2 | ST. RAPHAEL PARISH · OSHKOSH

Happy Easter! Today we conclude the Octave (8 days) of Easter. In recent years, today has also become known as Divine Mercy Sunday, a special day of prayer. Please see the article in today’s bulletin regarding how we will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday this year in Oshkosh.

This weekend was also going to be the first weekend of our First Eucharist celebrations. This year, as everyone is unable to receive the Eucharist, we may rekindle in our hearts the desire we probably had when we were in second grade and preparing for First Communion. Perhaps these weeks without being able to be physically present for Mass may help us deepen our appreciation for Holy Mass and the Eucharist.

This second Sunday of Easter we always hear the story of St. Thomas. St. Thomas came to know the reality of the resurrection as he touched the wounds of Christ. Let’s allow our woundedness during these days to be one of the ways in which we know more deeply the reality of the Lord’s resurrection. Perhaps during these days of worry and concern may become days in which we are able to grow in our trust in the Lord.

Along with continuing our prayer for those vulnerable to this virus, and to all our wonderful health care workers, let us also be praying for parents during these days. May they know our support as they become even more adept at balancing many things for their children and family. May our prayer help them to grow in patience and love. God bless you all. I certainly miss you. Gratefully,

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

4 | ST. RAPHAEL PARISH · OSHKOSH

March is the month dedicated to St. Joseph.

Here is what is happening this month: All youth faith formation activities are cancelled until at least April 30. Be on the lookout for communications via email for activities your family can work on at home.

St. Raphael Families of Faith

Resources for the Domestic Church

Here are some ways your family can grow together this week in celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday!

• Say the 3 pm prayer each day as a family April 19-April 25

• Make A Divine Mercy Sundae (See below)

• Make a point to do one act of kindness for someone in your family each day.

Divine Mercy Sundae!

You will need:

•Vanilla ice cream

•Whipped cream

• Maraschino cherries

• Red and blue sprinkles Directions

1. Begin by showing your family the Divine Mercy Image. 2. Explain that Divine Mercy Sunday is always the Sunday after Easter. 3. Show your child the image of the divine mercy on page 9 of this packet. 4. Either summarize or read the history of the Divine Mercy image below: In 1931, our Lord appeared to St. Faustina, a Polish nun, in a vision. She saw Jesus clothed in a white garment with His right hand raised in blessing. His left hand was touching His garment in the area of the Heart, from where two large rays came forth, one red and the other pale. Jesus told her to have a painting done of how he looked when he appeared to her with the words “Jesus I trust in You” on the image. The blue rays symbolize the grace of baptism and the red ray Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. The image has come to represent Jesus’ love and mercy to the world.

How to Make a Divine Mercy Sundae:

• Scoop ice cream into a bowl, and create the rays with 2 long squirts of whipped cream.

• Embellish them with red and blue toppings of your choice.

• You could also use strawberries and blueberries, or make some red and blue sugar. Also, you could just buy red white and blue sprinkles.

• Place the cherry on top.

• The ice cream was made to mirror the Divine Mercy image. As you make the sundae point out how it is similar to the image.

All middle school and High school students are invited to stay in touch with our Youth Ministry program through social media and other online "gatherings."

OPEN HEARTS AND OPEN DOORS: WELCOMING A

GLOBAL OUTREACH CATHOLIC EXCHANGE STUDENT

Hosting an exchange student is an amazing experience for you and for the exchange student. Lourdes Academy would like to welcome

two Global Outreach exchange students for the 2020-2021 academic year. Global Outreach is Catholic exchange program with a mission of building a civilization of love by forming young dynamic Catholic servant leaders for the 21st century. Placement of students becomes a reality when a household opens the door to their heart and home and says “yes” to hosting a student. Currently, 11 students are waiting for their “Good News! We have a host family for you” letter. The students are from Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. Please contact Barbara Tota-Boryczka, Executive Director, [email protected] (920) 540-3085 or Fr. Larry Seidl, Spiritual Director, [email protected] (920) 412-0320 for further information. Here is more information on two of the fine young students who could be placed at Lourdes Academy:

