The Sacramento Blues Society (SBS) is one of the oldest blues societies in California, founded in 1979. SBS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed to preserve and promote blues music as an art form.

SBS has kept the blues tradition alive in the Sacramento area by promoting the local blues music scene, bringing internationally renowned artists to the region and

publishing the “Blue Notes” six times a year for our membership. SBS is an affiliate member of The Blues Foundation, and provides

educational opportunities for young people with The Blues Foundation’s “Blues In The Schools” Program.

What are your priorities? It is amazing how many friends I have who own a guitar or two and love music but when I ask them if they are still playing they say, no, they just don't have time. The truth is there is never enough time to do everything we want to do in a 24 hour day, but that doesn't mean that you can't make music a priority. A few years back I was at dinner with a good friend of mine in the furniture business. Ron is also a tal-ented singer and occasionally sings with bands. Our discussion turned to music and Ron told me about a conversation he'd had with a gui-tar player recently. Ron told this guitarist, "I wish I could play guitar as well as you!" and the guitar player replied, "No you don't, because if you wanted to play guitar you would, you would play a little every day and soon you would be a great player”.

To this day I still remember that conversation with my friend and I have tried to "Make Time for the Blues" and practice a little every day. Today I am proud to say I can hold my own on stage and have a blast doing it. What are your priori-ties? Do you make time to play your harmonica, bass or guitar a little every day? Do you volun-teer to help out at some of our Society’s fun con-certs and events? Hey, I bet your Grandmother told you, "You get out of life what you put into

it”. How will you become a bet-ter musician or singer if you don't practice? How will our Sacramento Blues Society be-come a better organization if you don't volunteer?

I wish to thank the Committee and all of our Hall of Fame Volun-teers for making the 2014 HOF Party such a blast! And congratulations to the new Hall of Fame members! Lou and Jimmy were wonderful playing their acoustic blues set. Gary Mendoza’s band then did a great job playing and narrating Nan Mahon’s A Musical History of the Blues. Thanks to all past and present Hall of Fame in-ductees for making Sacramento a great music town. Of course, it is not possible without each of you making time for the blues.

On a final note, as we continue developing our on-line presence, we are planning to send the Blue Notes electronically in the near future. You will receive your Blue Notes sooner, and color print-ing will be throughout rather than confined to the front and back pages. Do we have your current e-mail address? 2014 Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame Ceremonies

September 28th, 2014 was such a special day. It was quite exciting to look out the doors and see the line around the block. Not only were we sharing the musical story of the history of the blues with our Blues Society, but we were in-ducting five new members into the Sacramento Blues Society’s Hall of Fame. The excitement was building indoors and outdoors waiting for the show at Harlow’s to begin! The Hall of Fame Committee works hard for months coming to a decision on who should be inducted each year, and this year was no differ-ent. The 2014 inductees are well-known to the

blues community: Aaron King, Derek Washington, Jan Kelley, Joe Lev and Marshal Wilkerson.

Once the doors opened and guests were seated with their various refreshments, Jimmy Pailer and Lew Fratis, 2013 Hall of Fame honorees, gave us a fantastic acoustic set to start the event. Gary Mendoza, emcee extraordi-

naire, introduced the Socie-ty’s President, Jimmy Ree-go, who gave a little history on the Society attaining its 35th Anniversary, stating “we are the second oldest

Blues Society west of the Mississippi”. Jimmy thanked everyone for being there, congratulated the inductees, and introduced the current Board members. Liz Walker, Blues In The Schools (BITS) chairperson, took the podium and gave the history of the Society’s BITS program and thanked all who have participated over the years. Sally Katen gave us the back-ground and process of the Society’s Hall of Fame. She urged members to take part in the process and encouraged the blues com-munity to submit names for induction each year. “Nominating deserving musicians is probably the most important step in the process, as the Com-mittee needs nominations to consider induction to this prestigious group from the area’s blues community. If there are no nominations, there are no inductees!”

