DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Although I jumped at the opportunity to direct Shrek, the concept of staged concert appeared to be difficult at first. How will the audience know who these characters are without full costume and makeup? How will these production numbers land without full choreography? Every show has it’s hurdles, but it was evident in the beginning of the process, that the actors are so extremely talented and “have so many layers,” that none of these typical production values are needed. Put simply, these students are brilliant. They do not need to hide behind sets or other production elements. This has been an extremely collaborative process. We have seasoned musical theatre actors as well as some who have never done a show before. As an educator, I feel like the amount of learning that occurred is the most important part of the project, however you are in for a tremendous show!

Thank you to my Stage Manager Amber Caras for helping to steer the ship and for making all of the special Shrek hats from scratch. Lynn who not only created great costumes, but is so fun and inspiring in the process. And of course, Tim, Mike and Kent McFann for all of their support! There couldn’t be a better way to spend the summer than by getting the opportunity to work with all of these amazing people.
