INTRODUCTION – PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
As part of St Peter’s Woodlands Grammar School’s funding agreement with the Commonwealth Government,
we are required to ensure specific information is made available to the school community.
What follows is an explicit response to the Commonwealth Government’s requirements under the headings
required by them. The information relates to the 2018 school year. The performance measures which we are
required to publicly report on our school website are listed in the document below.
Our school community is grateful for the assistance from the Government’s National Chaplaincy Program which
supports SPW with funding to maintain the services of our Chaplain, the Rev’d Julia Denny-Dimitriou.
Now in the penultimate year of the current Strategic Plan (2015-2019), the Executive Leadership Team continue
with its implementation. This included investigating the development of a whole school wellness program,
building leadership capacity, implementing a new model of Learning Support, introducing a new model of
student leadership, increasing student agency, developing a mainstream approach to relevant compliance
issues, and completing new communication strategies.
In relation to buildings and grounds, the new nature play area has had an incredible impact on students and
their learning – a wonderful space for our children to wander through, play, and interact with their surroundings.
The Nutter Thomas Building was renovated to now house the Out of School Hours Care facility, with the whole
area revamped and modernised, including the kitchen area, which is now available for class cooking activities.
Children participate in a range of activities, before and after school, and during the holiday breaks. This is now a
multi-purpose area which is also utilised by classes during the day. The Uniform Shop and Canteen undertook
an upgrade at the same time, with the areas now being much more serviceable spaces. Our staff Professional
Learning Centre in the Cudmore Building was completed and is now in full use – another multi-purpose area.
Over 300 solar panels were installed onsite and this has already had a tremendous impact on power savings.
SPW received $80,000 as a State capital grant, and this provided the majority of funding for this project.
A special event, initiated by a group of past Netball School of Excellence players, was held during Term 4. Karen
Whelan, their coach and PE teacher of SPW, passed away suddenly in 2016. In memory of Karen, the Maturin
Road courts are now named the Karen Whelan Courts.
Two reviews were undertaken by the Education Standards Board: one of the Early Learning Centre and the
other of OSHC. It is pleasing to report that both centres met all the required Standards.
2018 was a year rich in service to others, exemplified in the many and varied events organised by our students,
staff, parents/caregivers, SPW Foundation Incorporated and the PFA.
The SPW Foundation Incorporated held its inaugural Foundation Breakfast at the Glenelg Football Club, with
guest speaker Tom Lynch speaking about philanthropic behaviours. $130,000 was contributed to SPW by the
Foundation, which assisted in the establishment of the new nature play area.
Our Parents and Friends Association have continued to support the school in a myriad of ways. We are most
grateful for their contribution of $18,000. These monies went towards the renovation of the OSHC kitchen area
and the learning spaces in the Library. Thank you to everyone in our school community who supported events
including the after school and Saturday morning barbecues, coffee van, raffles, special events (including the
Colour Fun Run and the Seaside Fiesta). Each year the PFA come up with new and innovative ways to support
the school through its fundraising and friendraising.
We are extremely grateful to all who volunteer, in any capacity, within our school community. Your willingness to
contribute your valuable time to SPW shows your commitment to the wellbeing of not only your child but also all
of our students. Thank you.
In closing, I would like to express my appreciation to all the staff for their tireless efforts throughout 2018, to the
parents and caregivers who placed their children in our care, and to the students who are fine ambassadors of
SPW.
2019 will be significant in the life of St Peter’s Woodlands, as we look forward to celebrating 20 years since
blending the rich shared history of Woodlands Church of England Girls Grammar School with the day school of
St Peter’s Glenelg Parish. We draw on the heritage of over 150 years of educational experience whilst looking to
the future to continue creating a modern, innovative environment in which our children can learn and grow.

