Dame Maggie Smith

dame Maggie has been working her high-drama austere tragicomedy magic for over sixty years now - and the standing ovations just keep coming. Only two months ago – Age

78 – she bagged her third Primetime Emmy Award - for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of the sharp-tongued Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham in ITV1’s hit costume-drama Downton Abbey. She won one in 2011 too – for playing the same role. Downton Abbey (created by Julian Fellows) reportedly pulls in more Sunday night viewers than the X-Factor results show.

While some might argue Dame Maggie is not only fit for primetime viewing but in fact ‘in her prime’, busy demonstrating what it is to be a living legend (The Stage Director Peter Hall famously said “Maggie could pack out a theatre even if she was reciting a telephone directory”) by contrast the ever self-deprecating Maggie was quoted in the Ilford Recorder in 2010: “I am just surprised to be doing anything at my age actually. When you think of where I am now and where I’ve come from, I am very pleased and very grateful to be standing up and delivering Julian’s great lines… This is the third old lady I’ve played for him, so I am getting the hang of it now!”

Maggie was born Margaret Nathalie Smith on 28 December 1934 in Ilford, Essex and lived there during her early years - surely making her the world’s most famous Essex Girl? She has no recollection of Essex though. Age four, at the outbreak of the war, she was whisked away to Oxford by her Scottish Mother (Margaret Hutton Little) and Geordie Father (Nathaniel Smith), along with her 6 year elder twin brothers (Ian and Alistair). Her father had secured a post as a pathologist at Oxford University. Her mother worked as a secretary. Maggie went on to attend the

Oxford High School for Girls and despite her brothers’ considerable academic achievements (both went on to become successful architects) Maggie barely scraped through her O-level exams and age 16, quit school and enrolled in drama school instead. Rumor has it she had aspirations to attend RADA but Maggie’s parents insisted she remain in Oxford. They were bewildered by her choices - there was no history of acting in the family, Maggie had never attended the theatre and films were frowned upon - but Maggie instinctively knew what she wanted to do.

She joined The Oxford Playhouse School in 1951 and one year later, made her first ‘serious’ stage debut when she performed in the Oxford University Dramatic Society’s Twelfth Night. Performances at the Edinburgh Fringe followed and Maggie made her London stage debut in Oxford Accents at the New Watergate – and Broadway debut in the New Faces ’56 Revue at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre; to great comic acclaim. Maggie commented in a rare interview in the Guardian in 2004: “But that was comedy and if you do comedy, you kind of don’t count. Comedy is never considered the real thing.” She went on to join the Old Vic - leading eventually to The National Theatre where, in the 60s, she played lead roles in weighty productions, most notably Desdemona in Othello opposite Laurence Olivier. Theatre has always been Maggie’s true calling, she says she feels most at peace acting in the theatre and has always returned to tread the boards to rave reviews, winning a Tony Award in 1990 starring in Peter Shaffer’s Lettice and Lovage and picking up a Laurence Olivier ‘Special’ Award just two years ago, in 2010 – but Maggie has also achieved phenomenal screen success.

In 1958 Maggie received her first BAFTA nomination for playing Bridget Howard in the crime drama Nowhere To Go. In 1963 she starred as Miss Mead in The VIPs

Winner of two oscars, seven bAfTAs, two Golden Globes, three emmys, a Tony, a Laurence olivier Award plus countless more award nominations and prestigious stage and

screen accolades; a dame Commander of the order of the british empire since 1990 - Ladies and Gentlemen, please be standing for the formidable dame maggie Smith.

along with an all-star cast including Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton - and said hello to her first Golden Globe nomination. In 1965 she starred in the screen adaptation of Othello, again opposite Olivier. He apparently vowed to never work with her again after that. For her on-screen performance, she received Academy and Golden Globe Award nominations. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie came about in 1969. Cast as the un-orthodox teacher at an Edinburgh girls’ school, Maggie’s impeccable performance clinched her the Oscar this time around. Then in 1978 came the film California Suite: a comedy telling four separate stories from four different rooms in a Beverley Hills hotel in which Maggie starred opposite Sir Michael Caine and alongside Jane Fonda. Ironically, she played the part of Diana Barrie: a highly charged actress who loses out on Oscar night – her performance netting her Oscar number two.

