ALL SAINTS
Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!
Happy Feast Day and Anniversary St. Charles Borromeo Church Family
Since 2016 will be the 225th Anniversary of our wonder-ful Parish since 1791 and the 100th Anniversary of our beau -ful church, we are beginning a year of celebra ons with our Feast Day Mass this Wednesday, November 4 at 6:30pm. It will be bilingual since we usually have a Spanish Mass on Wednesday evening and also because this was Spanish terri-tory in 1791 - and the priest was paid directly by the Spanish government! Let’s all come together to celebrate our love for Jesus and His Church Family here at Borromeo at our Feast Day Mass followed by fellowship.
Feast Day (November 4) Let us give all our thanks and praise to Jesus who works through all the Saints—especially our beloved St. Charles Borromeo—and all the saints, living and passed on, who ever were and are members of our awesome parish family! Yes, you are saints, too! Any me you do God’s will or some act or work or prayer of love you are holy and saintly. I agree with St. Paul who said in his le ers to the early Churches, “To all the holy ones [saints] in Jesus Christ, I give thanks to God every
me I think of you, praying always for all of you with joy in my every prayer, because of your partnership for the Gospel. I am confident that the One who began the good work in you will con nue it un l the day of Jesus Christ.” (Phil. 1:1-6) Thank you, Jesus, and each member of SCB, who par ci-pates with faith and prayer and spiritual growth, with love and concern and ac ve service in so many beau ful ways. Please pray and listen to what Jesus is calling you to do in our parish—maybe a new group or ministry.
St. Charles Borromeo (1538—1584)
The name of St. Charles Borromeo is associated with re-form. Although he belonged to a noble Milanese family and was related to the powerful Medici family, he desired to de-vote himself to the Church. When his uncle, Cardinal de Medici, was elected pope in 1559 as Pius IV, he made Charles cardinal-deacon and administrator of the archdiocese of Mi-lan while he was s ll a layman and a young student. Because of his intellectual quali es he was entrusted with several im-portant offices connected with the Va can and later appoint-ed Secretary of State with full charge of the administra on of the papal states. The un mely death of his elder brother brought Charles to a definite decision to be ordained a priest, despite rela ves’ insistence that he marry. He was ordained
priest at the age of 25, and soon a erward he was consecrat-ed bishop of Milan. It had been Charles who encouraged the Pope to renew the Council of Trent in 1562 a er it had been suspended 10 years before. Working behind the scenes, St. Charles de-served the credit for keeping the Council in session when at several points it was on the verge of breaking up. Eventually St. Charles was allowed to devote all his me to the archdiocese of Milan. The religious and moral picture was far from bright. The reform needed in every phase of Catholic life among both clergy and laity was ini ated at a local Provincial Council. Specific regula ons were drawn up for bishops and other clergy: if the people were to be con-verted to a be er life, these had to be the first to give a good example and renew their apostolic spirit. He traveled un ringly in order to visit the parishes of his
sprawling diocese. Everywhere he paid a en on to the big and small ques ons of everyday church life. St. Charles himself took the ini a ve in giving good example. He allo ed most of his income to charity, forbade himself all luxury, imposed severe penances upon himself. He sacrificed wealth, high honors, esteem and influence to become poor. The extent to which Charles Borromeo was led in his pastoral work by love for his people became evident during the plague and famine of 1576. As
the sickness spread in Milan, even government officials fled from the imperiled city. All care for the sick collapsed. The archbishop stayed at his post and assumed command, minis-tering to the sick and dying, and helping those in want. He tried to feed 60,000 to 70,000 people daily. To do this he borrowed large sums of money that required years to repay. Work and heavy burdens of his high office began to affect his health; he died in Milan at the age of 46 on the night of November 3-4, 1584. He was canonized in 1610. He was one of the towering figures of the Catholic Reforma on, a patron of learning and the arts, and though he achieved a posi on of great power, he used it with humility, personal sanc ty, and unselfishness to reform the Church of the evils and abuses so prevalent among the clergy and nobles of the
mes. St. Charles Borromeo is the patron saint of those with ulcers and stomach diseases, of bishops, catechists and cate-chumens, of seminarians and spiritual directors. Thought for the Day: It was the death of his brother, Federi-go, that brought about a change in St. Charles Borromeo, turned him to God and the affairs of his own soul. From this beginning, he became a dedicated priest, a zealous and ener-ge c bishop, and a saint of God. That should make all of us ponder our own lives.

