On Saturday, December 1, the Sawdust Art Festival hosted 13 girls from Mission Viejo Girl Scout Troop #812 for their annual educational arts trip. Underwritten by the Sawdust Art Enrichment Fund, Sawdust glass artist Patty Slowsky-Enfield taught a two-hour workshop on creating fused glass holiday ornaments from 11am-1pm in the Healy House. After creating festive designs by carefully desiging and arranging colored glass pieces, the girl scouts enjoyed the remainder of the day on the Winter Fantasy grounds exploring original artwork created by the 170 Sawdust artists. Each year, the girl scouts from troop #812 have the opportunity to take an explorative trip to Laguna Beach where they spend the night at the Laguna Beach Girl Scout House on High Drive and experience a new educational activity during the day. The Sawdust’s mission of educating the public and promoting the art cre-ated in Laguna Beach is a perfect fit for the purpose of their annual trip. All set to be fused and fired in the kiln, the glass ornaments will be delivered to the girls just in time for the holidays and will serve as a reminder of their

unique art education expe-rience.

The Sawdust Art En-richment Fund (SAEF) is a philanthropic effort, which supports educat-ing the public about the arts through programs that provide hands-on experi-ence in creating art. As more elementary schools, middle schools and high schools continue to close their classroom doors for art education, SAEF is now engaged in a program to re-open those doors and bring art back to the forefront in Laguna Beach. Established in 2011, SAEF actively seeks donations to support its programs and its purpose. For more information on how to contribute to SAEF, contact 949-494-3030 or [email protected].

The 22nd Annual Winter Fantasy at the Sawdust Art Festival runs four weekends: November 17, 18, 23, 24, 25 and December 1, 2, 8, 9. Hours are 10 am to 6 pm. Adult admission is $6; $5 for Seniors (65+); $3 for children (6-12); FREE for children (5

& under); and $9 for a Season Pass. The festival is located at the Sawdust Art Festival, 935 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. For additional information, please visit www.sawdustartfestival.org or call 949-494-3030.

The Sawdust Art Festival is a non-profit art organization dedicated to educating the public and promoting the art created in Laguna Beach.

As the baby boomers generation ages, the love for building Hot Rods and Custom races cars continues to grow with them. This longtime dream for a few has become a life style for Russ Deane and Pete Chapouris. Both of these men have proudly made it into the Specialty Equipment Market As-sociation (SEMA) hall of fame. Russ was instrumental for over 30 years working as longtime general counsel for SEMA to guild the aftermarket car parts industry. Pete was been busy most of his life building custom Hot Rods and restoration of classic racers.

Russ is not the type of guy that wants to always be sitting in an office chair be-hind a desk. He feels more thrilled with seating in the driver’s seat of a custom race car that has set new speed records at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats. During the early stages of his career, he worked as a legislative assistant to a congressman and was also Staff Assistant to the President of the United States, and held a number of positions with government agencies. His life-long interest in cars and motorcycles made his relationship with SEMA all the more ideal, but his work with the automotive

industry is only part of a very active political and legal career.

Pete is now president of So-Cal Speed Shops and turning heads with custom hot rods and restorations of classic racers from the past. Pete and the SO-CAL team have built 4 land speed cars for GM Performance and in the last 5 seasons, set a half dozen records putting 4 drivers in the 200 MPH Club. His crowning glory in body of work is the restoration of the Doane Spencer roadster. Built by Doane in 1948 to compete in the infamous Carrera Pan-American Mexican road race, this car has an impeccable pedigree. It also won the hearts of the Pebble Beach judges, winning the inaugural Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Hot Rod Class. The win at Pebble Beach was a fitting end to a chapter but not before Pete was selected as one of the Top 100 Most Influential People within the high-performance industry and, as such, was inducted into the Hot Rod Magazine Hall of Fame. His work on a pair of Harley-Davidson “HogZZillas” for Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top has turned into a friendship with Billy which has resulted in numerous A list projects.

