Discover...Scarborough - Whitby - Filey
destination by the sea...
...to a coastline of 3 vibrant towns and surrounding villages that provide fantastic beaches, family fun, quiet contemplations, breathtaking scenery, bustling nightlife, culture, sport, heritage and more... It’s the British Seaside at its best!
SCARBOROUGHA spectacular place to visit whatever the season, Britain’s first holiday resort has something for everyone with historical gems such as its Castle and Museums to superb beaches and an up and coming surf scene. The nightlife is good too with a wide range of theatres, bars and restaurants to choose from.
WHITBYA maritime town steeped in history - every twist of its close cobbled streets has a different story to tell from Captain James Cook to Dracula and jet mines to whaling, but down on the Marina, there is a contemporary street café atmosphere where you can wander and sample a variety of local food.
FILEYAlthough this is the smallest town of the three, it has the biggest beach where children can play safely for hours building sandcastles and dams or they can partake of the traditional seaside donkey ride or take a net and bucket and go searching the rock pools of Filey Brigg, which is also a bird watchers paradise.

Today’s visitor still heads down to the traditional foreshore where they can find an abundance of shops, cafés, take-aways, fresh seafood stalls, ice cream parlours and attractions, including amusements arcades and a fun fair. All located around a busy harbour and the beautiful golden sands of South Bay beach.
A vibrant town with local and national shops means you can enjoy a good choice of shopping. Scarborough Spa Complex and Stephen Joseph Theatre host shows, plays, concerts and events throughout the year in Britain’s first seaside resort.
On the other side of the Castle headland you will also find shops, cafés, indoor swimming pool and the famous Peasholm Park, where you can watch a miniature version of the ‘Battle of River Plate’ being played out. North Bay also hosts the open air theatre which can seat over 6,000 people, bringing in fantastic acts like Katherine Jenkins and Olly Murs. All this is located not more than a few minutes walk from our colourful beach chalets overlooking the beautiful golden sands of North Bay beach.
These two beautiful bays are separated by a magnificent headland on which sits the ruins of Scarborough Castle. Steeped in 2,500 years of history and with panoramic breathtaking views, a visit to the castle and its grounds should be on your to do list.

Whitby
how abouta trip to...Whitby conjures up images of gothic interest amidst the charm of the old harbour from which the annual Regatta plays out. Take a trip on the ‘Bark Endeavour’- an authentic replica of HMS Endeavour, sailed by Captain James Cook during his scientific expedition of 1768. The Endeavour has featured in numerous TV programmes and has become a popular attraction for holiday makers. Finish your journey with a trip to the Captain Cook Memorial museum.
A promenade along the pier gives you a chance to look back at the town and see Whitby in all its glory, or a walk up the famous 199 steps to the majestic Whitby Abbey and St Mary’s Church. Feel the atmosphere of the literary heritage given to us by chapters 5-7 of Bram Stokers ‘Dracula’, these are set in Whitby.
Wander up the cobbled streets to find restaurants, cafés and traditional shops, including bespoke jewellery, some of which is made from the famous Whitby Jet – the compressed remains of ancestors of the monkey puzzle tree.
Folk week brings in scores of visitors to the town to celebrate its history and heritage. Family entertainment can be found at the Whitby Pavilion, including the legendary Goth weekends, 60’s music festival and festival of arts & plays. A visit to Whitby during your holiday should not be missed; it will make you want to visit this charming coastal town time and time again.

An unspoilt seaside resort and gem of the Yorkshire coast. Filey is a must for the young at heart. Take a leisurely or romantic stroll along our 5 miles of sandy beach or enjoy a family day out building sandcastles and playing games, reliving the old fashioned fun you had when you were young.
The steep surrounding sea cliffs offer stunning vistas of beautiful Filey Bay, stretching all the way to Flamborough Head. Discover the numerous types of sea birds that nestle on the cliffs and watch them dive into the sea in search of fish.
Visit the famous Filey Brigg where you can while away the hours investigating the rock pools in search of the diverse array of marine creatures that inhabit them. See what you can discover and identify, its great fun for adults and children alike.
For the culture vultures, why not visit Filey Museum, which is housed in an old fisherman’s cottage at the top end of Queen Street, or marvel at St Oswalds Church, which sits on the North Cliff and was built in the 12th century. Arguably the most notable façade in Filey is ‘The Crescent’ which stands proudly behind the stunning and award winning gardens, where brass bands play on a Sunday afternoon in the summer months and where people sit all year round and enjoy the marvellous views.