For the Harry Potter films, apparently it was JK Rowling herself who nominated Dame Maggie to play the part of the stern, shape-shifting Professor Minerva McGonagle - And who better? Maggie went on to star in seven of the eight block-buster films, exposing her

to her biggest audience yet and earning her a whole new generation of fans. However it is in 2001 – the same year as the screening of the first Potter film (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) that Maggie turned in what is widely considered her greatest on-screen performance playing Constance, the indelible Countess of Trentham in the film Gosford Park - also created by Julian Fellows, directed by Robert Altman. Maggie outshone an all-star cast in this upstairs downstairs 1930s period drama, including Helen Mirren and Kristin Scott Thomas - and she was duly rewarded with BAFTA, Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. There was another Oscar nomination for her star turn in A Room with a View (1985) and a BAFTA for her lead role in The Lonely Passion Of Judith Hearne (1987). She drew great acclaim for her performance in Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads monologues in 1988 too. Quite honestly, Maggie’s achievements are too numerous to mention - bringing to mind a classic Dowager Countess of Grantham quote: “Don’t be defeatist dear, it’s very middle class”! The real Maggie has a fierce reputation – perhaps this is the kind of withering put-down we might expect from her too? She admitted to the Guardian: “It’s true I don’t tolerate fools but then they don’t

Page 18: SCENE (Essex) November 12

18 SCENE

tolerate me, so I am spiky. Maybe that’s why I’m quite good at playing spiky elderly ladies.” But Dame Maggie is so much more than ‘quite good’.

Julian Fellows was quoted in The Ilford Recorder: “Maggie Smith has a unique sense of comedy, based on a somewhat ironic view of real life, making it both funnier and more sad. But perhaps her greatest ability, or at least the one that most intrigues me, is how she can convey deep and powerful emotion without a trace of sentimentality.” One thing is certain - Maggie’s outstanding performances would not be possible without an enormous capacity for empathy. No stranger to life-trials or heartache, Maggie was quoted in the Guardian on the subject of her father: “There was an incredible nervousness about him. You couldn’t do this, couldn’t do that. Mustn’t ride a bike, you’d be bound to fall off. Couldn’t swim, you’d most certainly drown.” She said this embedded “an expectation of imminent disaster” in her as a child. Is it a co-incidence that characteristically, Maggie works on the anxious side of laughter? She has also fought off breast cancer, quietly battled with the debilitating Graves disease and not least, loved and lost – twice.

Maggie met playwright Beverley Cross (“Bev”) when she was just 18 whilst performing at the Oxford Playhouse. He was “a bit older” and “lovely” and already married. Bev proposed to her anyway and Maggie agreed to marry him when his divorce came through – little knowing that in the meantime, she would meet and fall in love with fellow National actor Robert Stephens, who she married in 1967 and had two sons

by (Chris & Toby). But the marriage wasn’t to endure. Robert struggled with his career - quite the opposite of Maggie - and turned to alcohol for consolation. Maggie confided in The Guardian: “I remember when he was diagnosed as hyper-manic asking what it meant and the doctor saying violent moods swings and indiscriminate sexual activity. And I thought ‘that about covers it really’… I said ‘It can’t go on’ and he said ‘No, it can’t.’ Honestly, I don’t think I could have mattered less to him by then. But by then, nothing mattered to him.” The couple separated in 1973 but happiness followed – in the form of Bev – again. In 1975 the couple married and left for Ontario, Canada to start afresh where Maggie worked for five years. Bev assumed the role of father to her children and she spent the next 23 years of her life with him. Robert, whom Maggie claims she never stopped loving despite everything, died in 1995 of an alcohol-related disease. The ‘lovely Bev’ died of heart disease in 1998. Perhaps in Maggie’s pain, therein lies her brilliance?

Not one to believe or even read her own press and rarely one to give interviews (“It’s just that as you talk, one thinks, ‘God, it’s really rather dull”), Playwright Alan Bennett once said of Maggie’s few harsh critics: “She takes little notice of it herself… but those people who condescend her should consider themselves lucky to be living in her time.” Quite right. Dame Maggie Smith, we salute you.

Bonding & Contouring

Cosmetic bonding is a non-invasive technique where tooth coloured adhesive materials are used to close spaces and repair chipped/broken teeth. This treatment demands a high level of artistic skill and knowledge of latest techniques to produce a natural and aesthetically pleasing result.

Teeth Whitening

Many patients who are happy with their own teeth may just want to have their smile ‘rejuvenated’ with a course of professional teeth whitening. This is a safe and popular treatment with a long history of success. Teeth whitening is a very effective treatment for staining and yellowing of teeth, with results seen within weeks.

There have been recent changes in the law outlining strict regulations for the practice of teeth whitening. The new legislation will allow teeth whitening only to be performed by suitably trained dental professionals using approved materials to ensure the safe treatment of the public.

Cosmetic contouring is a simple and painless process where teeth are polished to ‘soften’ their appearance and bring teeth into line.

“there are now legal guidelines and regulations for the practice of safe tooth whitening”

DENTALKINDWith healthy teeth in mind, think...

