Questions 26 – 31 are based on the following passage.

Environmental issues is a topic concerning all mankind. We often have to
jostle with many other concerns such as economic development, crime, race
relations, education and healthcare. The environment is often solely seen as a
future problem, and something the average person cannot do much about.
“ For a developing country to put environmental awareness as a priority, there
has to be a paradigm change,” says Dr Reza Azmi, founder and executive director
of Wild Asia. “ Profits cannot be the ultimate bottom line. Countries need to look long and hard at the natural resources around them and create policies to protect
and manage these resources, as well as enforce regulations to safeguard their
assets.”
“ The biggest hurdle facing environmentalists lies in convincing the public and
decision makers that, despite all our technology, we as a human race remain
crucially dependent on a well-functioning, robust natural environment,” says Dr
William Barron of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. “In short, it
is convincing people that environmental protection is not a luxury, but a
necessity.” The challenge is to make people realise that they are part of the
environment, not separate from it. It is getting increasingly difficult, as more and
more people live in urban areas and are increasingly detached from nature.
Environmentalists also need to present their message in an attractive manner in
order to better make themselves heard. Consequently, they are often perceived as
being anti-development or against progress or modernisation, especially in
developing countries, putting them in an opposing position in relation to
policymakers.
“ We‟ve taken the environment for granted for much too long, but we are
making good progress in changing the way we look at it and treat it”, says Satwant
Kaur, regional information officer with the United Nations Environment
Programme in Bangkok. “Throughout Asia, you just have to flip through a
newspaper, switch on a TV channel or look at billboards on the streets and there
are chances you‟ll come across environment - related messages several times a
day.”

Environmental awareness in Malaysia is relatively high compared to other
Southeast Asian countries, and definitely on par with Indonesia, Philippines and
Thailand. But awareness and doing something are separate. Awareness is a productof the efforts of the media and the government. Doing something requires action
by the public.
Dr Sundari Ramakrishna, acting conservation director of WWF-Malaysia,
points to examples of how communities address environmental issues such as river
and beach clean-up initiatives, their outspokenness against cruelty, poaching and
wildlife smuggling, their readiness to take personal action and encourage others to
minimise waste, as well as their support for energy and water saving efforts.
Simple actions can make a big difference, say environmental observers. “Stop
littering, bring reusable bags when shopping, reduce food wastage, practice car
pooling, recycle and reuse, conserve power, paper and water, and collect rain
water for use in gardening and washing,” urges DL Ho, chairman of the Waste
Management Association of Malaysia, adding that his organisation regularly
conducts seminars and conferences to promote green technology and practices, and
also provides competency training to upgrade the standard of waste management in
the country.
Habits are changing bit by bit, and change is a good thing, says Reza. But thequestion is how ready people are to make real changes to their lifestyles.

32. Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow.
IN THE MIDST OF
HARDSHIP
by Latiff Mohidin
At dawn they returned home
their soaky clothes torn
and approached the stove
their limbs marked by scratches
their legs full of wounds
but on their brows
there was not a sign of despair
The whole day and night just passed
they had to brave the horrendous flood
in the water all the time
between bloated carcasses
and tiny chips of tree barks
desperately looking for their son‟s
albino buffalo that was never found
There were born amidst hardship
and grew up without a sigh or a complaint
now they are in the kitchen, making
jokes while rolling their cigarette leaves

HE HAD SUCH QUIET EYES
By Bibsy Soenharjo He had such quiet eyes
She did not realise
They were two pools of lies
Layered with thinnest ice

Were breathing desolate sighs
Imploring her to be nice
And to render him paradise
If only she‟d been wise
And had listened to the adviceNever to compromise
With pleasure-seeking guys
She‟d be free from “the hows and whys”
Now here‟s a bit of advice
Be sure that nice really means niceThen you‟ll never be losing at dice
