by: Natalie Rivard, CCHO Administrator They say that if you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out. But, if it is put in cold water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and save itself. This metaphor is relative to the steady decline in caregivers that we have experienced in long-term care over the years, which is now causing us to deem this issue a work force crisis. However, unlike the frog, we as an organization have been actively advocating for change and now we are asking for your help. Now is the time to be a united front…. In past articles I have touched on the large deficit in government funding, in both assisted livings and nursing homes. The cost of care that is provided is much higher then what is actually reimbursed, we can lose upwards of $60 per day per resident. Nursing homes are subject to a large bed tax which was originally put in place to help fund increases in Medicaid reimbusrement but, by the last bienniel budget, we saw no increase even though costs continue to rise. Unfortinately reimbursement and the work force crisis are directly linked. Direct care workers have high turnover and burnout due to low pay and the difficulty of the job. As an organization we do not find that caregivers are leaving to go to other nursing homes or assisted livings. They are leaving to work at factories, Walmart, gas stations, banks, etc. where they can get paid more and have less demands. For more detailed information on the long-term care work force crisis please go to http://www.leadingagewi.org/ media/34782/Workforce-Report-2016. pdf. This is an understandable and quick read that is a combination of data from 689 long-term care providers in Wisconsin. Wondering how you can help? We have created an easy to fill out postcard that is already addressed to our local Senator, Sheila Harsdorf. The postcards can be filled out by employees, residents, family members or any friends of CCHS. They can be found in the break rooms or at any of the front desks. You can turn in the postcard to any manager or office support staff, and we will stamp it and mail it out for you. Not able to stop in? Live in a different district? Contact your local legislator via email or phone and ask them to support the increase of Medicaid funding for nursing facilities and assisted livings in the upcoming 2017-2019 state budget and that they convey their support to the governor. To find out who your legislators are go to http://maps.legis.wisconsin.gov/ and type in your zip code in the upper right hand corner. If you do not live in WI but still want to make an impact on WI long-term care, simply type in Hudson or Osceola’s zip code (54016 or 54020). In order for change to occur this will truly take a grassroots effort. Every year several CCHS employees go to the capital and contact local legislators to plead our cause and thus far we have not been effective. That is why your help is necessary and important. Foundation Report As 2016 comes to an end, we encourage you to think about ways to sustain the work of CCH by supporting the CCH Foundation.  The CCH Foundation Committee works to enhance the quality of life for the residents and engages in efforts to support the staff in their service to those living in our facilities.  The Foundation support comes in the way of purchasing materials – from furniture to carpeting – that enhance the environment in the buildings.  It comes in the way of equipping staff break rooms with refrigerators, microwaves, and air conditioning.  And it comes in the way of providing a scholarship to a staff member looking to further their career.

Year end is a good time to think about a tax-deductible contribution to the CCH Foundation.  Or, consider leaving a legacy in your will or trust that will benefit residents and programming for years to come.

Thank you for what you do to support the CCH Foundation.

GIFTS & MEMORIALSJUNE 1 - SEPTEMBER 30

A college classmate of mine died recently. While we were never terribly close, we were part of the same social network and had common

interests in music and theatre. She was vibrant, full of life, and kind of kooky. You couldn’t help but like her. The last few years had been a struggle for her and she often publicized her life details on Facebook, which was never comfortable for me. It seemed to me her support came from the amassed “friends” via social media rather than any one present to her “in real life.” And then she went quiet. There have been no posts since the spring. Not long ago a post on my newsfeed stated that she was in hospice. There were no details as to her condition, but it was clear she had come to the end of her earthly life. And so someone created a page dedicated to her and people began to post heartwarming stories of experiences with her, college memories, prayers, and statements about her attributes that made such a difference in people’s lives – loving

testimonies to carry her with tenderness into eternal life.

These statements became a great comfort to her family and gave them strength to move through the last days. I am grateful to the person who

created the page and the opportunity for us to share some compassionate words and funny anecdotes. I wish my classmate had received these messages in the midst of her troubles. I believe she died of a broken heart and gave up the will to live. I pray the words read to her from her wide network of friends helped to heal her brokenness before she passed. I just wish those messages could have encircled her in her time of need, before she drifted into unconsciousness.

