TThe inaugural National High School Track and Field Hall ofFame induction ceremony was just about everything any T&F fan,historian, athlete, coach, or official could have hoped for. The firstclass of 30 inductees was honored during a grand ceremony onThursday, March 8, 2018 – the eve of this year’s New BalanceNationals Indoor – at the New York Athletic Club. The ceremonywas a dream come true for the National Scholastic Athletic

Foundation, which had announced theestablishment of the Hall of Fame theprevious summer, and, after months ofplanning, finally saw the efforts cometo fruition – despite a winter storm thatscrambled travel plans.

The evening began with adelightful pre-ceremony media session and cocktail hour thatallowed for introductions and reunions, as well as spontaneous pho-tos and interviews. Imagine seeing together, and getting to chat with,mid-late ‘70s T&F legends like TSU Tigerbelle teammates KathyMcMillan and Chandra Cheeseborough, or San Francisco 49erteammates Renaldo Nehemiah and Michael Carter, … or meet-ing the one and only Gerry Lindgren, … or feeling the historicbounty of the presence of deceased inductees’ family members, like

Gina Strachan and Brook Doire (granddaughters of JesseOwens and Betty Robinson), … or being in the radiant presenceof Allyson Felix, Class of 2003 prep sensation who still is writingthe final chapters of her career as a 17-time Olympic and WorldChampionships gold medalist.After the opening, everyone adjourned to the adjacent banquet

room to enjoy a world-class dinner and then to witness the intro-duction and procession of the inductees. Introductory remarks byNYAC president James Rafferty and NSAF board member JoshRowe set the stage for the proceedings. Mr. Rafferty’s commentsmade evident how apropos the NYAC was for hosting the event, withthe Club’s legacy of members in the T&F community and with Mr.Rafferty’s own passion for the sport. Mr. Rowe aptly conveyed themagnitude of the occasion as well as great gratitude for all thosewho made it happen.Eleven inductees were personally present for the induction,

including (in order of presentation) history-making hurdler RenaldoNehemiah, long jump record-setter Kathy McMillan, distance leg-ends Gerry Lindgren and Lynn Bjorklund, T&F internet pioneerJohn Dye, masterful journalist Ed Grant, record-smashing milerAlan Webb, shot put legend Michael Carter, barrier-breakingsprinter Chandra Cheeseborough, coaching great Don Norford,

and current Olympic great Allyson Felix. Three other livinginductees – history-making distance runners Jim Ryun and MaryDecker, and shot put great Dallas Long – were unable to attend,but expressed their gratitude via newly recorded video clips.

In eight other cases, family members were on hand to accept forinductees who had passed away.

• Romel Mathias, for her father, Olympic decathlon champ Bob Mathias;

• Gina Strachan, for her grandfather, culture changing sprinter Jesse Owens;

• Tina Marie Wood, for her grandfather, versatile sprinter Frank Wykoff;

• Cassandra Grant, for her aunt, barrier-busting high jumper Alice Coachman;

• Barbara Gallagher, for her daughter, distance great Kim Gallagher;

• Tom Newton, for his father, XC coaching legend Joe Newton;

• Brook Doire, for her grandmother, history-making sprinter Betty Robinson;

To honor the remaining deceased eight inductees – sprint greatWillye White, decathlon and hurdle standout Milt Campbell,sprint stars Eddie Morris and Helen Stephens, super high jumperCornelius Johnson, early vault star Lee Barnes, barrier-breakingsprinter Sol Butler, and early distance star Ted Meredith – atten-dees enjoyed outstanding video presentations for each, includinghistoric photos and video clips, a variety of interviews (both recentand historic), and other footage that brought the inductees to life. Rich Jayne produced videos for NSAF featuring all 30

inductees. Those interviewed especially for the inductee videosincluded track and field historians on the selection committee, suchas Dave Johnson, Jack Pfeifer, and Marc Bloom. The foregoingselectors were present for the ceremony, as were selectors WaltMurphy, and, of course, the NSAF’s Joe Lanzalotto, Jim Spier,and Tracy Sundlun. Also serving on the 11-member selection com-mittee were Mike Kennedy, Marjorie Larney, Bob Jarvis, andJack Shepard. The evening’s presenters included selectors, NSAFstaff members, and others from the track and field world.The historic evening concluded with a great sense of joyous

acknowledgement and recognition for the inductees and their fami-lies, a mission well-accomplished for the selectors and NSAF staff,and the overriding feeling that this was just the beginning – withmany great Hall of Fame inductions to come!