Next, Sally introduced the annual recognition of local musicians that are no longer with us. Gone But Not Forgotten had a new look with the help of Lena Mosley, Bob Cosman and Jan Kelley, who developed a slide show to recognize our fallen blues community friends. Gary Mendoza accompanied the show, playing harmonica and singing gospel. As each person’s image was projected, murmured memories and silent tears were shared. A Musical History of the Blues, a musical story writ-ten by Society member Nan Mahon, produced by Gary Mendoza and performed by members of the Gary Mendoza Band (Stephen Kimball/Guitar, Dave Segal/Bass and John Newby on Drums) was a well-received addition to this year’s event. What a show! The story reflects the birth of the blues and on through the blues influence on rock and roll, with band members and added musi-cians depicting various historical musicians. Theris Coats narrated the story as written by Nan, speaking as the Ghost of Muddy Waters. He was joined by musicians Leo Bootes as Mud-dy Waters (vocals and slide guitar) and Todd Morgan as Otis Spann and Jerry Lee Lewis on piano. What a compliment he paid to Jerry Lee Lewis on the piano!! Our own 2011 HOF Hon-oree Lena Mosley was Bessie Smith and our stu-dents that joined the group were Kory Gibbs and Xach Wagner, both on guitar. It was extremely informative and entertaining. stories to share with the audience in turn, captivating the audience along with laughter and tears. Many great gifts were raffled off that brought a lot of excitement to the event. The final act of the Musical History of the Blues was performed and

once all accolades and congratulations conclud-ed, thanks given, photos taken, etc., folks head-ed for the Torch Club for the SBS HOF Show-case. The Showcase started with new and previous HOF Members jamming togeth-er. If you have not seen Aaron King play in a while, you missed him at his best! Joe Lev was on bass, ‘Ratatat’ Pat on the drums, Catfish played guitar, Dr. Derek played his horn and Marshal sang! All the while new and old HOF Members got up and played. The music was

awesome and hosted by 2010 HOF Member John-ny “Guitar” Knox. The Torch Club is the SBS HOF home, as the Torch Club owner and

2012 HOF inductee Marina Texeira has donated a wall to the Sacramento Blues Society to house the HOF photos and ban-ner. If you have not seen the wall, redone this year, it is worth a stop.

Sally Katen then called each inductee to come up while she hung their picture on the wall and pronounced that they were now SBS HOF Members.

Thanks to everyone who came and showed sup-port for this event! With your support, it will hap-pen again next year. I have a great committee and our job is to go through the names we get each year, do bios on everyone and figure out not only who is deserv-ing, but who does our SBS members want to be inducted? If there is anything I can ask a SBS member to do, it is to send in nominations. Send in as many different names as you want each year, but send them. We have made it easy to nominate - go to sacblues.com, click on the HOF link and then click on the nomination link and it will come directly to me! I get a lot of questions all year round, i.e. “Why hasn't so and so been inducted?” And my response is “Have you nomi-nated them?” How are we to know you want a special person to be inducted if you don't tell us? I would also like to give a big thank you to all that helped and volunteered this year! I want to

thank my cousin Barbara Katen who hung out and helped the last couple of days when we were down to the wire and things needed to be done, and to Pat Altenberg for the use of her projector. To Dana Moret for her ideas and publicity, you are the best! Our Photographer Bob Cosman for all he does to assist the Hall of Fame. History of the Sacramento Blues Society—By Jan Kelley

In 1979, during a production of the Sacramento Blues Festival produced by Phil Givant, signa-tures were gathered to start a Sacramento Blues Society (SBS). The first meeting was held at the Holiday Inn South on Fruitridge Road, with more than 50 attending. Some of those attending were Phil Givant, Mick Martin, Jeff Hughson, Sheila Hembury, Claudia Shane, Nat Stenhouse, Johnie and Zeola Lewis, Carrie Jean Denson and Derek Washington. Mick chose to recuse himself in or-der to write about the activities of the SBS in the Sacramento Union, for which he was the enter-tainment writer.

As the level of interest increased, so did the membership. Soon the SBS started producing Blues events once a month, contributing to their finances in order to continue producing such events and bring in Blues artists, such as Roy Brown, Johnnie Johnson and George “Harmonica” Smith in the early days. Phil Givant was also responsible for bringing in Blues stars BB King, Bobby Blue Bland, Koko Taylor, Little Milton, Little Richard, and others for SBS shows, held mostly in the old Memorial Auditorium. Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, Mark Hummel, and the Robert Cray Band would play for the door many times, which couldn’t have been much, since admission was rarely more than $5.00! Later, Guitar Shorty, Red Archibald, Kenny Neal, Tommy Castro and many more artists would be featured. In addition, the SBS always had at least one local band to open for these artists, thereby giving a sense of community and sharing of the Blues.

Blues music could be found in all corners of Sac-ramento during this time, at such venues as Tootsie’s in Old Sacramento, where Blues gigs were occurring every Wednesday and Thursday night. Of course, the Torch Club was also a sev-en day a week go-to place for Blues for a long time; Melarkey’s was a favorite place for the SBS gigs and meetings; Sam’s Hof Brau; The Gradu-ate on University Ave; Galactica on 15th St; Car-los Murphy’s at Cal Expo; Harry’s Bar and Grill; Hogshead Brewpub; the Press Club; the Shire Road Pub featured rock-n-roll as well as Blues acts; and many parks also held Blues gigs – Southside, Tahoe, William Land Park, etc. Blues could be found everywhere! In the days before computers and social media, the SBS even had a ‘hot line’, which kept current Blues events an-nounced, mainly by Ken Jackson, for many

years.