Cosmetic dental treatments allow everyone to have a beautiful smile. Sadly, there are misconceptions with this area of dentistry resulting in people avoiding treatment,

for example the belief that cosmetic dentistry is expensive and requires a lot of drilling. However, with recent advances in dentistry a smile makeover can be performed with greater ease, less cost and most importantly – minimal or no drilling!

When considering cosmetic dentistry, it is important to remember that the best dentistry is the least invasive dentistry. We all value good health, so it is best to consider treatments that are conservative like our DentalKind makeover options.

“The best dentistry is the least invasive dentistry”

three simple treatment options:

1. Teeth Alignment – straightening any crowded or spaced teeth2. Whitening – the safest and fastest way to improve your smile3. Bonding & Contouring – where changes are made to the shape of teeth by polishing and/or addition of tooth coloured materials

Teeth Alignment

Orthodontic treatment is now much easier to perform and a widely accepted treatment for all ages.

Using modern techniques like the Inman Aligner, Invisalign and 6 Month Smiles we can now straighten teeth discreetly and comfortably within months. This allows patients to confidently transform their smiles with minimal interruption to their day-to-day lives.

Deck the Halls

When we think about yuletide interior touches, everybody has a personal approach to how they should look. Shops are packed full of ideas and decorations.

The urge to buy, buy, buy year after year can lead to an explosion of Christmas decorations that we no longer want or succumb to decorating with the lot. Expressions such as ‘OTT’ and ‘TACKY’ begin to appear in our vocabulary.

Often, less is more. Opt for elegance, rather than overkill and rethink the way you display classic Christmas tree decorations. So let’s get all posh and deck the halls with some thoughts for your interior decoration this Christmas.

TWINKLE, TWINKLE

Create a magical white scheme with a fairytale feel. Use silver candlesticks, cut-glass goblets, white birds and crystal animals. Make sure the table sparkles as much as the conversation by dotting it with twinkling silver confetti, or crystals.

String beads on a bracelet-length piece of fine elastic and wrap twice around a napkin for your guests to take home. Or just simply buy cut lengths of threaded beads and drape over the table. Go to crystal heaven with pretty hanging decorations in all shapes and sizes. Stick to silver and glass for a sophisticated yuletide look.

As winter draws nearer, many of us start to plan the festive season. We explain how you can create elegant Christmas interiors.

geT your home ready for ChrisTmas

Page 37: SCENE (Essex) November 12

SCENE 37

FOLIAGE FAVOURITES

Buy three small Christmas trees, pot them in glass bowls and display them together to emphasis a modern glamorous combination. Go all fruity and lavish your home with seasonal plants, red and orange berries, green foliage and golden yellow petals. Carry on the same theme and buy fake fruit like red grapes, apples, fir cones, twigs of berries and red baubles. This looks really good. Or just simply buy lime green baubles to decorate the tree, topped off with a ribbon draped around.

DON’T FORGET THE LIGHTS

Set the festive scene with magical Christmas lights that’ll add a touch of sparkle to any room. Drape lights over your banister to light up the stairway, or adorn the full set inside a large glass bowl for a spot of creativeness. Buy a large plastic tub that you can see through for your Christmas tree and stuff lights down the side to add a night time glow.

WHAT ABOUT THE CANDLES

Make a wave of candlelight along the full length of your dining table using pillar candles in increasing sizes to form a crescendo of light. Pamper your scenes and get cosy with sweet smelling tea lights scattered around a

seasonal room.

HANG IN THERE

For an alternative window decoration, hang a crystal drop curtain at the window or over the mantelpiece to bounce glittering light around the room. Turn Christmas cards into a stylish feature by suspending them on different lengths of silver twine, and weighing down each string with a sparkling decoration to reflect sunlight or candlelight. Buy large oversized baubles and hang them outside for a bright welcoming touch. Hang smaller baubles around ceiling lights or display a selection in an interesting corner. Large amounts of baubles also look good in a reflective tray or glass bowls.

LET’S WRAP UP

Give your presents a unique touch this year. Wrap them in white doily paper laid over coloured paper, topped off with silver twine and a small Christmas decoration. Alternatively, wrap gifts in plain material and brown paper adorned with fabric flowers and pretty crystals beads.

AND FINALLY

Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy yourself.

65% of professionals believe they thrive in a more comfortable and exciting working environment and the range of office chairs at Cult Furniture is all about attaining that smarter and more sophisticated workspace.

The use of classic reproductions of both Eames office chairs and Mies van der Rohe office chairs, makes for a colourful and vibrant working environment - just the sort of atmosphere that modern professionals look for in an office.

