Scent Theory, Hide Placement and Search Design Clinic March 19 & 20 th 2016 PSD Trial on Saturday Raymond, NH With Stacy Barnett and Kate Bigger For instructors, competitors, and judges T his clinic is open to anyone interested in learning more about scent theory, creating a scent picture for the dog, and the designing of scent tests. Stacy Barnett, a Fenzi Dog Sports Academy instructor and Kate Bigger, president of Performance Scent Dogs will be presenting. The canine olfaction system How odor is afected by air currents, weather, and in diferent kinds of containers Designing a scent picture for the dog Understanding how height, multiple hides, converging odors, threshold hides, varying amounts of odor, blank areas, distractions and inaccessible hides can be used to test handler and dog. How to create and store a scent kit Keeping areas free from scent contamination and how to minimize lingering odor Placing hides appropriate for the level and purpose of the class Dealing with unpredictable outcomes during a search Performance Scent Dog rulebook and score sheets The Search Design clinic will give participants a better understanding of how scent moves through different environments and how judges use this information to test dog and handler teams. Instructors and competitors will gain valuable insight on where to place hides to help broaden the dog’s ability to pinpoint scent. Prospective judges will have the opportunity to review rules and scoring with experienced judges. Saturday will take place at a PSD trial where participants will have the unique opportunity to observe dogs working odor and make predictions based on the information on scent theory presented that morning.

Stacy Barnett is an accomplished Nosework trainer and competitor who teaches at the renowned Fenzi Dog Sports Academy. Stacyachieved one of the first NW3 Elite titles put on a dog completely trained using FDSA methods. She and her Labrador, Judd, have earned multiple High In Trials and are always in the ribbons. Stacy has a true passion for scent work and it reflects in both her dogs’ and her students’ performances. Stacy is a compassionate instructor who has successfully coached teams from the very beginningsto Elite competitors worldwide. She is especially strong in Scent Theory and trial preparation and is truly dedicated to making a difference in the teams who work with her. Stacy has a talent for bringing out the best in Nosework teams and is especially adept at working with soft or fragile dogs.

Kate Bigger is the president of Performance Scent Dogs. She is a behavior geek with a deep background in behavior science. She is the senior trainer at the MSPCA in Boston, as well as having her own training company, High Fidelity Dogs. She is a long time agility competitor and coach who became obsessed with the sniffing sports. All of Kate's dogs have been recycled from shelters or breed rescue and have earned multiple agility championships, including Regional and National Finalists. She has helped many students reach beyond what they thought possible with their dogs. Working collaboratively with owners of all kinds of dogs, from shypuppy mill rescues to hyper adolescents, she has coached hundreds of owners on respecting the dog as an individual first. She strives to open up two-way communication from dog to owner and owner to dog which is the very heart of scent work. Kate is in the enviable position of teaching 8-10 scent work classes a week and particularly enjoys the very first six week class where dogs and handlers discover scent work for the first time. Her more advanced classes serve as a learning laboratory where teams play with all sorts of scent work puzzles. She is committed to spreading the gospel of how scent work can help all kinds of dogs and deepen the dog-handler bond.

for a single day) • Register by March 11th $200 for both days ($125 single day) • Registration is limited. • No refunds after March 11. In case of weather cancellation, all fees will be

refunded. • Light lunch and snacks provided, plenty of dining options in the area. • Dogs-this is a non-working seminar. Please leave your dog at home if possible.

For those that must bring dogs, there is ample parking so you may crate dogs in the car. There is no space for indoor crating on Saturday. Quiet dogs may be crated inside on Sunday.

The clinic will take place in a heated training facility that may be chilly. Please be prepared to work outside in New England weather. Bring a chair and notebook.
