WKENNETH GAN IS THE REBORN SWIMMER AND TRIATHLETETHE SWIMMEISTER

INTERVIEW AND PHOTOS BY ADAM YAP KEH CHEW • ART DIRECTION BY MIKKE GALLARDO

Kenneth Gan was a natural water-baby and took to the water like a fish. He swam competitively during his secondary school days, and while studying at Singapore Polytechnic from 2000 to 2002, he was the vice-captain of the water polo team. He took a break on land during his National Service (NS) period.

After NS, he enrolled in University College London in the United Kingdom and joined the water polo team to keep fit. Unfortunately, he sustained a shoulder injury as the university’s student-athlete and gradually stopped his training. His determination to be active again, however, pushed him to undergo a shoulder operation in

Singapore during a summer holiday break. Recovery took time, and for the last two years he stayed in the university, he didn’t touch water again. Back in Singapore after his studies to pass the Individual Physical Proficiency Test for Operationally Ready National Servicemen or NSman, he ran to regain his fitness. Fueled by his love for water, he swam again. He completed his first multisport race, Singapore Biathlon 2011, and then quickly progressed to triathlon within the year. In 2012, he challenged himself with his first full Ironman at Port Macquarie, Australia, and finished it. The rest is, as you can say, triathlon history.
