make a decision, implement it, and

experience its consequences all within

the same exercise

Accelerating community building or bonding between

people and improving morale

Static Scenarios

• Scripted or videos

• Does not change

• Provides content

• May show common pitfalls

• If utilized to show pitfalls, always also demonstrate correct practice

Open-Ended Scenarios

• Portions are scripted, but unresolved

• May have attendees intervene at different points in the scenario

• Skills practiced are definitive and measurable

Comprehensive Scenarios

• Least scripted, most improvisational

How do I start utilizing scenario based training?

For new staff:

• Identify protocols and procedures and then find/build a rubric to measure skills.

• Write static scenarios designed to highlight pitfalls, open-ended scenarios to practice individual skills, and comprehensive scenarios to bring it all together.

For experienced staff:

• Have each of them write down their ‘nightmare’ scenarios.

• Review them with staff, getting specific about skills/learning could make this less of a nightmare.

• Coordinate/develop training based on what skills they identify which would be helpful in this scenario utilizing the written out scenarios within the training.
