    English 1A is a composition course which f ocuses on the dev elopment and application of the academic writing process. Students read and assess models of expository , analy tical, and argumentativ e prose to learn techniques of ef f ectiv e writing. Students practice strategies f or planning, draf ting, sharing, and rev ising essay s in a v ariety of rhetorical modes. Students apply critical reading skills to the ev aluation of source material in the dev elopment of a thesis-driv en, research-supported essay . To create the research essay , students apply techniques in organizing, dev eloping, and craf ting prose which supports their arguments and balances outside sources with their own v oice as writers. To achiev e this end, students write no f ewer than six essay s (a minimum of 6,000 words) and read at least f iv e works, two of which are book length. (C-ID: ENGL 100).