how about a trip to...

relax and getaway from it all...
What more could you ask for than spending your time in some of the most spectacular countryside that our county has to offer. Discover woods, forests, valleys and dales or villages with quaint cottages which often play host to fete’s, galas or festivals such as the Muston Scarecrow festival, all part of our wonderful country life.
To discover a variety of landscapes where coast and countryside blend together making us a region of contrasts. So much to see and do. Stately homes, farming attractions, networks of footpaths, cycle paths and trails or find a place to sit and read or eat a picnic under a tree. Travel back in time to the ‘age of steam’ and take a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway with a regular timetable between Pickering and Whitby making stops in the villages of Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont along the way.
Not just for summer, when autumn comes and the leaves turn to gold and copper, there is nothing better than a ramble through the Dalby Forest on the southern slopes of the North Yorks Moors National Park.

We have three wonderful resorts that give you everything your heart desires of a traditional seaside holiday, amusement arcades and slot machines, beautiful sandy beaches with rockpools, donkey rides, miles of walking/cycling trails and interactive museums. The Rotunda museum will transport you back 165 million years to the time when dinosaurs roamed this part of the coast and if you know where to look you can still see their fossilised footprints.
Scarborough’s open air theatre offers a mixed entertainment programme including music concerts, opera productions and community events. The Spa Complex offers entertainment for all ages with an annual pantomime, comedy shows with big names like Ed Byrne and music from the likes of Brian May and Jools Holland to name a few of many visiting this year. The Coastival festival spans this year’s valentines weekend with the love story of Orpheus the Mariner being played out along Scarborough’s foreshore, with live action and an attempt at the world record for the largest puppet reaching 26 metres high. If you are into Sci-Fi, Scarborough is hosting its first Sci-Fi weekend this year.
Visit Whitby and take a trip out to sea on the ‘Bark Endeavour’ and take in the views of our jurassic coastline. Don’t forget a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and re-live the sights, sounds and smells of a steam train adventure.
Adults and children alike will enjoy a trip to Filey’s open air boating lake or a ride on the bumper cars. A walk through Filey Country Park may take your fancy with its stunning views, picnic spots and play areas.

Culture and
Heritage
discovering history...
All three towns provide a strong history in culture and heritage along with the towns fishing communities; that still provide employment to some locals, to this day.
The towns have literary connections with Tennyson & Dickens said to have frequented Whitby and Charlotte Bronte was a regular visitor to Filey. Her sister Anne chose Scarborough as her favourite and ended her days there. Her grave can be visited in St Mary’s 12th century churchyard overlooking Scarborough’s South Bay. Scarborough is lucky enough to have had Alan Ayckbourn premier his new plays at the Stephen Joseph Theatre before taking them to London’s West End. We have sea fairing stories at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby and historical artefacts donated by local citizens at the Filey Museum.
Since Victorian times the Yorkshire coast has been welcoming visitors because of our wonderful culture and heritage. Museums, abbeys, castles, theatres, architecture, cobbled streets, smugglers coves and historic harbours, is there any more you could want on your cultural adventures of the Yorkshire coast & countryside.

youll be spoilt for choice
Whether you are a spectator of sport or like to participate, there is plenty to see and do.
We have fishing festivals, bowls tournaments, golfing championships, facilities for horse riding, surfing, sailing or an opportunity for the family to play together with a game of pitch & putt. If something more extreme is more your ideal, a trip to the Dalby Forest for the mountain bike tracks or Go Ape zip wires and segway tours may be for you. We have some fantastic surfing conditions here on the Yorkshire coast so don your wetsuit and ride the waves; you may be good enough to join the UK Pro Surf championship held in October in Scarborough’s North Bay. Never surfed before? Why not book yourself some tuition with one of our local surf schools.
Scarborough boasts the annual Cricket Festival where Yorkshire take on other county teams – what could be better than a beautiful sunny day with a cold drink, and the sound of the cricket ball hitting the willow. Whitby hosts its annual Regatta each summer where many maritime events take place, including the rowing competition between Whitby & Scarborough. Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough holds various motorcycle & car racing events throughout the year, as we have one of the only TT style street circuits in the UK.
If cycling is your passion, with the Grand Depart route starting an hour away, why not use the North Yorkshire Coast as your base and bring your own bike or hire one to try out our many cycle paths and trails.
