their tight-est margin against Oklahoma State since a 20-17 loss on November 29, 2015.

About the Jackrabbits

The star attraction for the Jackrabbits is No. 1 Seth Gross, an NCAA finalist in 2017 before taking home the individual title last season. He finished last year with only one loss. Gross has been a two-time All-Amer-ican and two-time Big 12 conference champion at 133-pounds.

Gross pinned Arizona State’s Josiah Kline on November 11 in his only match this season. Gross is an Apple Valley, Minnesota, native.

Their other ranked wrestler is Henry Pohlymeyer. Pohlmeyer was an NCAA qualifi-er last season and he won one match on the consolation side of the bracket. The Iowa native had a 137-31 high school record.

Welcoming back Damion

Jackrabbits coach Damion Hahn will be returning to Maturi Pavilion for the first time as a head coach after becoming a Gophers wrestling legend during his four years at the univer-sity. Hahn was a four-time All-American and a three-time Big 10 individual champion as the Gophers won team national titles during his first two years on campus.

Minnesota coach Brandon Eggum was an assistant on the Gopher staff when Hahn was a student-athlete.

In 2004, Hahn was named Jesse Owens Big 10 Male Athlete of Year. Hahn was inducted to the school Hall of Fame in 2018.

Up Next

Next up the Gophers head to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invitational before heading even further out west to take on Fresno State in California the following weekend.

The Gophers begin Big Ten competition on January 6 against Rutgers at home.

2018-19 GOPHER COACHING STAFF

6MINNESOTA WRESTLING

HEAD COACH BRANDON EGGUMBrandon Eggum completed his first season as the Gophers’ head coach in 2016-17 after spending the previous five seasons serving as the program’s head assistant coach. This is Eggum's 18th on the wrestling team staff. Prior to assuming an assistant coach role in 2004, Eggum served as the team’s strength and conditioning coordinator (2001-2004).

Following a decorated career as a Gopher wrestler, Eggum joined the staff in 2000-01 and has since helped train and develop nine individ-ual national champions, 27 individual conference champs and 67 All-Americans. The team success during that time has also been remark-able, a run which has included all three of the program’s national titles, five Big Ten championships and seven National Duals crowns.

Since joining the staff, Eggum has played a part in national title runs by Luke Becker, Jared Lawrence, Dustin Schlatter and Jayson Ness, as well as two-time champions Damion Hahn, Cole Konrad and Tony Nelson. All seven won Big Ten titles with Eggum on staff, but the list of Big Ten champs during Eggum’s tenure also includes: Garrett Lowney, Owen Elzen, Ryan Lewis, Leroy Vega, Jacob Volkmann, Mack Reiter, C.P. Schlatter, Roger Kish, Mike Thorn, Kevin Steinhaus, Dylan Ness and Chris Dardanes. The list of All-Americans under Eggum’s watch goes on even longer.

Prior to his coaching career, Eggum was a four-time letterwinner for the Gophers from 1997 to 2000. As a sophomore, Eggum earned an All-America certificate at 177 pounds. In 1999, he bumped up to 184 pounds, where he would place second and third at the next two NCAA Championships, respectively. Eggum also won the Big Ten title at his weight both of those seasons and helped Minnesota win the 1999 Big Ten championship, the program’s first since 1959. Eggum’s name still litters the program’s record books as well. His 115 career wins and his .833 career winning percentage (115-23) are both among 25 best in Gopher history, while his 61 dual victories is tied for 12th.

As impressive as Eggum was on the mat, he also stood out in the classroom as a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in May 2000, with a B.S. in Applied Economics.

A native of Sidney, Mont., Eggum currently resides in Stillwater, Minn., with his wife Katrina, son Greyson, and two daughters, Lillian and Monroe.