Our words hold great power – power to hurt and power to heal. I pray we might all be thoughtful with our words and that we would always choose kindness in the way we speak to one another. Someone’s life may depend on it.

Blessings, Pastor Beth

A BIG thank you to all who donated to our Wheels for Wellness campaign this year. We have 90% of our goal obtained through your donations and the funds collected from our Foundation’s Annual Sunset & Starlight River Cruise! We are shopping for that perfect van so our long- and short-term residents can be transferred to and from their “wellness” appointments. It’s not too late to donate! If you are interested, please contact Shelly DeStasio at 715-381-4203 or go online at www.cchhudson.org for more information!

We would like to welcome Bobi Ombui to our CCHS team. She is the newest member of the Therapeutic Recreation Department at CCH – Hudson!Bobi has

an extensive background in the field of working in the long-term care field. She comes to us from American Heritage in Hammond, WI. Bobi is a natural at leading programs with enthusiasm, energy, compassion, and knowledge. Some of our residents and family members have shared these comments with me. “Bobi is really fun!” “I loved when she gave me marshmallows to throw.” “My husband seems to enjoy her (Bobi’s) programs.”Bobi and her significant other “George” live in River Falls. She has three grown sons and two grandchildren. Some of her hobbies are drawing, reading, exploring, spending time with her family and friends, as well as doing research for programs that she conducts. A fun fact about Bobi is that she sold her original design painted wooden eggs to “Fortham and Mason” in London! That is where the Queen shops!Bobi says, “I love the people here and I also love the gardens and the food.” She says that she enjoys brightening the days of others by providing enthusiasm, pulling legs, along with storytelling/learning.Welcome Bobi! We are glad to have you here at CCH!

CARDS AND GIFTS – Please share with all your families and friends who may send cards or gifts to your resident for the holidays. ACTIVITY ALLEY – HUDSONby Deb Tonsager, Therapeutic Recreation Manager/Music Therapist

Welcome to the cooler weather of the fall season in Hudson, WI. It may be getting a bit chillier outside, but everything is warm and cozy inside at Christian Community Home-Hudson. Residents and staff have been busy with various events to keep spirits high and their hearts and hands warm. This summer residents made lots of raspberry jam and enjoyed some of the fruits of their labor afterwards by having ice cream sundaes with fresh raspberries. We all enjoyed the incredible smell of freshly smashed raspberries while they made some sauce for the topping on their ice cream. Our baking group has been working on making all of the sweet breads that will be sold at the 2016 Craft and Bake Sale that is taking place November 18 & 19. (They are in the process of making several loaves of “gumdrop sprinkles” bread as I type.) I heard from a few taste testers that it is their favorite so far! Yum!In August we enjoyed the weather, food, and competition with our Summer Olympics event. We had participants from Pine Ridge compete with participants from CCH. This time our competition was with three events: archery, ball toss, and discus throw. There was a gril out afterwards and in the afternoon we held the awards ceremony to hand out the ribbons and the medals. We all look forward to our next Summer Olympics in 2020!Everyone was excited to have Audrey Martin back with us to paint again! There was a larger group of participants and they all did an amazing job on their hydrangea paintings! They were beautiful! You can go to our website www.cchhudson.org/ what’s happening/photoalbum to see all their paintings. Audrey will be back soon to lead a class in painting birch trees and fall leaves. In September there was a fantastic celebration for one of our residents. Irene Gonitzke turned 100 in September! We took an unofficial vote and decided that she doesn’t look a day over 80! Neutrogena face lotion is her answer, ladies and gentlemen. At the party we played a game called: “Is this invention older or younger than Irene?” One of the items was a bag of candy corn. Do you know the answer? If you said that it is older than Irene you would be correct. (It was invented in 1911.)Our Annual Oktoberfest was wonderful. The residents and their visitors were entertained by the energizing music from The Squires Band, while cheese filled pretzels were served with an Oktoberfest beer and other goodies.Don’t forget to mark your calendars for November 18 & 19th! We look forward to having a great crowd come to the Craft and Bake Sale again this year. We promise that you won’t leave empty-handed. There is always something for everyone! All proceeds go toward the residents’ entertainment…and they love to be entertained!