This autumn, vintage trends look set to continue and the team at Cult Furniture has put in place a number of special offers in order to help businesses and households to improve their interior design and indulge their soft spot for the classic twist in design.Alongside fabulous collections of furniture, visitors to the website will also find lighting, art and accessories aimed at cementing that vintage look.

vintage style is all the rage at the moment and members of the public seem to be in midst of a real love affair with classic designs. This is something which is evident

not just in the way people dress, but also in the way people socialise, the places they choose to pass the time, the films they watch, the music they listen to and, of course, the way they decorate their homes and workplaces.

In order to keep pace with the public’s fondness for all things vintage, online furniture retailer Cult Furniture has introduced a few exciting new additions to its store, particularly in the category of side chairs and office chairs.

A whole host of vintage and industrial styles can now be found by visiting the website, where classic reproductions are available at excellent prices. Among the side chairs currently on offer are instantly recognisable pieces of furniture that capture the invention and creativity of designers like Xavier Pauchard, Eames and Hans J Wegner. The vintage furniture range includes side chairs that are all about helping homemakers make a cool statement and satisfy their love of vintage fashion. Eames, Xavier Pauchard and Hans J Wegner are all design houses whose wares have become staple features of the vintage approach to interior design.

These stunning designs have also influenced the collection of excellent quality reproduction office chairs currently available at www.cultfurniture.com. A recent survey by DeVono, a London based property developer, suggested that more than

Its seems for a time many people threw up their hands in horror at the idea of matching red wine with fish. However, we are becoming more adventurous with wine & food matching and realise how often you can pair the two. When the fish is meaty. If that doesn’t sound a contradiction in terms! Tuna is an obvious example, Swordfish, Monkfish or Swordfish fall into the category and can take a light to medium weight wine.

If you wanted to try a red wine why not try a bottle of cru Beaujolais like a Fleurie slightly chilled before serving to go with the Halibut recipe!

TINPOT HUT SAUVIGNON BLANC 2011 - £11.99The Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2011 has lifted aromas of lemon grass and thyme with passion fruit notes. A complex, gob smacking palate that shines through with underlying ripe fruit and mineral notes. A pleasingly powerful wine with well-balanced acidity and a long lingering finish that will compliment the pan-fried Halibut lemon fish cream sauce.

DOMAINE ROCHE FLEURIE 2010 - £14.99Attractive, youthful purple-edged ruby colour with impactful aromas of strawberry crumble, boysenberry, blueberry pie and pipe tobacco. Dry, youthfully fruity with a bright acidity bringing refreshment, and lovely late-palate balance. If red wine were not to your fancy then a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region would do the trick

Wiesmann Racing GT, it has been tested under the toughest of conditions, such as the 24 hour race on Nuerburgring, and is driven by the sheer power of a BMW V8 engine. The result is a technical innovation that has been incorporated in all the Wiesmann models which followed the GT MF4: the GT’s aluminium chassis. It’s a groundbreaking development in sports car construction which provides the coupé with incredible driving dynamics despite a low overall weight of 1280 kilograms.

Thanks to this low weight, the responsive BMW V8 engine with 367 hp (270 kW) delivers absolutely incredible acceleration of zero to 100 km/h in only 4.6 seconds. At a maximum speed of 290 km/h, the road becomes its arena. Not enough? Wiesmann has actually surpassed this with a new engine variant that is even more dynamic and will be available as of 2010. It’s a high-revving 4 litre V8 engine with 420 hp (309 kW). The Wiesmann GT MF4-S is available with manual or double-clutch transmission and can accelerate from zero to its maximum speed of 300 km/h in an impressive 4.4 seconds. With a power-to-weight ratio of 3.4 kg/hp and 3.1 kg/hp respectively, the GT MF4 and GT MF4-S coupés are among the top-ranking high-performance sports cars. Externally the brand new GT MF4-S differs in some design details from the GT MF-4. The rear shows a speed dependent slide out wing and the front part standard bi-xenon headlamps.

The Wiesmann GT MF4 isn’t just a pleasure to drive on the race track, it’s also uncompromising, purist and extraordinary powerful on the road. It is equipped with a dual stage driver and passenger airbag and is available in a left and right-hand drive version. Every detail of the car’s visual appearance, engine power and driving dynamics are synthesised with breathtaking effect. The car’s exterior and interior are equally prestigious and beholders often disagree on what is more fascinating - the design or the power behind it. However, they do agree on one thing: it’s a genuine Wiesmann.

that you do.

accolade for your past and present work. You

are worthy of far more, yet still remain in the pits of

despair. Take that leap of faith. It is all out there if only

you knew it.

tall and be appreciated for who you are. The change

of circumstances will be seen by you as a gift from the

Almighty and you won’t be far wrong.
