Today’s Gospel Reading - Luke 22: 24-30 A dispute also arose among them, which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For which is the greater, one who sits at table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at table? But I am among you as one who serves." You are those who have continued with me in my trials; and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

FEAST DAYS Saturday, December 28th was the feast of. Saints James the Apostle and John the Evangelist,

sons of Thunder

Apostle James “Son of Thunder”

Apostle James, Son of Zebedee, one of the twelve Apostles, was called by the Lord for apostolic service together with his brother Apostle John the Theologian. It was to them and to the Apostle Peter that Christ revealed His Divine Mysteries: at the Resuscitation of the Daughter of Jairus, on Mount Tabor (at the Transfiguration), and in the Garden of Gethsemane.

The unbelieving among the Jews persuaded Herod Agrippa (40-44) to arrest the Apostle James and sentence him to death. When they took the apostle to his execution, Josiah fell at his feet, repenting his sin and asking forgiveness. The apostle hugged him and said: "Peace and forgiveness be unto thee." Then Josiah confessed before everyone his faith in Christ, and he was beheaded together with Saint James in the year 44 in Jerusalem.

Apostle and Evangelist John “Son of Thunder”

The Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian was the son of Zebedee and Salomia -- a daughter of Saint Joseph the Betrothed. Together at the same time with his elder brother James, he was called by the Lord Jesus Christ to be numbered amongst His Apostles.

Saint John the Theologian was present when the Lord resurrected to life the daughter of Jairus, and he was a witness to the Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor. After the Assumption (Dormition) of Mary the Mother of God, Apostle John, in accord with the lot that had befallen him, set off to Ephesus and other cities of Asia Minor to preach the Gospel.

The Apostle John was sentenced to death for his confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, but the Lord preserved His chosen one. After this, they sent the Apostle John off to imprisonment to the island of Patmos, where he spent many years. Proceeding along on his way to the place of exile, the Apostle John worked many miracles. On the island of Patmos, his preaching accompanied by miracles attracted to him all the inhabitants of the island, and he enlightened them with the light of the Gospel.

WHAT IS ADVENT?

"Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand." (James 5:8)

Advent means “coming”—the coming of Christ. In Armenian it is called Hisnag from the word for “fifty.” Counting backwards fifty days from January 6 brings us to November 18, the nearest Sunday being Hisnagatz Paregentan which may fall on any day between November 15 and 21. Advent is the 50-day period during which we prepare to celebrate the Nativity and Theophany of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is a time for prayer, reflection, devotion to Scripture, fasting, and service for us to think about the ‘why’ of Christmas—why the greeting cards, the decorations, the gifts, the family gatherings? A time to look within our hearts to see if there is anything that stands between us and the Good News of Jesus’ birth.

During Advent, we can rededicate ourselves to Christ through our actions, thoughts, and prayers. This is a

good time for us to improve our habits and offer them as gifts to God. Perhaps Advent can also be an occasion

to discover God’s gifts all around us. We need to have an open heart to receive Christ—God’s greatest gift

of all!

GUIDE TO PARTICIPATING IN THE DIVINE LITURGY

Did You Know? The word ‘liturgy’ is derived from Ancient Greek, and literally means “the work of the people.” We encourage all our parishioners to fully participate in the Divine Liturgy. Please follow the prayers and hymns in the Divine Liturgy books provided in the pews. The

first half contains the Armenian (Krapar) text and modern Armenian translation, while the second half provides the English transliteration and translation. Page numbers are illuminated at the upper left and right sides of the main altar. Finally, please sing along!

When using the responses below, please feel free to use Armenian or English. Response when Kissing the Cross (during the procession):

The faithful say: |i,;s=ir ;u xis a5a=i anmaf ga5inn Astou6o\! Hee-shes-cheer yev zeez arachee anmah Karinn Asdoodzo. Remember me before the immortal Lamb of God.

The priest says: |i,;al li=ir a5a=i anmaf ga5inn Astou6o\! Hee-shyal lee-cheer a-rra-chee an-mah ka-rinn As-doo-dzo. You shall be remembered before the immortal Lamb of God.

Response for the Kiss of Peace (Page 26-27): The giver says: Qristos i mh= m;r \a\tn;zau! Krees-dos ee mech mer hayd-ne-tsav. Christ is revealed in our midst.

The receiver says: &rfn;al h \a\tnoujiunn Qristosi! Orh-nyal eh hayd-noo-tyoo-nun Krees-do-see. Blessed is the revelation of Christ.

Response when Kissing the Gospel (after the Divine Liturgy):

The faithful say: |i,;szh Thr xam;na\n patarags qo! Hee-shes-tseh Der za-me-nayn ba-da-ra-kus ko. Maythe Lord remember all your sacrifices.

The priest says: Tazh q;x Thr est srti qoum! Da-tseh kez Der usd-sur-dee koom. May the Lord grant to you according to your heart.

WHEN TO MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

The sign of the cross is made when entering the Church and on these occasions during the Divine Liturgy: (1) after each instance of bowing (2) when doxology (Park Hor…), that is to say, “Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit” is being said or sung (3) when the Sacred name of our Lord is being solemnly invoked (Hisoos Krisdos) (4) at the beginning of the reading of the Gospel (5) when peace or blessing is being offered by the priest with the words “Peace unto all” (Khaghaghootune Amenetsoon) (6) when the priest or deacon swing the censor toward your direction; (7) when the sacred and the central words of the Divine Liturgy are being spoken (“Take, eat, this is My Body…” and “Drink ye all, this is My Blood.”) (8) when receiving Holy Communion (9) when kissing the Gospel and leaving the Church.

PLEASE NOTE: This year, the Feast of the Nativity falls on a Monday, and the Eve of the Feast falls on a Sunday. Because of this occurrence, Divine Liturgy on Sunday, January 5th will be celebrated in the evening, with only Morning Service on Sunday morning. The canons of the Armenian Church forbid celebrating more than one Liturgy on the same altar in the same church, in the course of the same day. Armenian Church fathers provide this explanation: there is one Christ, who was crucified on one cross – the symbol of which is the holy altar. Also, the celebrant of the Liturgy represents one Christ, head of the Church.

CHRISTMAS OFFERING ”YUGHAKIN” - Remember St. James during this holy season with a Christmas offering. It is customary in the Armenian Church to provide Yughakin (meaning "price of oil") especially around the feasts of Christmas and Easter. In early times, each local church community would donate money specially earmarked towards the purchase of oil, which would keep the lanterns burning and ultimately the doors open of the church. Of course, today we do not have oil-burning lanterns in church; however, we do have other essential operating expenses. As we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let us

remember and continue in the custom of Yughakin, so we can keep our "oil-burning lanterns" always burning and our doors always open at St. James. Yughakin donations may be made in the church office, via the envelopes will be mailed out to parishioners, or online at www.stjameswatertown.org.
