From the President “Time please Ladies and Gentlemen” That time was “necessary to prevent everything occurring at once” is a phase attributed to Einstein. Nothing illustrates his theory of relativity better than the fact that despite the existence (invention) of time everything still happens at once. Particularly at the Sporting Car Club of South Australia. To continue with the clichés “As time waits for no man (or woman)” I found myself in the midst of a conciliation hearing when the mobile phone rang. Thankfully for my professional existence I had taken myself to the rest room during a break in the process – and my hands were free. (A reflection of my paranoia about the new mobile phone use laws not what might or might not have been happening at the time.) The caller was a concerned valued member of the Club outlining a debate then occurring on the radio about hoon drivers, speedways and the means to address them. As “time was passing”, I pointed out that I couldn’t get to the radio or be involved in a debate and invited the member to get on the radio as an ordinary citizen and say what they thought should happen and mention the Sporting Car Club in dispatches. Rightly they said they didn’t know the policy of the Club. Equally rightly I said they were only mentioning the Club and why not speak as a citizen? Without explaining my predicament because of the “shortage of time” I committed to try and get the transcripts and follow up in “a timely manner”. Whilst this is a shortened account of the exchange, it is presented as “a timely example” of “time management” demands on a President. I did follow up the discussion when I got out of the courts, by which time the debate had moved on and the “time had passed.” My contact details were taken and I was invited to keep listening and “call in at another time “– “if I had the time.” The import of the story is that whilst the cliché says it is a good thing to “give a job to a busy person and it will get done”, it isn’t always “the right time” to do so. Extrapolating, as we are having elections and asking members to vote, I urge members to consider the commitment the candidate can make to the Club; the Club does need able and “time richer” persons than I to keep it going. Ask the question of the member as you vote – not only “are you capable - but are you able?” Michael Keenan President Thanks to Glenda Grove I would like to say a BIG thank you to Glenda Grove who has carried out the role, on a volunteer basis, as the Club’s Function’s Co-ordinator for the last five years or more. Unfortunately Glenda has decided not to continue in this position and I will take over the role entirely. Over the last twelve months I have worked closely with Glenda to update and streamline the processes we go through in running functions and events at the Sporting Car Club. Glenda has performed these duties in a very professional manner and has developed a great rapport with a wide range of customers and has been a wonderful ambassador for the SCCSA. This was acknowledged by the Club when she was awarded the Eldred Norman Trophy in 2007 for her volunteer work. All is not lost though!! Glenda will continue her support in being a part of the “Dad’s Army” group and has assured me she is always available to assist in any special projects. Library News There was a time in the 1950s and 1960s when New Zealand drivers and mechanics were keenly sought after world wide in all Formulas and F1. We saw them and met them during the Tasman Series. They were very skilled and extremely versatile and could turn their hands to anything. The drivers were good mechanics and the mechanics were good drivers. It could be said that for a country of not much more than three million people (then), they “punched well above their weight”. Names like, World Champion Denny Hulme, Can Am Champion, car design genius and frequent F1 pole sitter, Bruce McLaren who spent two years in hospital as a boy unable to walk, one the fastest of the era, Chris Amon, and many others including Howden Ganley, Tom Clark, Syd and Ross Jensen, Ron Roycroft, Tony Shelley and Jim Palmer amongst others. Then there were the mechanics, probably the best known being Phil Kerr, Roy Billington and Tyler Alexander. The exploits of all these live on through many books in our Library. Phil Kerr has written “TO FINISH FIRST” which is a great insight into the era when sponsorship was just becoming necessary and accepted. There are several books on Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme is well covered and there is a book on Ron Roycroft and the well known “FORZA AMON”. Prolific author Eoin Young, being a Kiwi also covers them well. Today there is Indy Champ Scott Dixon, World Touring Car Champion Paul Radisich, Bathurst ace Greg Murphy, and fellow V8 drivers Shane van Gisbergen, Fabian Coulthard, Jason