PPT-SM-SS 2016
Many workers do jobs in elevated areas using walking working surfaces like ladders, stairways, and scaffolds
2
PPT-SM-SS 2016
ScaffoldsAre mainly designed as work platformsAre usually provided for elevated work Allow you to do jobs at heights that take a long
time, require both hands, or require
more than one worker
3
PPT-SM-SS 2016
A scaffold and its components must be capable of supporting, without failure, its own weight and at least four times the maximum intended load applied or transferred to it
4
Only qualified workers should determine the
maximum load capacity
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Your company must make sure workers are trained to use scaffolds by a qualified person
5
A qualified person is someone who has a recognized degree or certificate or extensive experience and the ability
to solve or resolve problems on the
job
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Scaffolds must be inspected by a qualified worker for damage, deterioration, and missing partsBefore workers are allowed to use themBefore each shiftAfter any situation that could affect their safe use
6
PPT-SM-SS 2016
There are many hazards that should be considered when you work on or near scaffolding
72% of workers injured in scaffold accidents attributed their accident either to the planking or support giving way
8
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Electrical hazards include
Working near energized or exposed electrical linesUsing electrical power tools and welding equipment
10
PPT-SM-SS 2016
A scaffold must not be set up, used, taken down, changed, or moved in any way that would put the scaffold and its components closer than 10 ft. to exposed and energized powerlines less than 50 kV
11
If a worker is using electrical equipment on a scaffold, the scaffold must be grounded
For voltages over 50 kV, the scaffold must not be closer than 10 ft. plus 4 in. for each kV over 50 kV
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Fall protection may be needed on scaffolds even if handrails are provided
You are not allowed to tie-off to scaffolds
12
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Ladders or stairways must be provided for climbing onto a scaffold and must meet OSHA specifications
Always use a ladder or stairs to access the upper work surface of a scaffold
13
Never climb or work from a scaffold’s handrail, midrail, cross-
braces, or braces
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Workers are not allowed to work on scaffolds that are covered with snow, ice, or other slippery materials that put them at risk for slips, trips, and falls
14
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Falling objects can cause
DeathInjuryStructural and equipment damageEnvironmental damage
15
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Your company protects you from falling objects by inspecting work areas for objects that could potentially fall and requiring workers on lower levels to wear hard hats
16
Additional falling object protection includes toeboards, screens, guardrails, debris
nets, catch platforms, and canopy structures
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Eliminate the chances of an object falling from a scaffold or causing a worker to trip by stacking them in a secure way
Tie hand tools and equipment to safety lines
17
PPT-SM-SS 2016
Many workers have jobs that require them to work on scaffolds
Be aware of the hazards, and follow your training