2. A description of how non-attendance is managed by the school At SPW student attendance of students in Years R-7 is managed through a centralised information
management system. The Early Learning Centre utilises a separate student management system to
enable the school to meet government reporting requirements. Maintaining accurate records is
essential for measuring both student engagement and student non-attendance. Attendance records
are monitored by the Heads of School.
A daily roll is taken by the class teacher, and updated throughout the day by Front Office
administration staff, logging late arrivals and early departures. Reasons for absence are noted in the
centralised system. Students arriving after the beginning of the school day are required to sign in at
the Front Office, and students leaving before the end of the school day are required to be signed out
by an adult.
Parents/Caregivers are asked to report absent students through the Front Office, using one of three
methods – a dedicated email address, our school communication app, or a dedicated absentee
phone line. Parents/caregivers of students who are absent without prior explanation are sent a SMS
message requesting the parent/caregiver contact the school. Absences of more than five consecutive
school days’ duration require approval by the Principal.

5. STUDENT RESULTS IN NAPLAN ANNUAL ASSESSMENTS
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) testing was undertaken in Term 2. This
is a compulsory nationwide program conducted on the same day across Australia. Children in Years 3, 5
and 7 were assessed in the areas of Reading, Writing, Language conventions, and Numeracy. Student
achievement is reported in relation to national minimum standards – either above, at or below the
minimum standard. Individual NAPLAN reports were sent home to parents.
The following table reports the mean results for SPW, compared to SA and Australian mean scores for
each aspect of the NAPLAN tests at Years 3, 5 and 7.

Additional support to children (Learning Support) SPW has responded to the increasing diversity in student populations, as well as ‘living’ a philosophy
(and practice) of inclusion through quality evidence-based teaching practice and programs, personalised
learning, differentiation, easy and open access to technological supports and accommodations, and
importantly, parent engagement and support. SPW has invested heavily in ensuring classroom teachers
are at the forefront of supporting all learners to have equality of access to the curriculum, learning
activities and social opportunities that our school provides with the following resources: Learning Support
team, Heads of School, Education Support Officers, and of course our volunteers. SPW also offers
specific and targeted reading intervention programs for students identified as requiring a more intensive
and higher level of support. We changed our support model to one whereby students participate in
intense literacy groups outside the core day, allowing them continued access to contextual, differentiated
classroom learning. We also facilitate on-site access to allied health support through Speech Pathology,
Occupational Therapy, Psychology and Counselling.
![Page 10: SCH PERFORMANCE REPORT - spw.sa.edu.au · 2019 will be significant in the life of St Peter’s Woodlands, as we look forward to celebrating 20 years since blending the rich shared](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081615/5fd320ed2709093b36569d18/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
6. PARENT, STUDENT & TEACHER SATISFACTION WITH THE
SCHOOL
SPW promotes open and transparent dialogue within its community.
Parents Surveys, including one for OSHC and the Early Learning Centre, were undertaken as part of their
compliancy requirements. Feedback forms are available on the website, via eNews and the Skoolbag
app. Some comments emanating from the surveys include:
‘There is a wide variety of activities’
‘Children have input into their learning’
‘Staff are amazing and caring educators, and develop strong relationships with the children’
‘Children are supported academically, socially and emotionally’
‘There are amazing initiatives, including special guests, practical presentations etc’
‘Teacher:Student ratio is good’
‘The new Seesaw app is a wonderful source of live communication between school and home’
‘SPW is dedicated to updating any learning spaces and maintaining a high level of commitment to
reaching new goals’
Seesaw Student Learning Journals for ELC were launched, allowing parents a real-time glimpse of his or
her child’s day.
SkoolBag, an all-in-one communication tool, messaging system and parent information app, and Qkr!, a
mobile phone pre-payment app which delivers convenience to parents for ordering items from the
Canteen or Uniform Shop) greatly assist parents.
Parents were also invited to participate in events, including:
Getting to Know Your Child meetings prior to commencement of the school year
Student/Parent/Teacher three-way conferences
Secondary Schools Information evening
Parent Forums
Students The Student Services Leadership Council (SSLC) is a group of students that engage with the community
and provide opportunities for student agency. The role of the SSLC is twofold (1) to engage in service
external to the school community by selecting and fundraising for a local charity, and (2) to provide
opportunities for and facilitate student agency in the school community through the running of regular
class meetings.
Teachers Teaching staff have continued with Professional Development sessions building mentor/mentee
relationships. During teaching staff administration meetings, staff join in a Plus, Minus, Interesting (PMI)
session where they can openly provide feedback on any areas of further growth, or success, and then
collaboratively develop solutions to the problems.