All Saints Day—November 1, 2015
Story: On one occasion the saint, at the urging of sever-al of his priests, joined them in a game of billiards. While the game was going on, one of the priests posed a ques on for his companions. “What would we do,” he asked, “If we knew that the world was going to end in an hour?” “I’d start praying right away,” one of them answered, and another added, “I’d want to make a general confession cover-ing my whole life.” The others responded along similar lines. But St. Charles, who had a feeling that the ques on had been posed to see how he might answer, kept his silence. Finally one of the others put the ques on to him directly: “What would you do, Excellency, if the world were coming to an end within the hour?” “Why, I’d just con nue with the game of billiards,” he told them. “A er all, I began it with the full inten on of hon-oring God.” The reply, as profound as it was unexpected, taught the priests a lesson—that even in our recrea on it is possible to give glory to God.
The center stained glass window in the Sanctuary depicts our patron saint giving Holy Communion
to his friend St. Robert Bellarmine. There is also a pain ng of him in the café,
as well as a statue on the outside of our school building.
In Memoriam In the month of November, it is a centuries-old tradi on of the Catholic Church to remember all those who have passed on. We pray for our deceased beloved at every Mass and in our daily prayer and ac ons of love inspired by their good example. Here at Borromeo we have a couple of ways to celebrate your loved ones and all are invited to par cipate. 1. Write the names of your loved ones in our Book of Re-
membrance near the Tabernacle. 2. Bring pictures of your loved ones to be placed by the
Tabernacle and our Lady’s statue (to be picked up be-fore Thanksgiving.
“Lord, for your faithful people, life is changed, not ended.” Eucharis c Prayer, Mass for the Dead
Pope Francis Speaks to our Hearts
The Middle Class of Holiness “To be sure, the tes mony of faith comes in very many forms, just as in a great fresco, there is a variety of colors and shades; . . . In God’s great plan, every detail is important, even yours, even my humble li le witness, even the hidden witness of those who live their faith with simplicity in everyday family rela onships, work rela onships, friendships. “There are the saints of every day, the “hidden” saints, a sort of “middle class of holiness,” as a French author said, that “middle class of holiness” to which we can all belong.”
—Homily, April 14, 2013
For reflec on: How can your family rela onships, work rela onships, and friendships be a means to help you grow closer to the Lord? How can you find holiness in your everyday rou ne as a mem-ber of the “middle class of holiness”?
Joke of the Week A li le boy was caught swearing by his teacher, “Jeffrey,” she said, “you shouldn’t use that kind of lan-guage. Where did you hear it?” “My daddy said it,” he responded. “Well, that doesn’t ma er,” she explained. “You don’t know what it means.” “I do too,” Jeffrey corrected. “It means the car won’t start.”
Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!
A Holy Community through Holy Communion. Your brother in Jesus,
On Monday, November 2 - All Souls Day, Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. to remember all of our beloved relatives and friends who have died. Please call the office (946-1893) with names of your loved ones who have passed on since November 2, 2014. These will be prayed for by name dur-ing Mass. We will also have available a memorial candle which can be carried in during the entrance pro-cession, then placed in the sanctuary during Mass. You may remember ANY loved one with a candle,
regardless of when they died, or whether they were Borromeo parishioners or not.
We will have shelves to display your 5x7 photo (with name on the back) so all are welcome to bring a picture to re-member your beloved close to Jesus. There will be a reception after Mass in the café. Please let the office know how many in your family will be attending. If anyone wants to help with the Memorial Mass, please call the parish office at 946-1893.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5: 3) “Poor in spirit” is confusing for many of us. It simply means to place your trust in God, putting His will first and being strong in faith. As we celebrate the lives of the saints on All Saints Day, remember, we, too, are called to be saints. Dialing down our own pride and ego and turning up the humility will help us on our path to saint-hood.
We pray that we increase our trust in God, putting Him first in all things.

St. Charles Borromeo Parish School of Religion
Dear Parishioners:
This morning we welcome our third graders who lead us in the ministries at our 8:30 Mass. A dozen children in the third grade class studied our saints and chose one to learn about and dress up as. All PSR students will partici-pate in Mass today, after learning about Saints and shar-ing a symbol of a Saint about which they learned a little bit extra. These symbols will be offered at the Presenta-tion of Gifts. I hope you were able to see them, as you remembered your own beloved saints.
All our PSR students and families will gather in the cafete-ria today for a special saints celebration, which will in-clude prayer, a saints museum, dress up and many other family friendly activities. Thanks to all our Catechists who made an extra effort to help children learn about the Communion of Saints.