Deloris Orf is celebrating with her daughter at the birthday party!

Governor Walker stops to talk with CCH resident Mary Van Allen.

Kitty’s husband Frank presents a check to Dan Cohen, MSW, founding executive director of Music & Memory

“We are all in this together!” was Kitty’s motto, and pictured here L to R is Dan Cohen, Gov. Walker, Frank Rhoades Dan Goodier and the new Health Services Secretary, Linda Seemeyer

CCH-Hudson was honored on Tuesday, September 6th when the family of the late Kitty Rhoades, former Secretary of the WI Department of Health Services, honored her memory with a donation to the Music & MemorySM program. Frank, Kitty’s husband, presented Dan Cohen, executive director and founder of Music & MemorySM, a donation check for $12,400. The Grant was created from the many generous memorial donations received by the Rhoades family. The Grant will benefit more than 100 individuals with dementia who reside in Wisconsin assisted living communities. Kitty was instrumental in bringing Music & Memory to all skilled nursing facilities in WI.

CCH itself became certified in 2014, which was one of the first facilities in our area. Since then, many family members have told us what a difference this program has made for their loved one. Before the ceremony, we were asked to invite Kitty’s family along with Dan Cohen and our very own music therapist, Deb Tonsager, to a private sit-down with some of our residents and their loved ones. This was so Kitty’s family could see and hear firsthand the difference Music & MemorySM makes in the lives of all involved. It allowed the family to see what Kitty knew and believed in wholeheartedly.

The Foundation would like to thank everyone who attended and sponsored our 7th Annual Sunset & Starlight River Cruise Fundraiser this past July! It is because of your generosity and support that we are able to continue our mission to meet the needs of each resident in a way that is both professional and loving, and which offers them security as their needs change through life.

A very special thank you to our sponsors: Reinhart – Attorneys at Law, Community Living Solutions, Osceola Medical Center, Asphalt Associates, Inc., Hudson Hospital & Clinic, J. F Ahern Company & Benck Mechanical. Lastly, a BIG thank you to all of our raffle & silent auction donors. We had over 80 local businesses supporting us! We are so grateful!

PINE RIDGE GARDENSby Brenda Magadanz, Director of Pine Ridge

The residents in Pine Ridge Gardens enjoyed every minute they sat out in the warm summer weather in our beautiful garden. They also enjoyed competing in their own Summer Olympics. It was a great day of everyone cheering each other on during the competitions. It was quite hot outside, so the events had to be moved indoors. The residents who won medals beamed at the award ceremony. Most wore the medals for a few days afterward to bask in the glory. Now that school is back in session, we are looking forward to the students from St. Patrick’s, Hudson Middle School, and the toddlers from the Hudson MOM Group to resume their visits. The residents enjoy playing board games and BINGO with the students, and who doesn’t love to watch toddlers perform!

Well, summer is gone and the cool weather is returning, but we made the most of the nice weather. The residents enjoyed outings to Freedom Park in Prescott for a wonderful picnic. We also had a “mystery outing” which ended up at one of our great CNA staff’s new home for a cookout. The residents loved hearing about how her construction was going and looked at pictures along the way. So we surprised them and they got to see the finished product in person. Just a wonderful example of how our residents and staff become “family.”In August we competed in the CCH/Pine Ridge 2016 Summer Olympics. It was a great day to have some fun competition and enjoy the company of each other. Pine Ridge athletes did well earning medals in each event. But as they say in the actual Olympics – it is not whether you win or lose, it is that you compete. Now we are busy creating items for the craft sale. The residents like to know that they contribute to this important fund raiser for the activities that happen on our campus. Make sure to mark your calendars for November 18 & 19.