IIt’s interesting how things will work out, sometimes unexpectedly, forthose good folks with good intentions and special gifts. Coach “King”Al Jennings is a good example.As a track and field athlete at West Philadelphia HS, and then at

Maryland State University (now UMD-Eastern Shore) in the 1960s, AlJennings competed in the sprints, relays, pole vault, and even cross-country – among other things. “I was a jack of all trades,” he says now,with a laugh. “And there weren’t a lot of people of color runningdistances back then.” Or vaulting, for that matter.Jennings had considered doing graduate work in Newark, New

Jersey, but he says the setting reminded him too much ofPhiladelphia. But he found another graduate program at MontclairState U. that worked out much better, and in 1969 he landed himselfa permanent substitute teacher job at Trenton Central HS. There, heencountered Central’s great T&F coach, Holland Moore, and beforeJennings knew it, he’d been enlisted as an assistant coach.Little did Coach Jennings know that more than four decades later,

he’d have established a legacy of his own, guiding scores of champi-ons at TCHS and his own Trenton Track Club.Coach Jennings has coached TCHS athletes in track events from

the 400m to the 2 mile (and the pole vault, of course), and in crosscountry, Trenton Central’s program kept progressing through the1970s, reaching an early peak of historic proportions by 1978, whena long sprint/middle distance crew of Fred Gore, Darrell Jeffress,

Andrew Bing, Ron Singletary, and Aubrey McKithen emerged toblaze a 4x400, 4x800 double at the Penn Relays – in the span of 14minutes – which had never been seen before. The crew set meetrecords of 3:12.2 and 7:39.5 in the prelims that would stand forseven years each – all after a heroic runner-up DMR finish – and thenwent on to win both finals in short order. McKithen was named the Outstanding Athlete of the Meet and the

group was inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame this past April.Success would continue for Trenton Central through Coach

Moore’s retirement in 2000 and as Coach Jennings took the reins ofthe program. The next 15 years or so would see great athletes likeWendy Vereen, Jermaine Collier, Devon Bond, Zyaire Clemes,and many others shine for TCHS at the state and national levels.Coach Jennings retired as the TCHS Head Coach in 2010, but he

continued to work with the program. Meanwhile, way back in 1973,he had launched the Trenton Track Club. “We launched the clubbecause we were seeing kids going to track camps and not learningthe things we thought they could learn.” Two of Jennings’ most recent protégés have been Athing Mu

(Class of 2020) and her older brother, Malual (’18). Athing, who runsexclusively for the club, made big waves last year at NBNO, takingsecond in the 800 final as a freshman. Then, this past winter as asophomore, she won the event at NBNI, clocking 2:06.59.“She’s really very smart,” says Coach Jennings. “She understands

the sport better than most coaches. Her idols are Joetta Clark[legendary New Jersey Olympian] and Sammy Watson [Texas A&Mfreshman who has captured multiple NBNO championships and is a2:01 800 runner].”Coach Jennings has a deep love for the sport – for all sports, really

– and the way they can positively affect the lives of youth. This is whathas kept him at it for nearly 50 years.“Track and field is one of the greatest sports we have,” he says. “It’s

a sport where almost any kid can be successful to some degree.”

“Billy is there when they start and there when they finish.”

EEver since Billy Edringston moved up to become AssociateAthletics Director for Game Operations and Facilities at NorthCarolina A&T State University in 1997, principles espoused bythen-A&T head track coach Roy “Spaceman” Thompson haveremained burned in Edringston’s brain.“The biggest thing is creating a culture of wanting to do things

the right way; once you’ve established that, it’s that much easier tofollow through,” Edringston remembers. “Coach Thompson alwaysemphasized treating everyone right – officials, volunteers, medicalstaff, everyone. If you do that, they’ll keep coming back.”The National Scholastic Athletics Foundation first came to A&T to

host what was then Nike Outdoor Nationals in 2005. What theNSAF saw at Irwin Belk Track inside of Aggie Stadium, what theNSAF experienced, how the Foundation was hosted and treated –indeed, the entire experience has made the Foundation want to keepcoming back. Now 2018 is the 14th year at A&T for what is nowNew Balance Nationals Outdoor, drawing more than 5,000 athleteseach year. Some folks who have never been to the meet before, fromoutside the state, are unaware of the school and its facility – andspeculate on its capacity to host such a major meet. But when theyarrive in Greensboro and step inside, they speculate no more. Thanks to Edringston and has staff, Aggie Stadium and Irwin