Russ and Pete are trying to keep the love of Hot Rods and Custom Racers alive for the next generation. Their pas-

sion of racing on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats where a car can travel for many miles alone at top speeds is in danger of being lost. The Bonneville Salt Flats has been used for racing since 1914 and countless land speed records have been set at the site. For example, the 300, 400, 500, and 600 mile per hour land speed barriers were broken on its natural straightway.

The world-famous Speed Week dates back to 1949 and the Bonneville Salt Flats’ protected status recognize the importance of racing as a com-patible use. They are working with SaveTheSalt.org a nonprofit organiza-tion whose mission is to protect the

Bonneville Salt Flats and to promote its history and motorsports legacy.

Their efforts and commitment to the youth today is to provide the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of building and racing a custom race car and having a place to experience the Flats. Saving the Bonneville Salt Flats’ is something that is in interest of many as Thousands of visitors, commercial film makers, and land speed racers make the Bonneville Salt Flats a world famous destination.

Russ and Pete are working with SaveTheSalt.org that aspires to keep this national treasure available for future generations.

Segerstrom Center’s International Dance Season continues February 8 – 10 with the return of Hamburg Ballet performing its hauntingly compelling production of The Little Mermaid. This will be the company’s exclusive Southern California engagement and the Southern California premiere of the ballet. It is based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen with direction and choreography by John Neumeier, Hamburg Ballet’s direc-tor and chief choreographer. This sophisticated interpretation of the classic story delves into the deeper themes of conflicted love and loss. Featuring an original commissioned score by renowned composer Lera Auerbach, Neumeier’s contempo-rary version of The Little Mermaid explores two divergent worlds: the serenity and simplicity of underwater life and the complex, often absurd, lives of humans.

Inspired in part by traditional Japa-nese theater, Neumeier’s vision fea-tures striking costumes and dramatic scenery. He interweaves the story with elements of Andersen’s biogra-phy, making the writer a figure in the ballet. The Mermaid’s feelings and her tragic destiny become a reflection of Andersen’s own longing. As she travels through both her own world and that of humans, enduring tor-ment because of her committed love for a prince, in the end, the Mermaid discovers her own strength.

Tickets for Hamburg Ballet start at $25 and will go on sale Sunday, December 16 at 10 a.m. PST. They will be available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town

Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. The TTY number is (714) 556-2746. Free Preview Talks will occur one hour prior to each performance. The Friday, February 8 Preview Talk will be sign-language interpreted. Artists and program are subject to change.

Since 1973, American-born John Neumeier has been director and chief choreographer of Hamburg Ballet and “Ballettintendant” since 1996. Under his direction, Hamburg Ballet became one of the leading ballet companies of the German dance scene and quickly received international recognition. As a choreographer, Neumeier has con-tinually focused on the preservation of ballet tradition, while giving his works a modern dramatic framework. His latest creations for the Hamburg Bal-let, Purgatorio and Liliom, premiered in 2011.

The Little Mermaid was commis-sioned by the Royal Danish Ballet to commemorate the 200th birthday of Hans Christian Andersen. It pre-miered in Copenhagen on April 15, 2005. In 2007, Neumeier created a revised version for his own com-pany, the Hamburg Ballet, and the score was completely reworked by Lera Auerbach. The current touring production is based on adaptations made by Hamburg Ballet. In 2010, The Little Mermaid, premiered by San Francisco Ballet, was first performed on the American continent and made its Russian debut at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow

Academic Music Theatre in 2011. In 2012, the production will premiere at the National Ballet of China.

The Center’s International Dance Series is made possible by: Audrey Steele Burnand Endowed Fund for International Dance and The Seger-strom Foundation Endowment for Great Performances with special underwriting from William J. Volunteers are needed to help count bald eagles for the 35th season in the annual winter bald eagle counts in and near the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains on Saturday December 15, January 12, February 9, and March 9.