In 1980, a forerunner of the pre-sent SBS was formed by Phil Givant and approximately 15 other Blues lovers. This organization was incorporated and a set of by-laws were formally adopted. During the mid-1980’s, the organization went through a dormant period caused, in part, by financial mismanage-ment. The organization was resurrected in 1987 by a few true blue believers. In 1992, the present day SBS was formally incorporated and a new set of bylaws were drafted and assumed to have been adopted.

In December of 1993, it was discovered that for-mal adoption of the 1992 bylaws had, in fact, never taken place. Consequently, the 1992 in-corporators were legally responsible for admin-istering and governing the SBS, including fiduci-ary responsibility. The Board of Directors spent many hours developing new bylaws, utilizing the bylaws from 1980 and 1992 developed by the SBS, as well as other non-profit organizations. On March 8, 1994, these bylaws were formally adopted and legalized.

By the turn of the century and leading into 2000/2001, the SBS had become an established entity for bringing in Blues music for all to enjoy, and wanted to expand their outreach to the Blues community as a whole.

In the early years of SBS, a Blues In The Schools (BITS) program was started, with the assistance of program criteria of musician Fruteland Jack-son. The initial effort didn’t survive, mainly due to lack of financial support. However, the BITS program was again formed in 2003/04 and is continuing to evolve and expand, reaching many students in different counties within the Sacra-mento region. Their success is due to the dedi-cated leadership of a few as well as the volun-teer musicians giving of their time and talent.

In 2008, the Sacramento Blues Society estab-lished the Hall of Fame, which promotes recogni-tion of Blues artists and promoters in the Sacra-mento region by honoring a minimum of three people a year. The criteria was ascertained to include those who have a minimum of 20 years of Blues participation, made a historical contribu-tion, and/or had an impact and overall influence on the Sacramento Blues community.

The Gene Chambers Musicians Crisis Fund was established by a generous donation from Kim Chambers after the passing of her husband Gene, a 2008 Hall of Fame inductee and a long-time Sacramento Blues musician, teacher and mentor who always cared deeply about the Blues scene and Blues musicians in the area.

WOW! Everyone is still talking about our SBS

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held in Sep-

tember. It was a fabulous event and we all con-

gratulate the new Hall of Fame members and

give our thanks to Sally Katen for putting on such

an awesome day of friends, fun, and fantastic

music. It was such a joy to be in the presence of

those dedicated inductees and members who

have given so much to all of us for so many

years. They truly deserve the recognition they

received.

As 2014 comes to an end, we are going to cele-

brate the 35th anniversary of the Sacramento

Blues Society in a grand way by bringing you

some of the very best entertainment. Our annual

Member Party will be held on Saturday, Decem-

ber 6 at the VFW Hall – Post 67 located on Stock-

ton Blvd. This annual event is an opportunity for

SBS to show appreciation to all of our members

by offering a fabulous time together with great

music. And it is all FREE to all members. If you

aren’t a member yet, you may join now by visiting

www.sacblues.com and follow the prompts. We

will also be selling and renewing memberships at

the Member Party. Doors will open at 2:30 and

the music will begin at 3:00 p.m.

And now, here is the entertainment that has been

scheduled for your listening and dancing pleas-

ure: This year's headliner will be longtime Mud-

dy Waters band member Bob Margolin with spe-

cial guest harmonica great Bob Corritore! Also

on this bill is our own ever-popular and talented

Jeramy Norris & The Dangerous Mood. Ladies

and gentlemen, prepare to have a party! These

are some of the very best artists in the land and

we will have them all in the same place at the

same time to honor our SBS members.

I’d like to share a few facts about our headliners

that you may not know:

Bob Margolin is a Blues guitarist and singer

who played in Muddy Waters' band from 1973

-'80. He tours worldwide today as a ban-

dleader or guest with both legendary blues

and contemporary musicians, delivering ex-

citing Blues guitar and an entertaining,

friendly stage presence. He is a founding

Foundation, and leads work-

shops worldwide in Blues Gui-

tar. He received the 2013

azine Blues Revue. In 2011, his eBook

Steady Rollin' was published. In 2013, Bob

was nominated for The Blues Foundation's

Blues Music Award for Traditional Male Blues

Artist. He has won Blues Music Awards for

guitar in 2005 and 2008.