Belk Track have few peers in the nation when it comes to hosting a

large-scale track and field meet. The venue has the Mondo Super XPerformance track; a seating capacity of more than 21,000; and astate-of-the-art video scoreboard. NBNO is just one of severalmajor meets hosted here, a list that includes the NCAA EastRegionals, the USATF Junior Olympics (which return to A&T againthis summer), the International Friendship & Freedom Games,the MEAC Outdoor Championships, and the North Carolina(NCHSAA) State Championships.As for Edringston himself, he began working at A&T as a student

athletic trainer in 1981. In 1986, he became an assistant women’sbasketball coach under head coach Tim Abney – eventually help-ing lead the Aggies to become the first MEAC women’s team toearn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in 1994. ThenEdringston was named the facilities director in 1997.For NBNO (and other such events), Edringston serves as the

A&T liaison and facility contact for the NSAF, as well as for the Cityof Greensboro. His responsibilities also include working withofficials, timers, parking attendants, ticket-takers, custodial staff,volunteers, coaches and sponsors to ensure meets are conductedto the highest of standards.In 2014, the UNC System Staff Organizations honored

Edringston with the Erskine Bowles Award. Earl M. Hilton III,Director of Athletics at A&T, noted that meets like NBNO and theJOs bring 1000s of youth and their families to the university, “wherethese future college students are exposed to the benefits andopportunities A&T offers.” He commented on the size and scope ofthe events and said, “Billy is there when they start and there whenthey finish.”Edringston gives lots of credit to the A&T Administration, as well

as to “the outstanding staff over at the physical plant in theDeHuguley Building” for putting on the many high-end events.As for the NSAF, he says, “It’s a pleasure working with the NSAF

because of the first class way they do things and how they’re organ-ized. They’ve always been easy to work with and want to do thingsin a first class way, just like we do.”

The NSAF is preparing to host its 4th annual American JavFest onFriday-Sunday, June 29-July 1, 2018 at East Stroudsburg High Schoolin Pennsylvania.As has been the case with most previous JavFests, the weekend

will include competition at every age and ability level, plus great teach-ing and educational opportunities. This year, the Youth (Under-15) andHigh School athletes compete Friday, followed by the Open/Elite ath-letes on Sunday. Saturday will be "Javelin School Day," with an oppor-tunity to learn from some of the world's best coaches. Meanwhile, thepopular Roundtable Panel/Open Discussion will take place Fridaynight, featuring a chance to learn, hear amazing stories, and ask ques-tions of these same mentors. Speaking of which, two-time OlympianSean Furey is one of the featured guests this year.

The JavFest is intended to be an American version of the greatPihtipudas Javelin Carnival in Finland, sharing the joys of the javelinwith throwers of all ages and allowing athletes, coaches and fans of thesport to be fully engaged educationally, socially and competitively.Last year's JavFest was highlighted by four thrilling competitions,

including the Elite Men as Cyrus Hostetler twice beat the IAAFWorld Championships qualifying standard with his winning 272-8.He revved up the crowd, justified their cheers with his first bigthrow, and then celebrated with yells, fist pumps, and high-fivingfans during a joyful sprint down the right side of the sector.Ariana Ince captured the Elite Women's competition with her

201-4, becoming the 7th U.S. woman over 200 feet and eventuallyqualifying for Worlds as well. The High School titles went toProject Javelin Gold athletes Roman Mitchell (207-6) andDana Baker (169-2).

The Iron Wood Throws Classic is in its sixth year. Known as theChicagoland Throws from 2013-2015, the NSAF designed the elitethrowing event not only to bring together some of the top preps inthe country, but also to provide a chance to witness and competealongside some of the best American throwers at the Olympic andWorld Championships levels.Anyone who witnessed Deanna Price’s performance in this

year’s event (June 2 in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho), knows that Iron Woodis a very special opportunity.Price, for years one of the top Americans in the hammer throw,

used Iron Wood to smash the American record with a throw of254 feet, 9 inches – breaking the previous record by more thanthree feet and becoming the 5th longest thrower in global history.The more than a dozen Team NSAF shot putters, and hammer,javelin and discus throwers present at Iron Wood will never forgetPrice’s epic throw. Price graciously posed for photos with ourprep admirers, including Veronica Fraley, Makayla Kelby andFaith Ette (see photo).

