Description of Monnment
The monument comprISes 2 lime kilns of post-medieval date situated within thewestern extension to the Brawlbin plantation
The monument consists of the foundatIons of 2 circular lime kilns and traces ofquarrying on open heather moorland The larger of the 2 lime kilns measures about :imin diameter with 2 opposed entrances and with remains of a flue to the S The kiln hastumbled stone grass-covered walls about 70cm high The second kiln is very small,being about I 5m in diameter and with an entrance to the N The walls of this kiln arealso of grass-covered tumbled stone There is an area of quarrying to the E of the kilnsand a number of low mounds of spoil in the surrounding area.
These kilns are likelv to be of post-rnedieval date Limestone was burned in order toproduce lime for fenilising plants and producing whitewash
The surrounding land is grass and heather covered moorland There is a coniferplantation some 40m back trom the monument. There are rabbit holes on and aroundthe monument
Forest Enterprise's Objectives
i To ensure that the monument and its surrounding area are kept free of trees andscrub, thereby preserving both the archaeological remains and their setting
ii To maintain and lI11prove access to tlie monument, and to enhance its setting in thewider landscape
Management
Issues requiring attention:A way marked route needs to be provided to this site in conjunction with the adjacentsite 0426Rabbit holes on the site are not active as at 6/99 but should be monitored at annualinspections.
Work proposals
a Harvesting operations
No harvesting operations arc planned during the term of this management plan If anywoody regeneration/colorllsation is found within the scheduled area during routineinspections then the follOWing conditions will be applied -All trees and shrubs shall be cut otf at ground level, the stumps or roots being left inthe ground and not grubhed out Trees should be cut by hand or by the use of a handheld power saw These measures will enable the trees to be felled in such a lVav as to
cause no damage to the remains of the monument or thc ground surface within thescheduled areaWhere necessarv stumps should be treated with the appropriate chemical according tothe statutory' 'Code of practice for safe use of pesticides on farms and holdings"(HMSO 1990) prepared hy MAFF, HSC and DoEAny brash resulting (,'om these operations shall be removed well away from the area ofthe scheduled ancient monument Cut timber shall be removed from the site bv cuttinginto easily transportable pieces, rather then by dragging, in case this causes damage tounderlying archaeology If brash is to be burned, this operation shall be carried outwell away from the scheduled areaIf appropriate a harvester may be used to fell and lift trees from the scheduled area thatare within its reach as the machine itself must be placed in a position out with thescheduled area Care must be taken not to disturb the ground surface within thescheduled area during these operationsNo vehicles shall enter the scheduled area
The scheduled area and an area 20m beyond the edge of the scheduled area will bekept tree free Anv natural regeneration of trees, scrub, or bracken will be assessed atyearly Intervals and controlled using hand held scrub cutters and herbicides whereappropriate. No vehicles will be allowed in the scheduled area,

Public access will be Improved bv provision of way-marking and maintenance of aclear track to the site (Appendi, 3)This route and \\av marking will be Inspected on a yearly basis in September each vear

f Tree planting
No tree planting will take place within the scheduled area or within 20m beyond theedge of the scheduled area.
g Site maintenance
The site is to be checked on a yearly basis to identify any site maintenance required.No work other then those specified in the management agreement conditions of thisplan, shall be carried out in the scheduled area without the prior approval of HistoricScotland.
h Access/signs maintenance
Access paths and way markers will be inspected on a yearly basis and any maintenancerequired recorded and carried out.
Management Agreement Conditions
The Occupier undertakes:
I. To monitor and control all scrub, tree and bracken regeneration in the ScheduledArea to prevent colonisation.
2. Not to plant trees within 20 metres of the Scheduled Area.
3. Not to cut any drains, ditches or dykes across, or within 20 metres of, theScheduled Area.
4. Not to use the Scheduled Area as a dump for any material.
5. Not to use wheeled or tracked vehicles within the Scheduled Area
6. Not to park any farm or forestry machinery on the Scheduled Area, nor to use thearea for storing any materials.
7. Not to construct any building works or access tracks within 10 metres of theScheduled Area.
8. Not to afford any person access to the Scheduled Area for the purpose of using ametal detector unless that person can produce the written consent of ScottishMinisters.
9. To permit any authorised representative of Scottish Ministers access to theScheduled Area without prior notice.
10 To allow public access at all reasonable times to the Scheduled Area. An accessroute will be way-marked as shown on the attached map extract (Appendix 3) Thisroute will be checked annually to ensure it provides adequate guidance and access
I I To report any objects such as pottery, flint or bone, or archaeological features,which are found within the Scheduled Area Such objects should be left undisturbedand reported to the Council Archaeologist, Historic Scotland or your local museum
Liaison
Formal consultation every 5 vears with Historic Scotland to review the managementstrategy of the monument prior to the preparation of the subsequent Management PlanMeetings will be held with local Historic Scotland staff as required
Monitoring

The monument known as Bridge of Broubster, lime kilns 145(!m ENE ofcomprises the foundations of two lime kilns and traces of quarrying onopen heather moorland. The area to be scheduled measures 75mNNW-SSE, by SOm ESE-WNW, to include the remains of the two kilns, thequarrying and the spoil heaps. The monument, which lies in the Parishof Halkirk and the County of Caithness as shown outlined in red on thePlan annexed and executed as relative hereto and which forms part of thesubjects described in the Disposition by Alan Douglas Pilkington in favourof David Farquhar and another dated 2 May and recorded in the Divisionof the General Register of Sasines for the County of Caithness on 9 Juneboth in the year 1950 (the present owner whereof being Derek Ian Wardand Susan Kirby, Cae Caled, Waimfawr, Caernarfen, Gwynedd), is herebyincluded in the Schedule of Monuments appearing to the Secretary ofState for Scotland to be of national importance compiled and maintainei byhim n r'ner Sf?('ti0T' 1(1) of th':' A!E:~cnt I\L-..GU!I;CT.lts .-.:.n.1 /1.rchh(:ulogical AreasAct 1979.

The monument known as Bridge of Broubster, lime kilns 1450m ENE ofcomprises the foundations of two lime kilns and traces of quarrying onopen heather moorland. The area to be scheduled measures 75mNNW-SSE, by GOm ESE-WNW, to include the remains of the two kilns, thequarrying and the spoil heaps.
