...to a coastline of 3 vibrant towns and surrounding villages that provide, fantastic beaches, family fun, quiet contemplations, breathtaking scenery, bustling nightlife, culture, sport, heritage and more... It’s the British Seaside at its best!

ScarBoroughA spectacular place to visit whatever the

season, Britain’s first holiday resort has

something for everyone with historical gems

such as its Castle and Museums to superb

beaches and an up and coming surf scene.

The nightlife is good too with a wide range of

theatres, bars and restaurants to choose from.

whItByA maritime town steeped in history - every

twist of its close cobbled streets has a different

story to tell from Captain James Cook to

Dracula and jet mines to whaling, but down

on the Marina, there is a contemporary street

café atmosphere where you can wander and

sample a variety of local food.

FILEyAlthough this is the smallest town of the three,

it has the biggest beach where children can

play safely for hours building sandcastles and

dams or they can partake of the traditional

seaside donkey ride or take a net and bucket

and go searching the rock pools of Filey Brigg

which is also a bird watchers paradise.

ScarboroughScarborough has two beautiful bays which are separated by a magnifi cent headland on which sits the ruins of Scarborough castle, which has been in existence in some form or other for over 2,500 years.

Scarborough’s South Bay is where you will fi nd the Historic

Scarborough Spa Complex, shops, amusement arcades, restaurants,

cafés, take-aways, the harbour, a fun fair, attractions and of

course a golden beach.

On the other side of the headland, in the North Bay, there are

shops, cafés, an indoor swimming pool, a beautiful golden beach

and Peasholm Park where you can hire a boat and row around the

lake, or sit and watch the ‘Battle of River Plate’ which is re-enacted

in miniature every week during the summer.

Peasholm Park plays host to concerts and has a bespoke stage in

the middle of the lake as well as the much bigger Open Air Theatre

which can seat up to 6,000 people. Last year Ollie Murs, JLS, John

Barrowman and Dionne Warwick, all performed at the Theatre and

were given a warm Yorkshire Welcome!

Scarborough Town itself is vibrant and busy with many national

and local shops and stores to provide you with the best shopping

experience. The nightlife is wonderful and there is a great choice of

shows, plays, concerts and events on offer throughout the year.

whitbythis beautiful resort retains the historic charm that has brought millions of visitors to the town for decades. Quaint cobbled streets that wind up from the marina feature local bespoke shops, restaurants, cafés and bars and the whole town has an atmosphere of friendliness.

A holiday in Whitby means that you can ride an open top bus

around the town, paddle amongst the rock pools of Sandsend and

Robin Hoods Bay, go out on one of the many boat trips available

from the marina or journey out and explore the spectacular beauty

of the North York Moors.

The Whitby Pavilion Complex provides lots of entertainment

throughout the year and is also the base for many popular fairs,

festivals and events such as Whitby Folk Week, Whitby Regatta and

the now legendary Goth Weekends.

With its history and heritage, Whitby has everything you need for

that long relaxing holiday or a short ‘get away from it all’ break.

FileyFiley is a friendly, fun, festive, fantastic resort that has5 miles of golden sandy beach, just perfect for that family holiday. although it is the quietest and smallest of our three resorts, it still packs a punch when it comes to offering you the very best of the traditional British seaside.

Filey has many bespoke shops which are ideal for those holiday

mementos and it has a good choice of restaurants, cafés and bars.

You can while away a few hours in Glen or Crescent Gardens

before heading down to the seafront and the Coble Landing where

you can see local fi shermen still landing their catch.

Coble Landing has a new attraction these days – a larger than life

statue of a fi sherman stands proudly looking out to sea – the statue

was bought and donated by a local lady who loves the town so

much, she wanted to give Filey a gift.

Sitting above the Coble Landing is the Filey Country Park where you

will fi nd lots of picnic spots, a café, children’s playground and the

start/fi nish of the Cleveland Way and the Wolds Way. You can also

get access down on to Filey Brigg which is rich in wildlife – seabirds

nesting on the sheer cliffs and crabs and mussels in the rock pools.