Bob will be joined by Delta Groove artist Bob

Corritore.

Bob Corritore is one of the most active and

highly regarded blues harmonica players on

the scene today, with over 50 releases under

various labels to date. Nominated for multi-

ple awards, Bob is also widely recognized for

his many roles in the blues, as band leader,

club owner, record producer, radio show

host, arts foundation founder, and occasional

writer. His amazing website http://

newsletter reflect a life thoroughly invested in

the blues.

We intend to end this year with a bang! But we

haven’t even begun to slow down. Our Events

Committee is busy working on scheduling events

for the coming year. Stay tuned folks – we’re go-

ing to do the next year up Blues Style!

The Events Committee gives our heartfelt thanks

and deepest gratitude for all of the members who

came out to help by volunteering to assist at our

events this past year. We couldn’t have done it

without you! We are always in need of volun-

teers and we really appreciate all that you do for

Do you enjoy the annual party for members? The local band competition to see who the Society will sponsor to enter the International Blues Competition in Memphis? The annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies? The Sacramento Blues Society is an all-volunteer organization. We need YOU to help keep the Blues Alive in Sacramento! We are a 501(c)(3) tax deductible nonprofit organization that de-pends on grants, contributions, and volunteers like you to operate. Board members are also vol-unteers and do not receive compensation for their service. There are several volunteer opportunities. We always need people to help out at events at the Membership and Donor Gifts Tables. Donor Gifts involves helping to set up and display the gifts available for donation, knowing the mini-

mum donation for each type of gift and collect-ing the donations. Membership involves interacting with interested parties by explaining the benefits of levels of membership in the SBS, proofreading the appli-cations, explaining and collecting the annual cost for the type of membership chosen. Check page two for all the committees. If you have a little time for any of these activities, please con-sider volunteering. Please see below for a specific and very im-portant volunteer position that we are attempt-ing to fill at this time. have them there. I heard several comments from

them that they especially enjoyed the History of

the Blues presentation. When I spoke of BITS

and the appreciation we have of all those who

have helped the program I failed to mention the

biggest supporters of all – the musicians who

bring their talent and passion to the program.

Thank you. BITS would be nowhere without all of

you!

It’s hard to believe that another calendar year is

drawing to a close, but for BITS we’re just get-

ting started. With school back in session we’re

busy making plans for our after school programs

and more presentations. The annual strategic

planning meeting is coming up and the commit-

tee is trying to remember all the ideas and sug-

gestions we’ve heard over the year.

And speaking of strategic plan, we have a com-

pleted item! BITS is so excited to announce that

the cd with songs written by students is hot off

the press and ready for your enjoyment. Please

pick up a copy whenever you see a SBS table at

an event or you can order one off our website

The SBS Hall of Fame show in September was a

premier event. Congratulations to the inductees

(including BITS’ own Joe Lev.) We would like to

mission to preserve and promote American

Blues Music. We do this through an assortment

of ways: the Gene Chambers Musicians Crisis

Fund which assists member musicians in emer-

gencies, the Hall Of Fame which recognizes indi-

viduals that strengthened our blues community,

the annual contest to send a representative to

Memphis to compete in the International Blues

Competition, and a Blues In The Schools pro-

gram that presents programs in schools and af-

ter-school programs, and by co-sponsoring and

supporting various shows and venues in the

community. The Board of Directors works to-

gether to manage these activities and is respon-

There are seven Board positions to be filled, six

of those will be 2-year terms, and the other will

be a one year term. Each year, one-half of the

members of the Board are up for election. This

system assures that at least one-half of the

Board members have experience and can assist

new Board members fulfill their corporate du-

ties.

US mail or hand delivered at the annual SBS

Membership Party on that date. Ballots will be

counted and the 2015 Board of Directors will be

announced at the end of the Membership Party.

He may not live in our community, however he does belong to the Blues community. One of Steve’s photos became the logo for the Society’s Hall of Fame and is on every post-er.

Steve says: “My sister Mary is the one that piqued my interest in photography as she

was an avid amateur photographer…when you would actually use film and at times would develop your own pictures. Making a long story short, she sent me a little Kodak 3MP digital camera about twelve years ago that really made my interest grow in taking pic-tures. It was a shot of Shane Dwight taken

up in St. Helena that made me realize that I could take a decent picture of artists per-forming music. That got me going and I began taking more and more shots.“

“I have learned to love photography and I take great pleasure when people want to use my photos. It is an even bigger treat when artists want to use your pictures for their Facebook page, CDs or for a newspa-per or maga-zine article. I also do a blues radio show from KRVM in Eugene, Ore-gon on Sunday morning.”
