Class of 1958
Joseph Sanders Penn Valley, CA [email protected]
“ My father was stationed at Anderson Air Foce Base in 1957-1958 and I attended the 8th grade at Santa Barbara school. My teacher was Sister Mary David. In later years I think about my experience on Guam as very unique as it was only ~13years after the war and Guam was very rural in those days. I enjoyed the tropical weather and the beautiful beaches. I worked in San Jose, CA (Silicon Valley) in the semiconductor manufacturing business and retired in 2008 and now live in Grass Valley, CA in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

“ While I was attending Santa Barbara I was inspired by two of my teachers, Sister Mary Perpetua, Sister Margaret Mary. I have since attending there became a member of the Church and have found much comfort doing the Rosary that I was taught while being a student there. I make rosaries for those who do not have one, for individuals that are doing their first communion as well as for babies that are born. I want to thank the Sisters there for showing me a different side of Guam than just being a military brat. It is so good to see how much it has grown since I was there. I am also glad to see that the practice of the red and white uniforms is still practiced. Pam (Altman) Gee

“ My days at Santa Barbara School were inspirational in my decision to become an educator. Graduating in 1967 the friendships made and the guidance of the sisters from the school are some of my best childhood moments. My father was in the U.S.A.F stationed on Guam at the time. Returning to the U.S. I finished my high school years in Kansas and Ohio, enlisted in the U.S.A.F. during the Vietnam War, and returned to Ohio and married Joyce Boch at Saint Mary's Church in Lancaster, Ohio in 1977. We have two grown sons, Matt and Michael both married. I received my BS Ed. from The Ohio State University 1979 and my MS Ed. from the catholic University of Dayton in 1986. I retired from education in 2007 and presently play music professionally. I miss those warm Guam breezes and the beautiful school Santa Barbara. God Bless all alumni!

“ I went to 4th grade at SBCS, which I called Dededo School, in 1962. I remember Typhoon Karen. My dad was in the Air Force and we were stationed at Anderson AFB. My year or so that I went to SBCS is the only time that I remember from my early school years. I absolutely loved being there! I remember the statue of the patron saint who supposedly had cried during WWII and was the only thing that didn't burn on a float. It had donated hair that had to be cut. Supposedly the statue was found with coconut crabs in the ocean. I also remember how we would play limbo and the double stick dancing (?) at recess and how we performed the song, "The Happy Wanderer" several times. The nuns were quite patient with me, because I would frequently flip my pencil and would be on the floor "looking" for it. They also encouraged me to write poetry and songs and present them to the class. I would love to correspond with someone who has early memories of "DedeDo School". P.S. My last name now is Winckler.

“Congratulations SBCS on your 60th Anniversary!
I love Santa Barbara Catholic School! My entire family went to SBCS, to include my Mom and Dad's family (The Guerrero's & Hernandez'). Family unity was very true and unique at SBCS. I will always value the caring atmosphere at SBCS. I absolutely agree that SBCS is known for educating mind, heart and spirit. Growing up in Dededo village, my family was close to the church, always asking what can we do to help. They never wanted anything in return. When you know you're really needed to assist in any way at SBCS or Santa Barbara Catholic Church, it's a great feeling. Respecting all is what I've learned, it didn't matter what nationality you were or where you came from. Learning initially starts at the homefront, continuing to enhance what you've learned by setting your foundation at a school institution, such as SBCS, I believe, success and happiness will follow. Be true to your Heart and Trust in God completely. Thank you to Sister Jeanette Marie Pangelinan and her staff, and to all the past Principals and staff, whom has dedicated their love and support to my family, relatives and friends. "Happy 60th Anniversary SBCS!!...and many more to come!!! We're happy to be a part of this prestigious celebration.
Love, Peace and God Bless, Mr. & Mrs. Ron & Lily Hernandez Santos (children: Ronnie Jr., Camarin Kristyne ( 2007) & Rai Adrian Jude).

“ Hello! Although I did not graduate from SB, I consider it my home base anyway. I came in in the middle of 5th grade, Mr. McGloin was my teacher. I came from the Philippines and I wasn't quite comfortable speaking English yet. Nevertheless, that first year in Guam has made such an impression on me that when I think back on those days, it's like it happened just yesterday. The most memorable teacher I had was Sister Orlean. I loved my 6th grade class! We would begin our day with singing and end our days likewise. She is one of my teachers who influenced me in becoming a teacher as well. I am also a 6th grade teacher and I try to share with my students the same enthusiasm that Sister Orlean shared with us back then. It is a tough crowd, but our class was very creative!. I remember having many art moments which also influenced me in getting a Fine Arts degree as well. I loved every moment of my time in SB. It gave me a pretty solid base in American education which I am truly appreciative of. Thank you for allowing me to share this with you! Karoll

“ Mrs. Murdock, Sister Bernadette, Mr. Bengie, Mrs. Sood, Mrs. Atoigue (2nd grade teacher), Father Rudy and many others whom I had the pleasure of knowing that has provided me with the insight to further my education. I had numerous fond memories of the school, but if I was to single out one particular event, then it would be that time the 1990 won the volleyball title amongst all the middle school in the island. That was an amazing year for us.

“ I attended SBS from 1993-1995, then again in 1999-2002. I was the granddaughter of Mrs. Ryan, who was also my PE teacher in Kinder and 1st grade. I remember my favorite teachers were Mrs. Suplido, Mr. Riggs, Mr. Babia and Ms. Vida. oh and coach Burn! After graduation, I moved back to California and graduated from Lemoore High School (Lemoore, CA) 2006. I am now a member of the United States Air Force. I joined in November 2007. I hold the rank of Senior Airman, hopefully will be promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant this year. I have been stationed in Germany, Turkey and will be soon getting transferred to Maryland. I deployed to Iraq in 2010 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. My favorite memories of SBS were when myself, Angelica Tapeceria, Kristine May Bataclan, Cristina and Melissa Tabet were on the basketball team. We had so much playing basketball for the school. I miss hanging out at my grandma's office in the back side of the cafeteria. Those were the good ol' days. I miss SBS and Guam and hope to come visit soon, hopefully some of my old teachers are still teaching there! - Sandy

“ It's this simple. Many say the greatest time of your life will be in your high school years or college. Mine was my years from Kinder to 8th grade at SBCS. Our batch had chemistry and a strong connection, not to mention "boys and girls volleyball champions" from the 2003. God Bless and may you continue to teach children to be generous, responsible and independent. Most of all, to love one another.

“ There are 3 things that inspired me to do well in life; GOD, cause he is your guidance through it all; my daughter and my wife, cause they give me the strenght everyday and my grand parents, they taught me to fight strong and believe. My most memorable time in SBCS is when we went to the basketball championship against Anderson. We lost but we made it all the way in 2nd place. Our coach Roger Ramos was the best coach i ever had. If i was to define CHAMPION it would be Roger Ramos.

“ Ever since I graduated Santa Barbara Catholic School six years ago, I still remember the teachings that my teachers taught me. Going to school at SBCS helped me build a strong foundation in my life. The school gave me the knowledge of faith and taught me to live life based on the teachings of God. My teachers were outstanding, and inspiring. Without their teachings, I may not be the person I am today. I consider myself lucky going to SBCS, and I always thank my parents for enrolling me there because I learned a lot. The knowledge of faith that will forever be in my life. And the teachings that I learned, I share with my friends and fellow soldiers that were blind with faith.