If all of that is not enough you can enjoy the history of the town by

visiting St Oswalds Church, the Filey Museum or just appreciate the

Edwardian architecture of this lovely seaside town.

the countrysidethe wild and dramatic scenery of the North yorkshire coast is enhanced by the natural beauty of the countryside which is to be found a short distance inland.

Spend an afternoon discovering hidden valleys and dales, heather

clad moors, woods and forests or quaint villages where you may be

lucky enough to stumble upon a fete, gala or festival which is an

intrinsic part of country life.

Quiet walks through leafy country lanes, or for the more active

walker, following a waymarked walk through some of the fi nest

countryside you will ever see, has to be on your holiday itinerary.

The countryside is not just ideal for those summer holidays, imagine

the colours of autumn when the leaves are turning to gold and

copper, or the wonderful sound of snow crunching under your

boots as you look around and see a winter wonderland.

Spring is also a beautiful time of year too when daffodils and spring

fl owers start to bloom and lambs are frolicking in the fi elds around

you. The Yorkshire Coast really is a destination for all seasons.

Fun for all the familyJust look at the face of the Seal in the main image – how cute! you can see him and all his friends at the Scarborough SeaLife and Marine Sanctuary as well as play a round of crazy golf on the Pirate themed adventure golf course.

Olly Murs, JLS and John Barrowman are just a few names of the

Performers who starred at the Open Air Theatre in Scarborough’s

North Bay last summer. This year’s line up promises to be just as

good so why not check out who is playing here and fi t in a holiday

or short break around your favourite star!

We are also lucky enough to be able to show West End Shows such

as Calendar Girls, Joseph & the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat,

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice as well as ballets and operas at the

Futurist Theatre on Scarborough’s sea front and Whitby’s Pavilion

Complex on the West Cliff has a fantastic schedule of family

entertainment throughout the year.

All three resorts have amusement arcades and slot machines –

a few 2 pence pieces can bring hours of fun for all the family as

you try your skill on the machines.

Our museums are all getting interactive and you can be transported

165 million years back in time to discover which dinosaurs roamed

the area in an amazing new exhibition at the Rotunda Museum in

Scarborough.

Filey’s bumper cars and open air boating lake provide the perfect

opportunity for Mums and Dads to relive their youth and have a go

– all in the name of keeping an eye on the Kids of course!

culture and heritagethe yorkshire coast is steeped in history, heritage and culture – from Viking invasions to pilgrimages celebrating the christian faith, you will fi nd out what has made Scarborough, whitby and Filey the towns they are today by visiting our many historic heritage sites – whitby abbey and Scarborough castle, as well as our museums and galleries.

All three towns have literary connections – Dickens and Tennyson

are said to have drunk in Whitby’s Taverns and Inns, Charlotte

Bronte was a regular visitor to Filey, whereas her sister Anne,

favoured Scarborough which is where you can fi nd her

grave in the 12th Century Graveyard of St Mary’s

Church which overlooks Scarborough’s South Bay.

The world famous playwright Alan Ayckbourn premieres

all of his new plays at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in

Scarborough and we have also been lucky enough to host

a David Hockney exhibition at Scarborough’s Art Gallery.

If sea-faring stories are more of an interest, a visit to the Captain

Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby is a must – this wonderful

museum has just won the Best Small Visitor Attraction category at

the prestigious White Rose Awards which are run by Welcome to

Yorkshire. Filey Museum offers an interesting insight into the town’s

local history, traditions and customs, displaying a range of

historical artefacts mainly donated by local citizens.

Here on the Yorkshire Coast we have and still host a number

of world class professional sporting events from the Annual

Scarborough Cricket Festival to the Open Surf Championships.

You can also bring your favourite sport on holiday with you…

load up your car with your golf clubs, mountain or road bike,

fi shing rod or surf/body board and you can enjoy your favourite

pastime in completely different surroundings.

Many people love to bring their pets on holiday and again,

if you are a horse lover, some countryside accommodation provide

stabling to enable you to bring your own horse on holiday. If this

is not practical, there are a number of Riding Stables in all three

resorts where you can book an hours hack or lesson.