Concurrent Bald Eagle counts are held at Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrow-head, Lake Silverwood, Lake Perris, and Lake Hemet. Volunteers are stationed at vantage points around the lakes, where they watch for bald eagles during a 1-hour period on the count mornings. Volunteers record their observations on maps and data sheets. This is a wonderful opportunity to catch a glimpse of our breath-taking national symbol. A brief orientation is conducted prior to the count so volunteers know where to go and what to do.

“Through this method, the agencies and land managers have learned a lot about which areas are important to eagles and how the populations are doing. But we can’t do it without a lot of volunteers – we need their eyes to help us look,” said Forest Service biologist Robin Eliason.

The bald eagle counts for this winter are scheduled for the following Saturday mornings: December 15, January 12, February 9, and March 9.

No experience needed. Signing up ahead of time is unnecessary – just show up at the desig-nated time and location, dress warmly, bring bin-oculars and a watch.

· Big Bear Lake area volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Forest Service’s Big Bear Dis-covery Center on North Shore Drive for orien-tation. Contact Robin Eliason ([email protected] or 909-382-2832) for more information. Con-tact the Discovery Cen-ter (909-866-2789) for information about Eagle Celebrations.

· Lake Arrowhead/Lake Gregory volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Skyfor-est Ranger Station for orientation. Contact Robin Eliason ([email protected] or 909-382-2832) for more information.

· Silverwood Lake State Rec-reation Area volunteers should plan to meet at the Visitor Center at 8:00 a.m. for orientation. Contact Kathy Williams or Mark Wright for more in-formation about volunteering or taking

an eagle tour (760-389-2303 between 8:00 and 4:00; or email: [email protected]).

· Lake Hemet volunteers should plan on meeting at the Lake Hemet Grocery Store at 8:30 a.m. for orientation. Contact Anne Poo-patanapong ([email protected] or 909-382-2935) for more information.

· Lake Perris State Recreation Area volunteers should plan to meet

at the Lake Perris Regional Indian Museum at 8:00 for orientation. Con-tact the office for more information at 951-940-5600.

See websites for additional infor-mation about the San Bernardino National Forest (http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/) and the California State Recreation Areas (www.parks.ca.gov).

You don’t have to be a gourmet chef to add great flavor to your fa-vorite recipes. In fact, you probably already have what you need in your pantry to make something that will excite your taste buds.

The trick is to find new ways to use familiar ingredients – such as using flavored potato chips as a crunchy breading for baked fish or chicken. If you’re ready to have fun with flavor, here are a few other easy ideas:

Herbed Salts: Mixing some of your favorite herbs in with salt adds a whole new dimension of flavor to your dish. Combine 1/2 cup of coarse sea salt with your favorite combination of herbs, such as whole dried rosemary and dried thyme; cumin seeds, cori-ander seeds and dill seeds; or dried lemon or orange zest and lavender. Put it in a pepper mill and grind as needed.

Sweet and Savory Desserts: Make a pound cake with fruity olive oil instead of vegetable oil, or try a chocolate chip cookie recipe with a little smoky bacon mixed in. Serve strawberries and balsamic vinegar over ice cream, or try some sharp cheddar cheese melted over a sweet apple pie. How about a Mexican-

inspired chocolate pudding with a pinch of chili powder?

Snacks and Appetizers: Mix things up for some easy, no-cook eats like watermelon slices with chunks of feta cheese; hummus and red grapes; or popcorn with smoked almonds and chocolate chips.

Garden Tomato and Basil SoupMakes 4 to 6 servings

vanguard honors veterans and celeBrate veterans

resource center

Over one hundred guests gathered in Vanguard University’s Veterans Courtyard of Honor to pay homage to the many veterans who have served our country. The celebration began with the Invocation, given by Chaplain of the Student Veterans Club, Rory Self. Following a heartfelt welcome from Vanguard University (VU) President, Dr. Carol Taylor, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher handed well-deserved awards to Freedom Committee of Or-ange County’s Jack Hammett USN (ret.) and Vanguard Veterans Resource Center President, SSgt. Gabriel Corona.

