Peerless Industrial Group, established in 1917, is now the largest chain manufacturer in North America. The acquisition of Weissenfels USA in March of 2004 bolstered the overhead lifting product line as it brought access to quality European forgings. The American Chain Company (ACCO) acquisition in July of 2006 further expanded the overhead lifting product line; plus entered Peerless into the marine chain and fitting market. In December of 2010, the overhead lifting product line was bolstered once again with the acquisition of Letellier Material Handling Equipment (LMHE). The following information is designed to provide basic product knowledge of Peerless traction products. These traction products are used under varying conditions, such as weather and road conditions, driver skills, and vehicle deviations; (any of these conditions, or combination of conditions, can alter traction performance). As a rule, traction devices should be used with caution.

Traction devices require all tires to be in good, road worthy, condition. The tread must not be worn beyond the tread depth indicators. A combination of varying road conditions, worn tires, and poor driver judgment can cause an unsafe driving atmosphere.

The following information was collected by the National Safety Council’s Committee in Winter Driving Hazards.

Note: as indicated, according to the tests performed, chains are more efficient when compared to other traction devices. For more information, contact the National Safety Council.

Minimum Clearances Required for Passenger & Light Truck Tire Chains

The correct Peerless traction product to recommend is based on wheel well clearance. Newer, front wheel drive cars have a limited degree of wheel well clearance. The specified minimum clearance must always be maintained around spring clips, fuel lines, braces, brake lines, and all other vital areas.

To determine the appropriate clearance, direct your customer to their owner’s manual. Every manual provides the correct SAE class rating for that specific vehicle, and with that, the correct traction device can be recommended.

SAE Class S Regular (non-reinforced) passenger tire traction devices for vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance.SAE Class U Regular (non-reinforced) and lug reinforced passenger tire traction devices for vehicles with regular (non-restricted) wheel well clearances.SAE Class W Passenger tire traction devices that use light truck components, as well as some light truck traction devices.

For your reference, the following table lists the clearance in inches for each class. Note: the minimum clearances specified must be maintained around fenders, struts, brake lines and braces.

After the class rating is determined, you then need to determine theappropriate tire size. Most tire sizes covered by Peerless products are listed on the product packaging, as well as this catalog. In case of a conflict between packaging and the catalog, always refer to the information on the package. Continued travel with a broken traction assembly can cause damage to your vehicle and is a breach of warranty. Under no circumstances will Peerless be liable for any special or consequential damages resulting from the continued use of a broken traction assembly. No other express warranty is given and no affirmation, by words or action, shall constitute a warranty.

REMEDIES: The buyer’s sole remedy for breach of any warranty is limited exclusively to obtaining, at the discretion of the seller, either credit or repair or replacement of any product sold hereunder and manufactured by Peerless Chain Company within 90 days after delivery to the owner.

MINIMUM CHARGE: A minimum charge of $150.00, excluding shipping charges, is required. No invoice will be rendered for less than that amount.

STANDARD CREDIT TERMS: Upon credit approval, net 30 days.

FREIGHT TERMS: Orders of $1,500 or more will be shipped prepaid within the continental United States to a single address with a single release date utilizing a preferred Peerless carrier.

Orders shipped by a customer specified carrier will be shipped collect and a freight allowance provided on orders of $1,500 or more. Please contact Customer Service for details.

Orders shipped outside of the continental United States will be shipped prepaid as above to an appropriate port of debarkation. Freight charges beyond the port of debarkation are the responsibility of the ordering customer.

STANDARD PACKAGING: Orders must be placed for full cartons using the basic unit of measure in multiples of the indicated quantities.

RETURN GOODS POLICY: Items purchased from this catalog are returnable ONLY when pre-authorized by a Peerless Chain Company Customer Service Representative in Winona, MN, who will issue a Return Authorization Number. This number must be displayed PROMINENTLY on the return material shipping containers AND the carrier’s freight bill. UNAUTHORIZED SHIPMENTS WILL BE REFUSED AND RETURNED AT THE SENDERS EXPENSE. All authorized returns must be sent prepaid to Winona, MN, and are subject to restocking charges. Any product not returned in original salable condition will be subject to an additional reconditioning charge.

CLAIMS AND SHORTAGES: Peerless is willing to assist you in collecting claims for loss or damage, however we are not responsible for collection of claims or replacement of merchandise. All requests for assistance must be accompanied by a copy of the freight bill noting the shortage or damage and signed by the delivering carrier’s driver.
