Volunteers Needed On July 7-8 we will have a voter drive before and after all Masses to help people register to vote. We need a few volun-teers to help with this. If you are able to help, please contact Fr. Dotson with your name, phone number, and which Mass you would be able to help.

As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel.

This week I will have my 1-year anniversary here at St. Charles Borromeo. It has been an amazing year, filled with many challenges and blessings. There have been some surprises, like needing to replace our sewer system or repair our historic church bells. There have been won-derful experiences that brought our parish together, like Unity Day and the Parish Picnic. For my part, there has been a lot of learning. Thank you to everyone for your warm welcome and support during this past year. Thank you for your patience as I learn how to lead this won-derful parish. I am so honored that after a year as the Parochial Administrator, the Archbishop has officially appointed me the Pastor of St. Charles Borromeo. This will take effect at my installation, which will happen later this fall. Thank you again. I look forward to many more blessed years here.

Unity Spotlight Vacation Bible School was June 4-8. This event unites many different parts of our parish, especially bringing together our school and PSR communities both as participants and as leaders. It was a great week of fun and faith. After the week ended, many of our decorations were donated to Main Street Church for use at their VBS, helping to strengthen unity within our St. Charles community. Thank you to everyone who participated!

June 27 Feast Day St. Cyril of Alexandra “That anyone could doubt the right of the holy Virgin to be called the Mother of God fills me with astonishment. Surely she must be the Mother of God if our Lord Jesus Christ is God, and she gave birth to him! Our Lord’s disciples may not have used those exact words, but they delivered to us the belief those words en-shrine, and this has also been taught us by the holy fa-thers.” (St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop and Doctor of the Church; Optional Memorial – June 27)

As Catholics, we believe in the fundamental rights and dig-nity of all people. We believe that it is the responsibility of governments to protect the rights of all people. In recent months, there have been several alarming changes to American immigration policies and procedures which run contrary to this role, including the rescinding of DACA, the denial of asylum status for those escaping domestic or gang violence, and the separation of children from their parents. Our bishops have objected forcefully against these changes. We invite all parishioners to join us on Wednes-day, June 27 at 7pm in the Church for a bilingual Rosary to pray for a immigration reform that respects the dignity of all people and families. To learn more about the Church’s teaching on immigration, visit: http://www.usccb.org/about/migration-and-refugee-services/index.cfm

Stroke Scan Plus will be at St. Charles Borromeo on JULY 24 & 25 to provide life-saving, wellness ultrasound screenings. It is important to perform preventive maintenance for ourselves yearly. Do you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease, stroke, abdominal aneurisms or internal can-cers? If so, do not miss this opportunity for early detection of a possibly serious disease. These screenings are typically NOT performed at your annual check-up, and insurance companies may not pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Collective-ly, these screenings cost thousands of dollars in a hospi-tal. Stroke Scan Plus will be offering them to you for $149 for all 8 combined ultrasound screenings (Stroke, AAA, PAD, AFIB & organs). Insurance is NOT necessary and appointments are limited. Please call 1-866-935-7226 to schedule an appoint-ment today for you or a loved one. Prevention is your key to quality health! www.strokescan.com. Registration for this event will be after all Masses on July 14 and 15 in the St. Charles Room. You must be registered in advance to take part in this screening. Representatives will be here that weekend to answer any and all questions you may have.

June 24, 2018 –Gospel Background

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference

June 24, 2018 The Nativity of John the Baptist

In the Gospel today, we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist and everyone pondered the question: “What, then, will this child be?

For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.”

This month, “the hand of the Lord has been acting

through you” as your gifts to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brought his love and care to the poor by assisting 88

families, serving 220 meals in our soup kitchen and providing $5457.49 for utilities, rent and other bills, etc..

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

The first two chapters of Luke's Gospel alternate between sto-ries of two births. One is the annunciation and birth of John the Baptist, who was, for Luke, the last great prophet of the Old Testament and who prepared the way for someone greater than any prophet—Jesus the Messiah. The annunciation and birth of Jesus is the other story. The story of John sets the very Jewish environment into which Jesus and John were born. Jesus' annunciation and birth begins to move the Gospel into the environment of the Roman empire.

In the verses before those read today, the birth of John the Baptist has been announced by the angel Gabriel to Zechariah, who was performing his duties as a priest in the Jerusalem Temple. Gabriel then announced the birth of Jesus to Mary in her home in Nazareth. Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth, are an old couple who have never had children. Mary is engaged to Joseph, but they have not yet come to live together.

We read today that Elizabeth's neighbors and relatives rejoice with her because God has shown her mercy in the birth of a son. But they are confused when she tells them that his name is to be John, which means “God has been gracious.” Zechari-ah has been unable to speak since Gabriel appeared, because, unlike Mary, he doubted the angel's word. But when he writes on a tablet “John is his name” all are amazed, and a great fear comes upon everyone. Fear, along with joy and praise, is for Luke the appropriate response to God's mercy. People ask, “What, then, will this child be?” But this question has already been answered by the angel. “He will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.”

Zechariah responds with praise in his famous canticle, the Benedictus. But that is not read today. Instead we jump to the last verses of the chapter, which explain that John will become strong in spirit living in the desert until it is time to show him-self to the people of Israel. When John appears again at the beginning of Chapter 3, after the stories of the birth and child-hood of Jesus, he will prepare those people for the ministry of Jesus by preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J.