ACTIVITY ALLEY – WINTERGREENby Jenny Brazzale, WinterGreen Assistant

WinterGreen residents enjoyed many entertainment opportunities throughout the summer. Every Thursday residents are welcome to go over to CCH for their evening entertainment program, which many take advantage of. The summer Concert in the Garden series was another way to get out and enjoy the campus. In September, WinterGreen resident Jim Sharer put together a wonderful music program right here in the WinterGreen atrium. Jim played many tunes on the grand piano to the delight of the crowd.

We are always lucky to have excellent speakers for our Talk of the Hour program. In July, John Suzukida shared the stories of his parents who were incarcerated in America’s concentration camps during WWII. Coming up, we will have another speaker stop by to talk about downsizing as we age.

There were some wonderful outings that we took over the summer and fall months as well. We made a trip to the movie theater for a showing of the movie Florence Foster Jenkins. We loved our stop at Olive Garden for their delicious soup, salad and breadsticks. We enjoyed a scenic drive in September to the Bonfire restaurant in Woodbury. We also took a lovely trip to Selma’s in Afton for ice cream in which there were so many flavors to choose from that it was hard to decide on just one scoop. Coming up, we are looking forward to some fall color trips, apple orchards and Christmas shopping.

Along with WinterGreen sponsored outings, the residents also like to plan some of their own special trips. Betty Nelson has done a great job of planning extra outings for residents to go on. In July, a group went to the Pierce County Dairy Breakfast. In August, a group went on a pontoon boat cruise sponsored by the non-profit organization Let’s Go Fishing.

Sometimes it’s nice not to have to go anywhere to enjoy each other’s company. Throughout the summer and into fall, WinterGreen residents have planned some great potlucks. There have been close to 60 residents participating in each of the potlucks which have been held out on the deck and in the Garden Room.

The WinterGreen bake sale was another success this fall. The residents were busy baking up some of their favorite treats. There was even homemade bread, fresh out of the oven, for shoppers to purchase.

The bake sale committee was happy to report that all of the baked goods sold out this year and that all of the money will be going to local charities that the Resident Association will vote on in November.

As the CCH Craft & Bake Sale approaches we are getting ready with a few projects of our own. We are working on more wreaths, trees and Christmas scenes for this year’s sale. We have also had fun doing a few crafts for ourselves. The most recent craft was a gratitude jar, and with Thanksgiving approaching, we can all find something to be thankful for.

Warren Pagel and Roger Jewett are all smiles as they enjoy themselves at WinterGreen.

Gertrude Vanda and her granddaughter Rachel show off their patriotic craft along with fellow WinterGreen resident Bernie Gregerson.

Just a few of the items WinterGreen residents are working on for the CCH craft and bake sale.

ACTIVITY ALLEY – OSCEOLA

Written By: Tia Erickson, Therapeutic Recreation/Volunteer Manager

CCHO and Hearthside Assisted Living have been out and about enjoying the great summer weather and local community events! Our beautiful courtyards have raised garden beds producing herbs and veggies! We have made summer salads like tomato/cucumber with a lemon, basil and dill dip. Emily Klapse and her daughter, Jan, helped can our garden peppers, beets, and beans with friends, family and volunteers to sell at the vendor fair in November. Our outdoor pool parties have truly been a big splash! They included twins, Abram and Ascher Pommier, and Ruby Dorr’s great-great grandbaby, TJ.We even had two families bring in their horses for a visit. Florence Christenson is one of many who enjoyed our first horse visit with Betty Aspenson’s family’s horse. Ken Keen’s daughter, Robyn, brought in her horse for a visit and rode it during our Annual Vintage Automobile Show in our front parking lot. Another perfect day was when we went fishing on the St. Croix River!Even our CCHO staff, family members and volunteers have joined in with many special events such as our Casino Party. Wally Bartz volunteered to be our dealer at the Black Jack table during this resident council sponsored Casino with real cash payout!Brita Gallagher, CNA, and her mother performed a great classical concert for all of us to enjoy in our chapel. We even delighted in a spiritual ballet performance with our new cook, Angela Snider’s daughter. They danced their way into our hearts! I hear that there will be repeat performances at our holiday festivities when they will all be back by popular demand in December.