The act of courage these veterans have shown by virtue of having served our country became more apparent hearing Keynote Speaker and Vice President of the Students Veterans Club, Chris Kupitz, recount his experi-ence serving eight years in the US Army, including two Iraq deployments. Attendees were quickly brought to a place of sobering reflection as Kupitz explained the events that initially led him to answer the call to serve. A stark picture of a journey that began in 2001 unfolded as Kupitz bravely shared his painful struggle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and battling depression resulting from the tragic news of his best friend’s suicide. The fortuitous opportunity to leave combat and work alongside top military leaders in creating lasting government processes in Iraq was something he believes helped save him from following in his best friend’s footsteps.

“I was the most decorated soldier in my command from that first tour having been awarded the Bronze Star, a second NCO ribbon for completing BNOC, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal II,” Kupitz said of returning home from his second deployment. “But I felt like a broken and lost soldier returning home to the states.”

Kupitz’s experience returning home highlights the realities that men and women who return home from war commonly face.

“When our soldiers are returning home broken, confused, frustrated, angry, and unable to fully comprehend or cope with the residual torment of a war zone they survived, what we need to provide our veterans with is a loving, safe environment, that allows them to process everything they have endured; a place that believes in their future, supports their needs and is actively pursuing them, before they become another statistic,” said Kupitz.

A shining example of the place Kupitz describes is what he – and many other student veterans – have found at the Veterans Resource Center at VU. Founded in 2010 by a group of Vanguard student veterans, the Veter-ans Resource Center supports veterans by providing academic planning, financial advisement, and resources for professional, personal and spiritual development.

“Many of the 30,000 veterans who return to California each year experi-ence challenges when transitioning from military to civilian life,” says Brent Theobald, Director of Government Relations at VU. “Education is the best transitional bridge for veterans because it provides hope for a better life through increased employability, higher income potential and restored pur-pose through self-discovery.”

Among those transitioning, it is estimated that 30,000 to 300,000 veterans nationally will be affected by invisible wounds of war, such as PTSD and other related mental disorders including traumatic brain injury as a result of the US engagement on the Global War on Terrorism. A December 2011 Pew Research Center study found 27% of returning veterans said they had a difficult time transitioning to civilian life, up 44% among veterans who served since 2001.

“There are a lot of choices that our soldiers can make with their benefits

but you would be hard pressed to find a school that offers veterans more op-portunities to be involved and to succeed than here at Vanguard,” said Kupitz winding down his speech. “My wish is that more colleges and universities will model themselves after Vanguard by putting the programs into place to leave no veteran behind.”

The Veterans Day Celebration ended on a jubilant note, with veterans stand-ing proudly as the Vanguard Saxophone Quartet played the Armed Forces Salute medley including The Caissons Song (Army), Marine’s Hymn, Anchors Aweigh (Navy), The U.S. Air Force song and Semper Paratus (Coast Guard).

It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier’s checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings as-sociation, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. Said sale will be made, in an ‘’AS IS’’ condition, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed of Trust, advances thereunder, with interest as provided, and the unpaid principal of the Note secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said Note, plus fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. If required by the provisions of section 2923.5 of the California Civil Code, the declaration from the mortgagee, beneficiary or authorized agent is attached to the Notice of Trustee’s Sale duly recorded with the appropriate County Recorder’s Office. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this In-ternet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 11-0102847. Enveloping the audience in a magni-tude of musical splendors, the $3.1-mil-lion William J. Gillespie Concert Organ, played by world-renowned organist Todd Wilson, captures the beauty, range and colors of popular and traditional holiday music during Pacific Symphony’s annual “Holiday Organ Spectacular.” Unique arrangements illuminate the talent of Wilson, Broadway star Lisa Vroman and accompanying principal Symphony mu-sicians: Benjamin Smolen, flute; Barry Perkins, trumpet and Mindy Ball, harp. Joining the Symphony for the third year, Wilson, head of the organ department at The Cleveland Institute of Music and curator of the E.M. Skinner pipe organ at Severance Hall, also performs organ works by Bach and Handel. This concert takes place one night only, Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, with the Foothill High Dickens Carolers serenading an hour before the concert begins. Tickets are $25-75; for more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.Pacific-Symphony.org.