Swimming can be enjoyed all along the coast and all three resorts

have indoor swimming pools, but don’t forget – its free in the sea!

Yorkshire Water are currently undertaking major water works in

the area so that in the future we can boast to have some of the

cleanest beaches and bathing waters in the country.

If you have never made homemade candyfl oss because you thought you needed an elaborate mechanical set-up to do so, then you and your family have been missing out on an incredibly fun albeit potentially messy dessert project. Be sure to allow plenty of time for this experiment, then get ready to have some fun.

how to make cotton candy Floss

Instructions

1 Cut the wires at the end of the whisk using the wire cutters. Cut them so that instead of having a rounded end, the whisk now has a bunch of tines that point downward out of the handle.

2 Duct tape the wooden spoons so that they hang off the edge of the kitchen counter. They should be about 6 to 12 inches away from each other, and as much of the spoons’ handles as possible should be hanging off. Tape the bowl end of the spoon for greater stability.

3 Place several large garbage bags on the fl oor under the spoons. You may wish to tape these down as well.

4 Heat the candy ingredients (5 cups of granulated sugar, 1-1/3 cups of light corn syrup,1 cup of water, several drops of food colouring, candy fl avouring oil) in the sauce pan. Do not use any heat greater than

medium or you will scorch the sugar to the bottom of the pan. As you heat the ingredients, they will form a sticky liquid. Use the candy thermometer to measure the liquid and remove it from heat when it reaches 160°C.

5 Pour the liquid into the glass bowl. Be very careful because it will be extremely hot.

6 Create your candyfl oss fl oss. Dip the whisk’s tines into the sugar mixture, then wave them about 18 inches over the wooden spoons so that the sugar falls in strands across the spoons. As the liquid falls through the air, it will cool and create candyfl oss fl oss. Continue to do this until the spoon handles are covered in candyfl oss. You can roll this candy up in paper and eat it.

traditional seaside rock is made using granulated sugar and glucose syrup. the mix is approximately 3:1, i.e. three parts sugar to one part glucose syrup.

This is mixed together in a pan with enough water to dissolve the sugar (not enough water will result in burning the sugar or the end product being sugary and possibly 'graining off').

This is then boiled to approximately 147 °C or 'hard crack' before being poured onto water-cooled steel plates. Once poured, food colourings for the casing and lettering are added and mixed in by hand using a spoon or small palette knife.

Once the toffee mixture is poured onto a water-cooled plate, it begins to form a skin underneath, this makes it possible to cut out the colourings, using a pair of shears. The casings and lettering is constantly 'turned in' to prevent 'chill' (unsightly lumps in the fi nished product).

The remainder of the toffee is stiffened up before going onto a 'pulling' machine, a machine that has a fi xed arm, and two moving arms, one rotating clockwise, the other counter-clockwise. The pulling machine aerates the toffee, turning it from a solid golden mass into the soft white that forms the centre of the stick of rock.

Whilst on the pulling machine, fl avourings are added by pouring in measured amounts. A small amount of now white toffee is taken from the pulling machine, this is used to keep the form of the letters which are made from the coloured toffee.

Seaside rockVanilla ice creamA lovely vanilla ice cream, using fresh double goats' milk cream

Ingredients

• 300ml (half pint) goats' milk• Half a vanilla pod• 4 egg yolks• 100g (4oz) caster sugar• 250ml double goats' cream (2 x 125g pots)

Method

Pour the milk and the half vanilla pod into a saucepan and bring to

the boil. Remove from the heat and leave to infuse for a few minutes.

Beat the egg yolks and sugar together in a bowl and then carefully

add the milk and beat well.

Return the mixture to the saucepan, heat gently and stir continuously

until the mixture thickens and forms a fi lm over the back of a wooden

spoon. DO NOT BOIL.

Remove saucepan from the heat and leave until cool. Remove the half

vanilla pod. Add cream and then stir into the mixture.

Pour into ice cream maker and follow instructions. Alternatively, turn

the mixture into a freezer tray or basin and freeze until mushy.

Remove from the freezer and whisk for about 2 minutes. Return to

freezer until fi rm.

Makes 750ml of ice cream.