Tadas is 16 years old and lives near Kaunas, Lithuania. He comes from a close family and has a special relationship with his older brother. He describes himself as having a charismatic and friendly personality. He is optimistic and likes helping others to be optimistic. He is also active and cannot stand doing nothing–he always finds activities for himself. His creative side is very strong. While he loves playing and watching sports, he devotes much of his energy to developing his musical talent, playing piano, accordion and guitar. He also loves to draw and act. He is very social, likes meeting new people and finding more friends.

Sofia is 16 years old and lives in a village near Kosice, the second largest city in Slovakia. Her friends and family say that the most beautiful thing about Sofia is her kindheartedness and cheerfulness. Her biggest hobby is cooking and baking, and she would like to acquaint her host family with the food of her small but beautiful country. Her main sport is swimming. As a Global Oureach student, she would like to gain new experiences, become more responsible and independent and grow spiritually.

The Beauty of our Lord

6 | ST. RAPHAEL PARISH · OSHKOSH

Reflecting on the Scriptures

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time. --- 1 Peter 1:3-9

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday, which begins the 2nd week of Easter. Mercy is compassion within discretionary power to pardon someone. I often think mercy is so much easier to give after you’ve been in a position to so badly need it from another. In other words, it is so much easier to be merciful when you’ve been so in need of mercy from another, yourself.

God is so compassionate, so loving that He sent His Son to live among us sinners to die to pay for our sins. The root of God’s compassion for me—and you--is love. Self-giving and undeserved love given freely for me is God’s mercy. I have not earned it. I can’t even do anything to destroy nor distort God’s love because . . . He loves; that is God’s nature. I am not deserving of it nor entitled to it. God gave his Son; Jesus gave His all, His life in bloody injustice.

I remember a child asking me, “Why did Jesus have to die?” It’s quite a question and speaks to the heart of our faith. (Little ones have a way of cutting to the heart of things) Because I’m not adequate, not whole, not perfect, and not without sin and I hurt others in my words and actions---Jesus died. To pay for all of my sins, Jesus gave His life. Jesus died because I’m not fully loving or forgiving. On any given day, I hold on to anger, hurt, unforgiveness, and bitterness. Simply put, I’m so far from perfect that I will continue to hurt God and others till the day I die. It summons humility in me in owning what I am not.

We are all equally inadequate and helpless here---from Mother Teresa to Princess Dianna to Hitler---and the key to genuine humility lies in recognizing that. The raw honesty of that causes me to recognize my neediness and my solidarity in weakness with everyone else. In meditating on God’s Mercy, I own that I nor you are no better than anyone else, and I stand in need of God’s mercy just as much as every sinner on earth. Inward deep reflection brings me to the fact that ultimately we are all equally helpless to give ourselves life.

The invitation to humility is a clear and constant echo inside of Christian spirituality, from Jesus to Mother Teresa, and every spiritual guide---I must become like a little child. I must take the lowest place. I can never consider myself better than anyone else. I know that I need God’s mercy as much as the greatest sinner on earth. However, I don’t come to this by comparing myself to others, but by recognizing how utterly naked I stand outside of God’s mercy.

God’s mercy is like a great light of love and tenderness. God forgives us with his love, healing the wounds of sin. He forgives, He is our salvation.

Lord, have mercy on me and on the whole world.

Betty Schwandt, Pastoral Associate

APRIL 19, 2020 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER | 7

Divine Mercy Sunday

A time for abundant Grace.... Divine Mercy Sunday is here!!!! April 19, 2020 In the past Oshkosh area Catholics have gathered as one at St. Mary's Church, Oshkosh, prayed all the mysteries of the rosary, had confessions, sang the Divine Mercy Chaplet and some have gone to Mass again in thanksgiving. This year is something out of the norm and we will still be able to have Divine Mercy Sunday but just a little different. Please see below for where and when to go....