This month, we honor all the saints, not just those who have been officially recognized by the church through canonization. This honors Grandpa Fred and Aunt Mary and all the members of our fami-lies and others who are enjoying their eternal re-ward. These are the people we loved on earth and still do. They are the ones who have a spe-cial interest in us as their families left on earth. They are the perfect ones to pray to for assis-tance, so they can add their voices to ours.
Parents of children preparing for the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation are invited to join us November 15 at 10am in the cafeteria to watch the Reconciliation video with their child!
Lastly, First grade and the Introdución class celebrated Halloween last Sunday during their PSR class by carving pumpkins and learning the pumpkin prayer. What fun we had! Thank you Mrs. Saale, Karie S., Miss Maria, Miss Rosa and parents for helping us have a fun time and learn a new prayer!
SCB Mini Vinnies will be Freez’n 4 A Reason November 14th – 15th. To raise awareness and understanding of the plight of the homeless, students will setup and reside outside on the tree lot in a “Box City” for eighteen hours. The parish is invit-ed to visit Box City to talk with the students.
Homelessness is not just a big city issue. It can be found right here in our parish boundaries. In 2014 the SCB St. Vincent de Paul assisted 58 individuals, and so far in 2015 they have helped 62 individuals facing homelessness. Many of those assisted were single mothers and their children. These numbers do not completely represent the amount of good that SVDP does in the effort to prevent homelessness. The number of referrals for the homeless from outside our parish boundaries to other agencies, such as St. J & A, St. Patrick Center, and Rev. Rice are not tracked.

All Saints Day—November 1, 2015
Family Gospel Reflection The Gospel for today's feast is always Matthew's account of the Beatitudes. At first they seem to favor the meek, the humble, the merciful. But then Jesus ends with some tough ones, aimed at those who are persecuted, insulted, and slandered. While it may sound negative, Jesus is ac-tually giving us encouragement.
An important part of our faith is the call to spread it. Some people do that by sharing their faith during their lunch break. Others teach formation classes to prospec-tive Christians. Some try to bring Christian values into the legal system by advocating for the rights of the poor, the unborn, or immigrants. Some become missionaries in countries that disapprove of Christianity.
So there are many ways to spread the faith, and many types of saints who are celebrated today. Some were rejected by their families, some by their friends, and oth-ers by local government or even religious leaders. Some even gave their lives for their faith. That's what the first reading means by "washed . . . in the blood of the Lamb" (Revelation 7:14).
Maybe today would be a good day to learn about your favorite saint. What made her special? How did he spread the faith? What persecution did they suffer? Per-haps you could talk about the saints with your children. What saint shares a name with your child? As St. John says in the second reading, we are all God's children (1 John 3:2). The world that did not know Jesus does not know us. As we get to know our favorite saints, their lives can inspire us to face persecution or ridicule for our faith--or at least give us the courage to talk about our faith, and maybe change someone else's life.
Look through old photographs of family members. May-be they are now with God. Using the qualities outlined in today’s Gospel, recall qualities of these people and how they are example for your family today. Remember these people especially in prayer today.
* One person in my life who is a special example of how to live is …
* The greatest peacemaker I have every known (or known about) is … * I saw God reward the powerless when …

In the Gospel today, Jesus tells us: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength . . . and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you can show your love for our Lord and your love of your neighbor who is hungry, hopeless, alone and fright-ened. If you would like more information on what we do, and how your donations help others, please call Joyce Cain at 636-493-0089.
Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl Ministry gives its mem-bers special prayer time with God resulting in someone receiving a prayerful gift of comfort in their time of need. Shawls are crocheted or knitted into a “mantle of prayer.” Prayers are constantly said dur-ing this process for a recipient who is suf-fering due to infirmity of the mind or body, poverty, sorrow at the loss of a loved one, or distress of certain matters.
A formal, inspirational prayer is attached to the complet-ed shawl before it is blessed by one of our parish priests.
We are seeking volunteers who like to crochet or knit, but most importantly love to pray. We can also use cash donations to purchase yarn.
We have a number of Prayer Shawls available for those who are suffering. As the recipients turn over their needs and sufferings to God, we ask that they might receive perfect consolation, healing, guidance, comfort, and de-liverance from their afflictions.
If you are interested in joining our ministry, or know of someone in need of a Prayer Shawl, please call Mary Kutchback at 636-946-9758.
