Dear Readers,

As the World is experiencing unprecedented events in the context of the Covid-19 outbreak, ourChamber is closely following the developments, especially in Turkey and in Switzerland, and hasbeen trying to provide members as much information as available. In these difficult times, we believe indeed that one of the most precious assets for entrepreneurs isto be able to reach accurate information on the current situation, so as to be able to anticipate howbusiness continuity can be ensured.

Since our members could not gather physically to share their experience and knowledge in thecurrent context, we have launched in the course of March series of informative webinars focusing onvarious topics affecting the business life in Turkey. So far, we have hosted (or co-hosted with S-GEand the Swiss Business Hub Turkey) not less than 12 webinars, addressing issues such asemployment, contracts, taxes, customs, economic outlook, trade, investments and healthcare. Ourtarget is to continue on the same trend, with further informative events touching upon themes andfurther updates on the impact of the pandemic on the Turkish and the global economy.

In order to further increase the support of our Chamber and strengthen the cooperation betweenour members, I would specifically like to remind that our Chamber is welcoming any suggestions orrequests for information, knowledge and expertise sharing. We would be more than happy to haveyou on board to organize webinars, share your expertise or address particular issues affecting yourindustry. Our team remains at your entire disposal in this respect.

INTERVIEW

Ms Natasa Klicko, tell us a little bit about yourbackground.I was born and raised in Croatia and I gained my MDdegree in University of Zagreb.Since the very beginning of my career, I worked invarious positions in different global pharma companiesand had the chance to have a wide experience indiversified therapy areas as well as other lines ofpharmaceutical business such as OTC and genericsbusiness. These were all great experiences. However,as a medical doctor, patient centricity and improvingpatients’ lives have always been a passion to me and Ieventually realized that what really made me tick waspatient focused innovation-driven pharma. In this aspect, Roche’s vision and priorities and mysense of purpose matches very well. What attractedme to Roche was not the fact that Roche is the largestbiotech company in the world or its amazing portfolioor the strongest pipeline, even though that is definitelya welcomed advantage; what fascinated me aboutRoche was this palpable sense of purpose andinsatiable passion for innovation in every aspect of thework. And I have been working with Roche since 2016and leading Roche Pharma Turkey’s operations sinceMay 2019.

What is your impression of Turkey and the Turkishmarket so far?I can say that Turkey is a really amazing and inspiringcountry in every aspect. Its unique geographical andhistorical structure really impresses me. Also, peopleare very warm to newcomers, and this makes mealways feel like I am at home.Especially in Istanbul where it melts the pot of manycivilizations, I feel like I am in an open air museumembracing an extraordinary history. The country also has very challenging things andopportunities in business at the same time.

Turkey is an ideal investment destination by its allcharacteristics of a modern, successful, liberal marketeconomy. I believe that the pharmaceutical industrycreates value by innovative approaches and can leadthe way in helping Turkey’s goals by emphasizing itspotential and importance.

The Turkish Government’s 2023 vision and Turkey’s“Health Care Transformation Program” that wasimplemented in 2004 remark pharma industry as oneof the strategic sectors in the country. With itsadvanced healthcare system and strategic geographiclocation, Turkey has a great advantage in becoming anintegral part of the global health services industry. Andto meet the goal of becoming a leader in the healthservices by 2023, innovation and R&D needs to beprioritized. At Roche, as the biggest pharma R&Dinvestor in the world, we believe in the power of R&D.Finding innovative solutions for unmet medical needsis at the heart of what we do. In this sense I canunderline that our vision is matching the healthcareenvironment of Turkey.

According to AIFD’s (Association of Research-BasedPharmaceutical Companies) data on the current state ofTurkey’s pharmaceutical market, shows that thepharmaceutical industry transmits more of its incomecompared to other sectors into R&D. R&D investments inthe pharmaceutical industry make up 15% of totalrevenues. The pharmaceutical industry is in front ofinformation technologies where the same ratio is 10.6%and automotive industries where it is 5.9%.I strongly believe as a global pharma giant, we willsupport Turkey’s 2023 vision and HealthcareTransformation aims, by our commitment to innovation.

Name us three extraordinary things about RocheTurkey?Roche is the largest biotech company in the world, globalleader in cancer treatment and in vitro diagnostics and apioneer in personalized healthcare. Both globally and inTurkey, our purpose is very clear – to deliver betteroutcomes for patients faster.