“This will be a wonderful and unique combination of musical arrangements customized for this particular concert,” says singing sensation Vroman, who starred for several years on Broadway as Christine Daae in Andrew Lloyd Web-ber’s “The Phantom of the Opera.” “The organ is an amazing instrument and able to create so many different sounds and colors; in a way, it is its own orchestra! The main difference in singing with the organ is that I will be on a microphone to compete with the organ’s sound, which is immense in the hall. But it’s not only me onstage with the organ. We also have Ben Smolen, Barry Perkins and Mindy Ball. It’s a pleasure to make music with just a few instruments and give the audience a more intimate look at the collaboration—and a chance to hear some of their favorite members of Pacific Symphony shine on their own!”

The program features well-known and cherished Christmas songs including: Handel’s “Let the Bright Seraphim,” from “Samson,” “O Holy Night” “God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen,” “The Little Drummer Boy,” “Sleigh Ride,” “Let It Snow,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and much more! Furthering the yuletide spirit, the audience is invited to join the performers in singing along to classic holiday favorites “The Holly and the Ivy,” “Deck the Halls,” “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World.”

Symphony Flutist Smolen offers some thoughts on his instrument’s role in tradi-tional Christmas music: “One of my fa-vorite parts of the Christmas Eve service growing up was hearing the choir sing the descant lines to my favorite carols

like ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing.’ The flute often takes on this role, especially in music of the holiday season, adding soaring counter-melodies to familiar carols. I think the combination of organ, flute, trumpet and harp is especially poi-gnant given the significance of all these instruments in Biblical literature and in the history of the church. Music was an important part of Biblical life, and flutes, trumpets and harps often took center stage in important festivals and praise. The combination with organ recalls that instrument’s long history in church life and the countless sacred works it has inspired over the centuries.

“I think audience members will re-ally enjoy discovering some of the beautiful but lesser-known carols we are preparing, and also participating in the sing-alongs of many Christmas favorites such as ‘Deck the Halls’ and ‘Silent Night,’” Smolen continues. “The sense of community and celebration should make for a really special, festive experience.”

Regarded across America and around the world as one of today’s finest concert organists, Wilson is the director of music and worship at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Cleveland. He also

serves as house organist for the newly restored Aeolian organ at the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron, Ohio. He has performed in major cities throughout the United States, Europe and Japan, including concerts at Sym-phony Hall in Birmingham, UK, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Severance Hall in Cleveland, Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas and Uihlein Hall in Milwaukee. His latest CDs on the JAV label feature a live recital of American music from the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and “Live from Severence Hall,” a concert of music for trumpet and organ.

Vroman garnered Theatre Critic’s awards for her Broadway role as Chris-tine Daae in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” during a record-breaking run in San Francisco, and she also had a return engagement at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Ange-les. In 2008, Vroman made her Carn-egie Hall debut with the New York Pops, starred as Lili Vanessi in “Kiss Me Kate” with Glimmerglass Opera, sang the role of Birdie in “Regina” with Utah Opera, made her New Jersey Opera debut as Rosalinda in “Die Fledermaus,” and premiered two Comic Operas by com-posers John Musto and William Bolcom with the New York Festival of Song. She is a frequent guest soloist with major theatre and opera companies as well as orchestras.