Richards and others including Jim Richards and son Steven who we like to call our own. Then there are the Stone Brothers, also extraordinary Kiwi mechanics. FOR SALE: We have bound copies of English MOTORSPORT of 1949, 1950 1951 available. Classic News Past events The Classic Section AGM was held on July 3. Andy Morgan is now Chairman with a carryover committee all but one. Jon Lange has stood down and many thanks to Jon for his support. Continuing are Secretary Allen Morris and committee members Mike Bowen, Ian Patrick, Neil Francis, Jason Rowley, Brian Edwards, Don Plant and Gordon Taylor. We also welcome new committee members Brian Sullivan and Dean Clough. Congratulations to all recipients and thanks to President Michael Keenan for his attendance. Coming Meetings Friday 7 August will be our fabulous Rolls Royce night. We will have on display two wonderful examples of the marque and interesting speakers. Of course supper will be appropriate. The weather and the venue will be fabulous and all club sections are invited. Stay tuned for more information. Cruising Classics. The events leading up to the Bay to Birdwood Classic. The Classic Section have organized a run on the Friday 25th September which is before the Bay to Birdwood on Sunday 27th. All members are welcome to attend as many other clubs join in these events including several interstate visitors. It will be a great day and entry forms will be available soon. LOBETHAL GRAND CARNIVAL 2009 - UPDATE CARS: As at June 30th, we have a full field of cars (that is 100 entrants) but we will continue to accept entries on the understanding that they are RESERVES which can be elevated if the car is of exceptional provenance, or if we have withdrawals. We are also assessing the field capacity and may be able to extend the total numbers of cars on track. BIKES: Entries are still being received and another 15 or so are needed to get us to a 50 bike field. If you have pre-1962 competition bike connections, the Event Co-ordinator, Dee McLean (0402 454 576) would love to know. VOLUNTEERS: We are still seeking volunteers across a wide range of tasks for this vital Club event which in 2008 contributed $15,000 to the Sporting Car Club. Continued financial gain to the Club is dependent almost entirely on the Club contributing volunteers to this outstanding event. Approximately 200 volunteers are required for each day (October 3rd and 4th) and those members wishing to get up close and personal with Lobethal are asked to contact the Events Office: Penny Gordon (8271 5689 or 0408 842 363) or Sandra Brooker (8373 4899) at the Club reception. The lead time for volunteers is important for many of the tasks where briefing and training may be required so please consider involvement now! You will have a great time and in 2009, the event is the week after Bay to Birdwood and the weekend before Bathurst. VINTAGE AIRCRAFT: We are busy recruiting vintage aircraft to fly over during the Lobethal weekend and in particular aircraft which may have a World War 2 connection as 2009 marks not only the 70th anniversary of the AGP but also of the outbreak of the War. Competition News The season is now well into full swing, two rounds of the State Championship have produced some interesting racing, there have been a few new faces join the championship as well as a few not so new faces. It’s been a bit hectic so far with hill climb, drift and national meetings all demanding attention from our ever dwindling pool of volunteers to run events. If you have any spare time to officiate at meetings the Events Office would love to hear from you. Please also give thought to volunteering for the Lobethal Event in October which promises to be bigger and better (if that’s possible) than last year. 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of John Cooper’s Elfin. Accordingly a large number of Elfins from around the country will descend on Mallala 15th August to mark the occasion. It is the weekend of the HQ Enduro race meeting, which if 2008 was any indication will produce another spectacular event. The program is supported by good fields of Improved Production and Formula Vee racing cars. The Elfins also have reasonable track time activity. So for you enthusiasts get the ‘clubbie” out of the shed and head for Mallala, regardless of the weather – sadly I’ll be away and will miss the event (another weekend in the shed for the clubbie). Our AGM is scheduled for Wednesday 29 July 8.00pm. All positions for the committee are vacant so feel free to nominate or renominate – get involved with the running your club - if nothing else it keeps you off the streets every 4th Wednesday. Fleurieu News Preliminary Notice After the success of the 2007 and 2008 weekend runs, the Fleurieu group is going to hold another run in November 2009. This year we will be driving to the beautiful