Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. All states of matter contain energy. A state is the form in which matter exists. When heat is added to a system, the temperature of substances in the system increases. When heat is removed from the system, temperature decreases. If enough heat is added to or removed from a system, substances in the system will change state.Whenever the temperature of an object or substance changes, heat is being transferred.
