Type MD Light-curtain

The Type MD Light-curtain scanner was originally designed as a simple light curtain to provide a rough diameter measurement of logs. Since its inception it has morphed into a number of useful devices.

West Fraser (Pacific Inland Resources) used a number of the MD sensors as a backlog scanner to control the flow of lumber from the unscrambler through to the lug loader. This was always a problem area both for production and safety of the workers.

The new scanner has improved both situations. Now, with a controlled flow, they are achieving a higher lug fill while eliminating a lot of the pinch and back injuries from moving large, heavy boards on the transfer conveyor.

Specifications

• Type MD Scanner has LEDs spaced at one-inch (25mm) along its length.

• With its 19-foot (6m) field of view the receiver can be place high, out of the way of operations.

• The emitter can be placed under the transfer chain, angled toward the back clear lumber line.

• Available in lengths of 8-inches (200mm) to 120- inches (3030mm) in 8-inch increments.

Type PROX

The new Type PROX is an outcome of the success of the MD scanner. It has the emitter LED and the receiver phototransistor on the same board.

The scanner is mounted over or under the transfer deck between 4-inches (100mm) and 18-inches (460mm) from the board.

Each cell outputs its data to a remote I/O block through an RS422 serial link. The I/O block can be located up to 1,000 feet away in the PLC.

I/O outputs may be combined to reduce I/O inputs into the PLC

Specifications

• Available in lengths of 8-inches (200mm) to 64- inches (1625mm) in 8-inch increments.

• 12 to 24volt power requirement• Detects up to 18-inch (467mm)

field of view. (adjustable)• Single RS422 cable connects to

remote I/O block (REM-I/O)

PROX Mounted Beneath Chain

• With frequency drives on each deck, the lumber speeds up to fill any gap in the flow.

• Double-ups almost eliminated - increasing safety for the workers.

• Higher lug fill with metering feed.

Remote I/O Block (REM-IO)

• I/O from each cell on scanner is transmitted via RS422 serial link to the remote I/O block.

• I/O can be grouped using a true table to reduce I/O in the PLC

• Removable Quick terminals • RS232 interface for ease in

programming with PC.• Adjustable emitter intensity

Automatic Planer Infeed

• PLC logic provides “just in time” solution to arrive at the pinch rolls at the proper time

• Eliminates the friction from too much pressure from the boards on the deck feeding the bridge

• Entire line controlled by tilt-hoist operator