Coonawarra for the weekend, stopping for lunch on the way on Friday. Accommodation, breakfasts, dinners will all be included in the package along with another “mystery/fun run” on the Saturday. So, put the dates in your diary now – leaving Friday 13 November and returning Sunday 15 November or (optional) Monday 16 November. HRR News The AGM for the HRR was held on Tuesday 14 July, with I must say a poor turn-out of members. I would like announce that Phil Carter has been elected as your new Chairperson and Margaret Hall has kindly taken on the role of Secretary. The committee will consist of John Bryant, Rodney Gibbs, Peter Hall, Trevor Lambert, Ann Ozgo, Tony Parkinson, Troy Ryan and Daniel Smith. Welcome to Troy and Trevor. Vintage News Previous events/meetings June 21 - The Around the Houses outing was fantastic! Fine weather and two fascinating displays proved to be a winning combination. Thanks to the Veteran section for organising the event and to Michael Sheehan for hosting our first visit. Instead, brush up your Shakespeare, be ready to share a few laughs and come along prepared for a fun night. We will be having a completely different type of speaker - a comic Poet! Famously, at Lobethal in 1948, it tipped over at Mill Corner after brake failure. Bill was heard to comment that he “got under the scuttle and waited for the accident that was about to happen!” As a result, Jolly totally rebuilt and re-engineered the car and devised his own front end disc brake system, perhaps the first on a racing car, and although not fitted, the components remain with the car. Interested in encouraging younger members to be actively involved in our Club? I am chairing 2 committees to look at ways to encourage younger members to be involved in the Club. The first group is to look specifically at the Veteran, Vintage and Classic sections, and ways that we can make these sections more appealing to younger members, not just the young at heart. The purpose is not to criticize, but to find better ways and share these with all sections. I anticipate that we would need only 3 or 4 meetings with the intention of sharing our findings this year. The 2nd group would have a wider brief, looking at fee structures, meeting types, club image, methods of communication and competition areas. I believe this will take longer, and may be the start of a regular review. Opinions will also be sought via our Forum on the club website. You are more than welcome to join either or both groups. If you would like to make a comment without joining either committee your opinions would be appreciated, preferably in writing via email, letter or web Forum. Historic Registration – Your Responsibility As members of the Sporting Car Club of SA Inc with cars registered under the Historic Vehicle Registration Scheme we have certain obligations that we must comply with. 1. You must remain a financial member of the club at all times. 2. Your Log book/s must be updated June/July every year by one of the Historic Committee to verify you are a financial member. 3. Your registration paper, after renewal and your log must be presented to one of the Historic Registration committee so that the registration paper can be endorsed and the expiry date entered in the log book. The Clubrooms are open Wed/Thurs/Fri each week for endorsements only. 4. Every time your car is driven on the road you must first enter and sign the details of your trip in your log book, remembering that after midnight, it is another day and another entry. 5. If you are not abiding the above simple rules for use of the system, you are driving an unregistered vehicle and uninsured vehicle, heavy penalties apply if apprehended. 6. If you sell your car, you must present your log book to one of the above for cancellation. The log book does not go with the car to the new owner. 7. Vehicle inspections, checks, issue of log books Ray Mossop, Colin Bourner, Rex Howard are normally available at section meetings or could be contacted for this purpose. 8. If you require endorsement only and you are unable to attend the clubrooms please contact Sandra Brooker 8373 4899, you can post your log book/s and registration papers to the club at 51 King William Road Unley SA 5061, please include self addressed stamped envelope for the return of papers. If your log book is due for replacement enclose $2.00 for the cost of the log book. 9. Joint ownership, if the vehicle is registered in joint names then both parties must be a financial member of the club.

Members Unable to Attend the AGM Members not able to attend the Annual General Meeting but still wishing to cast a vote for both the President and Board elections, may do so by a postal vote. To receive postal voting forms, members should contact the SCC office no later than 22 August to ensure that votes are received prior to the AGM.