1. Confessions will be held at all three Oshkosh parishes,

from 1pm to 2:30 pm.

St. Raphael - in church. Please watch for signage and remember the social distancing and the limit of 10 people in church at a time.

St. Jude - at Sacred Heart, in the sacristy. Use 6th Street entry, church will be open. Remember the social distancing and the limit of 10 that includes the priest.

Most Blessed Sacrament, St. Peter's - use the handicap entrance. Fr. Jerry will let you in and out so please wait in your car until it is your turn.

2. Please pray the rosary in reparation for our sins and those of the whole world. We will be united spiritually praying at this time.

3. Spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, as you are waiting for confession in the churches, or in the parking lot at MBS. Jesus will be exposed from 1 pm to 6 pm in the breezeway at St. Peter. Christ will be visible from your cars. Please stay in your cars. If you are at Sacred Heart or St. Raphael, you may pray in church, but please remember not to keep others from confession because of the limit of ten people.

4. Live streaming of the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be at 3 pm at http://www.mbsoshkosh.com, or the Most Blessed Sacrament Oshkosh Facebook page.

5. The Eucharist - we will not be able to receive sacramentally but here is a spiritual communion that we can do:

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

The Promise Divine Mercy Sunday is a great day because of the immeasurable amount of grace Jesus promised to pour forth on this day. In the private revelation accepted publicly by the Church, Jesus made a specific promise to Saint Faustina about Divine Mercy Sunday: “On that day . . . The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.” (Diary, 699)

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES (Acts 2:42-47; 1 Peter 1:3-9; Jn 20:19-31)

“Seeing is believing...” We’ve heard it said a thousand times. But is this what we, as Christians, really believe? This week’s readings seem to beg the question. In 1 Peter we read, “Although you have not seen him you love him….” But in John, “Unless I see the mark…put my finger into the nailmarks…my hand into his side, I will not believe.” It would appear that even among the earliest Christians there was some disagreement about the need to see solid evidence before believing, so we probably shouldn’t be surprised that in today’s cynical world I don’t have to be from Missouri to demand that you ‘show me’ before I’ll believe you. “But,” you say, “I’m a person of faith and a Christian. I believe without seeing.” Well, to tell you the truth, I’m not sure I believe you. “Show me.” “All who believed…had all things in common…and divide[d] them…according to each one’s need.” Reading this passage I can’t help thinking of Social Security. As large numbers of “Boomers” retire and fewer young people enter the work force politicians and pundits alike insist that the present system, under which younger workers put money into Social Security to effectively support older workers with the hope that when these younger workers retire money will be there for them, no longer works. Rather, some so-called ‘experts’ suggest that it would be better for individuals to invest their money and take care of themselves. Let’s go back to Acts. The early Christians (“All who believed…”) “…had all things in common [dividing] them among all according to each one’s need.” There doesn’t seem to be any mention of keeping property and possessions and investing them for one’s own benefit. But maybe I’ve got it all wrong. Maybe Christians just look different today than they did back then. Maybe taking care of one another like they did in the early church really isn’t practical in today’s economic climate. Maybe I should just take people’s word for it when they tell me that they’re Christians – rather than expecting them to “show me…”

Remember Our Parish Now and In the Future

St. Raphael Parish has been built on the faith and sacrifice of many who have gone before us. We are invited to continue building on that foundation by making a commitment to the parish for the future. As you do your estate planning, please remember St. Raphael in your plans. You may want to treat the church as one of your children, or come up with other ways that are consistent with your desires. Gifts from wills and estates are a significant way for us to build up a financial foundation for future needs. It takes planning on our part, though, or it will not happen. Please prayerfully consider remembering St. Raphael the Archangel Parish and other worthy charities in your will.