Meanwhile, Team NSAF athletes were outstanding:

• Javelin: Zechariah Blake and Lillian HillThe boys were led by the NSAF Project Javelin Gold’s Zech Blake,who nearly PR’ed with his 206-9, followed by teammates RomanMitchell (203-6) and Joe Nizich (185-0) – with Zach Annanie finish-ing 3rd with 200-9. For the girls, Project Javelin’s Lillian Hill had a

seasonal best 143-9, while teammate Dana Baker had to miss themeet with an injury. Ariana Ince (194-11) defended her title for theUSATF women, while Michael Shuey was the men’s champ at 243-7.

• Discus: Shelby Moran and Joshua SobotaU.S. leader Shelby Moran threw 167-11 to edge Makayla Kelby(167-7) and Veronica Fraley (165-7) for Team NSAF’s girls. JoshuaSobota threw a US #4 PR 200-9 on his final attempt to beat US #2Patrick Larrison (197-1) on the boys’ side. Andrew Evans (216-8)and Rachel Dincoff (200-2) were the USATF winners.

• Shot Put: Tyson Jones and Veronica FraleyTyson Jones matched his US-leading PR with a 71-8.25 heave,ahead of Sobota’s US#3 68-10 PR. Then Veronica Fraley got a bigUS#3 PR 49-5.5 for the Team NSAF girls. She improved her bestby two feet. Fraley was followed by Kelby at 46-0.5. The USATF win-ners were Curt Jensen (69-4) and Daniella Hill (59-1.5).

WWhether the venue has been Puerto Rico, Cuba, or the Bahamas –and regardless of whether the competition has been modest or stel-lar – Team NSAF always has stepped up to the plate and performedwith effort and class in its annual Caribbean meet. And 2018 – com-peting for the first time at the Frederick Bastian Track and FieldClassic at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex in Freeport – was noexception.Team NSAF had competed previous years in its own Caribbean

Scholastic Invitational (CSI), launched in 2006, then in Havana,Cuba in a dual with Cuban Youth and Juniors (2015) and at theMemorial Barrientos (2016 and ’17).Twenty-eight outstanding prep track and field athletes from 13

states – selected several weeks earlier and many of whom had com-peted in previous New Balance National meets – convened withNSAF staff and coaches May 30 in Ft. Lauderdale, and then took theshort flight to Freeport the following day. Based at the Grand Lucayan hotel, Team NSAF took to the

Grand Bahama track on Friday, June 1 for a light pre-meet workoutand relay exchange practice, and then returned the following morn-ing for the day-long completion – joined by nearly 300 Bahamianathletes, and benefitting from a warm day with no precipitation.

Here are some of the biggest Team NSAF highlights:

• A US-leading 177-0 javelin by Project Javelin Gold’s SkylarCiccolini (#4 all-time), led a team throws sweep, which also fea-tured teammate Sam Hankins (jav), Patrick Piperi (shot put) andChloe Lindeman (shot put).

• The 4x100m relays double by Team NSAF’s boys (40.44 by GatlinLawson, Charles Lewis, Andre Turay and Caleb Jackson) and

girls (46.39 by Aliya Wilson, Ally Henson, Darci Khan andKailei Collins), continued a streak of no dropped batons by TeamNSAF since CSI began.

• Turay (PR 13.86) and Khan in the 100H, then Rayniah Jones andDominick Houston-Shepard in the 400H all took strong hurdlesvictories. Myles Marshall (both hurdles) and Henson (100H in arerun race with teammate Khan) also performed well.

• Caleb Jackson and Wilson (both 100m), and then MatthewBoling and Collins (both 200m) all took short dash triumphs, withLewis and Lawson (boys 100m) powering in just behind.

• US top-5 performers Nick Ramey (46.69) and Meghan Hunter(53.30) ran fast, victorious 400s, followed by strong runs by team-mates Randolph Ross (boys) and Jan’Tajiah Ford, NicolePayne, and Dajour Miles (girls).

• Project Triple Jump’s Titiana Marsh and Tosin Alao were animpressive 1-2 horizontal jump sweep, matched by a 1-2 long jumpfinish by Boling and Kevin Snyder. A thrilling high jump “jump-off”saw C. J. McBride outlast teammate Randolph Ross.

• Hugh Brittenham (800m and 1,500m) and Brynne Sumner(800m) dominated the middle distance.

Equally important was the fact that Team NSAF had the bounty ofguidance from Coaches Paul Limmer, Carmen Jackson, MackaJones and Sports Psychologist Dr. Margaret Ottley; and treat-ment from the greatest medical staff in the sport – includingClaudia “Sparky” Chapel, Performance Specialist, BCMT, ISP;Dr. Emily Krodel; and Marissa Caldwell, AT – and that everyonebonded together over the four-day trip!
