Gear

• Cod end mesh size: 1.3 cm (4), 0.64 (1)– Body mesh size: 3.8 cm (2)

• Net length: not sure (3), 8 m (1)• Net Opening: 7.6 m (4), 8 m (1)• Otter Board: 76 x 50 cm (4), variable (1)• Bridle length: 23 m (4)

Taxonomy• All ID to lowest taxon possible• All voucher, depends –Agency , taxon, project• Voucher verification: as needed on specimen

or photo IDs, mostly internal review• External verification: outside (3), Bight (3)

– Mixed corrective actions: usually review/retraining Key

FIDs/Abundance• Preservation: freeze(4), photo(2), formalin(5),

alcohol(5): 95%ETOH, 70% ETOH, 45% Isoprop

• Verify Counts: Crew chief(4), Chief Taxonomist

• Frequency: 8sp/cruise(2), twice daily, one/day, after survey, only Bight, NA, only measure 125/sp then weigh the rest

• Count error: 1%, <5%, 10%(2), NA (3)

Biomass

• Verify Biomass: Yes(5), No, at office

• Frequency: 8sp/cruise(2), twice daily, one/day, after survey, only Bight, NA

• Biomass error: 2.5%, <10%, 10%, NA

• Performance Measures: No (5), Yes (2)

Personnel and Training• Range in Crew Chief requirements was perhaps the most

variable– 1 to 10+ years experience, job classification, skill base needs,

virtually no ongoing training

• Taxonomists required the most experience and skill knowledge– Performance requirements were poorly described

• Science Hands were the most consistent– Little to no experience, lots of supervision

Page 13: SCAITE Questionnaire Summary By Dario W. Diehl and Ken Schiff.

Data

• All agencies QA data entry – nearly all do 100% data audits on 100% of samples– Allowable error rates range from 0 to 10%

Categories To Standardize• Sampling Location Accuracy• Sampling Representativeness • Sampling Precision• Trawling corrective action• Gear specifications• On deck processing• Taxonomy• Personnel and Training• Data reporting