One of the best things about Roche Turkey is the speed inbringing value for many patients and their beloved ones. This is a huge responsibility and it requires a strong senseof urgency because having access to that new technologyor a new treatment option, is a matter of life for most ofour patients. The other important thing is a palpable connection withthe purpose we pursue. All we do and all our decisionsare focused around the center of our purpose – ‘ThePatient’. Roche develops innovative medicines anddiagnostic tests to help millions of patients globally.Regardless of the product we are working on, our focus isthe impact we create on people's lives.I still think about what one of the breast cancer patientsmentioned in one of our company meetings – ‘you arenot bringing drugs in those boxes, you bring hope’. That iswhy we work driven by the passion to bring that hope topatients and their families faster than ever before; wechange the way we work as we don’t want to ever standin front of a patient explaining that we could not bringthe treatment that can really benefit them just becauseof our internal barriers.

Last but not least, we experienced that collaborationachieves the best outcomes for patients. We can bringone part of the solution, but by working jointly with otherstakeholders we can make a better impact on society andcontribute to sustainability of healthcare. We are open tonew ideas and working in collaboration with thehealthcare ecosystem and our partners are the key toresolving critical barriers to better outcomes. We see thatco-creation is a priceless key to increase value for allthrough transparent dialogue and continuous feedbackwhich will lead us to get better outcomes on our way tosuccess.

What is the biggest challenge Roche Turkey is facing inTurkey?I can say that, in Turkey, we are facing delays in access tomedicines that are in use in EU and US. The affordabilityissues that vary by countries and the currency rates canbe listed at the top of the challenges that pharmaceuticalcompanies are facing both in Turkey and the internationalmarkets. However, in the face of this situation, we are workingwith all partners in the healthcare system, includingregulatory bodies, policy makers, payers and healthcareprofessionals to find solutions. We all have the commongoal of ensuring the right patients are on the rightmedicines at the right time.

What are the gains?Turkey has a dynamic geography and a society. Thisallows us to adapt very quickly to transformation andchange. Turkish people are very innovative, and theyadapt easily to new situations and innovations. I trulybelieve that this is a very hardworking society. When compared to other countries, I would like to saythat Turkey has a well-developed healthcare system, withstate-of-the-art medical facilities and highly qualifiedpersonnel. Some treatments reach patients much earlierthan other countries. In this sense, we believe thepotential of the country for better healthcare value in thecoming days.

What future plans does Roche Turkey hold and what arethe upcoming projects?Healthcare demands are increasing, and it is essentialthat we, as Roche, do our part of the solution. So, we’relooking at the entire health ecosystem to identifyopportunities to prevent disease, improve human healthand also reduce inefficiencies in the system. With our combined strength in pharmaceuticals anddiagnostics, we are better equipped than any othercompany to further drive personalised healthcare.

Personalised healthcare will provide healthcareprofessionals with more powerful diagnostic tools andtargeted treatments based upon new insights aboutmolecular markers that allow a more precisedetermination of the risk of certain diseases as well asdrug efficacy and safety. Rapid advances in medicalknowledge, data science and technology mean morepersonalised forms of treatment are possible even todayand will continue to grow in potential in the future. We believe that working together can make a sustainableimpact on society. It is certain that connecting, sharingand communicating with all healthcare partners willgenerate a synergy that will lead us to success. We aresure that co-creation is a priceless key to increase betteroutcomes. Therefore, we are transforming the way wework in order to get more co-creation and collaborationwith our stakeholders. So, we believe we will be able tohelp to build efficient, sustainable healthcare systems forthe future.

Is there anything else you would like to add that wouldbe of interest to our SCCT newsletter readers?Along with the entire world, we have been continuing ourfight against the COVID-19 pandemic also in Turkey.

Since the beginning of this hard period, we are showinggreat efforts to deliver the right diagnosis and treatmentto the patients on time by acknowledging ‘patient andcommunity health” as our top priority regardless of thecircumstances.Since the very beginning of this period, we are at theforefront of an unprecedented collaboration not onlywith the healthcare authorities but also with the overallindustry. Although the period that we are experiencing isnot an easy one, I’m glad to see that it brought us alltogether and strengthened us during the fight against thepandemic. We are following all the developments precisely andtaking necessary actions by working in close contact withthe healthcare authorities to support this fight.I believe that we will get over these hard times with thesupport that we give each other, and I wish everyonehealthy days ahead.

What role does the Chamber of Commerce play in yourbusiness life?Networking plays a more important role in leading theway to success, in today’s business world. By networking, you get to know others in your community, developpartnerships, and support other businesses. You have thechance to become better connected with the markets, resources and businesspeople to improve value, visibilityand credibility, and to share news, ideas and bestpractices. From this point of view, for me the top benefitof being a member of the Chamber of Commerce isnetworking.

Thank you for clustering all these diverse industries underone roof.
